Purchased email list, is it worth the risk?

Hi,

The idea

I do consulting on self development. To built my list, i have created an email campaign thats is made of 15 videos. Once registered, people receive an email every two days with a short video (2 to 5 min) that explains a topic. like: Money, Relationship, Emotions etc.

I am constantly looking for new leads. (as we all are)
I am thinking of buying a cold list of contacts 10k or more and send them email inviting to register for free videos.
On the first email, I intent to explain what should they expect, whats in it for them and etc. if the leave their emails.

My question:
What about spamming? Is it possible to get banned by ISP, loose my account, credibility or else?
I use Getresponse. What if i create another account on GTR or other email system, put the list, send email with a link to the page where they can optin? Then emails would flow into my original GTR account?

Would that work?

Very good question. I have always had mixed thoughts about that to be honest. When a lot of people get a call from an unknown# they won't answer. I think this might work the same way however I haven't tried it so I have no real life results.

    Have fun.

I've attempted this myself and seen 1-2% conversion rate for the emails. Most people just won't click on your email if they don't already have a relationship with you. If they do click on your email then they won't opt in because they don't trust you.

And you're only spamming if you send them emails more than once. So just make sure not to send them each more than one email and you don't have to worry about spamming or any ISP getting mad.

    Please update with results.

EDIT: I just noticed this is your first post on these forums... if you're new to IM, want to throw money into something because you know you need to spend money but don't know where to spend it... don't buy a list and put all your eggs in that basket. Build your list on your own with paid ads and social media and build the trust of your subscribers for the best results.

Build don't Buy - that is my advice.

Get going on social media and post a few of the videos as examples of the series you are offering (a taste test so to speak).

Be sure to set up a capture page to send traffic to in order to get more information - YOUR emails will be worth far more in the long run than PURCHASED emails.

(You can set up a capture page on a Facebook page, blog, website, etc...all can be done for free!)

They've already summed it up for you. Build the list.

Think about this for a second. If buying that list is going to cost you $1,000 and you get a 2% conversion rate (if you're lucky) on a $1,000 sale you've made $1,000 profit. But you can't mail them again, legally.

If you spent that $1,000 building your list you could easily get 1,000 subscribers in most niches. Then you promote the same product and get the same 2% conversion rate, or $1,000 profit.

But you get to mail them again and you're not starting over from square 1.

If the person is selling you the list it's because it's not profitable for them.

Otherwise they wouldn't do it, or it would be a massive $$$ amount that would take a lot more due diligence than just posting this thread.

There are good lead brokers out there. I have dealt with some. The only problem though is usually they sell the same list to MANY people, so they can make their money out of it, but usually the source will only be good for a few months til that lead page or CPA offer dies down.

Lead brokers either don't know how or don't have time to maximize the money out of their list. Everybody has their role for a reason. Usually an executive's assistant know how to do everything the executive does... but the EA couldn't necessarily output the same results or final product the same. That's why they're stuck making $15-$20/hr.

      Everyone has their purpose.

You still summed it up, though. Buying the list puts you back at square 1 after a few months.

No doubt, everyone is looking to build their list, and offering something of value for free is a good strategy, has worked for many, so you are on right track, but buying an email list which is not opt in will get you more problems for almost everything is considered spam these days. I would not use your main email account for it is not worth the risk. You can never be too careful these days and unless you have verified and used the email list before and know it is opt in list, don't do it.

    Success to all,

It is up to you but i tell you this, You might get your business hurt if you purchase leads from unknown source and not knowing how to email it to safeguard your business. Use free email provider like gmail to send it out. Create a landing page with a cachy words to make the list double opt-in. Here is what you need to know. Create value in your offer and you will see increase in subscribers.

    Is it a targeted list?
If not don't bother... Not targeted lists don't work!

Who is your target market? I generated 23 leads in 3 days using cold B2B email marketing and had to purchase no list! I can help you do he same with a minimal investment. PM me if you'd like!

Yes. I had to learn the hard way by purchasing leads.

Only to later find out that I couldn't use "purchased leads"
in my autoresponder. I'm glad I didn't because it is not
worth losing your existing list of people who already know
what your cause is. You can probably use purchased lists
with telemarketing, but I wouldn't risk losing my email
    marketing provider.

I'd suggest not buying a list. Why not look for partners or go to places online or off where your prospective customer hangs out and is readily more eager to buy your service? It sounds like you put a lot of work into your opt-in process. It's best to focus on those already a good fit for your offer. I've found I got much better responses that way.

There are specific requirements for sending emails that don't violate the anti-spam law. You can search on the official site. Basically you need to identify yourself, put your address and give an easy unsub option. But be careful choosing the list provider and the email server. maybe purchasing a double-optin list is a better idea.
