Email Segmentation (?)

What is email segmentation?


Is it having an email campaign that breaks into a different email campaign, that may sell lower priced products, if you see a trend of subscribers only willing to pay a certain price for products?


Or is it dealing with buyers and freebies seekers?


If someone could please expand on email segmentation would be helpful to understand the idea and process... if the process could be explained I would really appreciate it!

  • Email segmentation is for many purposes. You've mentioned few of them.
    One another scenario could be, the email list that will receive followups
    once a week or once a month, or even only on certain events/occasions e.g. Christmas.
    Yet, another could be to segment a list that will only receive your email broadcasts.

  • you can segment based on where in the pipeline or funnel the folks are...(what products have they purchased...

    You can segment based on how engaged they are to you (like do they open..do they click)

    You can segment based on interest (like do they want more information on some sub-niche of my niche)



    another way is segment is based on how long they have been in your list.... - new folks get acclimated to your company...etc...

    etc...that's off the top of my head....there are no doubt other ways...

    • One of the more talked about Segmentation is a Buyers List.

      People who actually buy something from you are then automatically transferred to a separate List where they receive different and many times more personable emails than your regular freebie List

  • Another method of segmentation is tracking clicks. You can use this to see the types of links or images they tend to have a habit of clicking on to get more info, get free reports, etc.

    You can then send them offers that are custom tailored to match their click history, as this will be a good indicator of what their specific interests are.

    Another example (and I think this is what Shermancox is saying too) is you have a list of (say) people interested in Internet Marketing.

    You decide you want to start emailing about (or promoting) list building. Some people on your list will be interested in list building, others won't be. So you send an email explaining what you're doing and tell them if they're interested in hearing more about list building to click your link...

    The guys that click get added to a second list that's set-up to talk about list building.

    You can do the same with copywriting, with social media... and so on.

    Now you have a large general list. And smaller, specific lists you can get into the nitty gritty about without peeing off the folk who aren't interested.

    When marketers talk about making huge profits from tiny lists, often it's only half the truth. It was a tiny list but it was a very specific segment and ultra-targeted sub-list.
