Reviving a Dormant Email List

I'm sure a lot of you guys can relate to this - no matter how narrow you try to make your focus, things come up, life happens, derails your focus and some of important parts of your business get left behind.

Anyway, long story short, the time has come for me to tackle a task that I've been avoiding a while now just because I feel that I don't really know how to do it right and it involves a lot of hard decisions, like shedding thousands of emails from my list.

I have this list that I haven't emailed for at least 8 months and I am planning how to salvage as many leads as possible. Here is my situation and dilemmas:
  1. I've created a package of free (and really good) stuff for them
  2. I set up a new domain just for this list
The two options I am thinking about are:

  1. Ask for them to re-register for the new list in order to get these free products (result: fresh list but not of necessarily of people interested in re-engaging)
  2. Have the gifts available on the page for direct download and then follow how many of them got to the page and shed the emails after one follow up (shed it from the emails that didn't open and click the offer) and start new email series here
  3. Have the gifts available on the page for direct download, shed the list of the non responsive ones and ask the ones who did open and click to opt-in to a fresh list (this option is similar to no.2 with a little edge over it because these people would be the ones that actually took action to get to the new list)
Which one of these do you guys think will do best in terms of having a revived list with decent open and click rates?

Thanks and sorry for the lengthy read

I don't know what market you are in..but I am about a month into reviving a dead list (ne email in 6 months)....it is not IM and they all double opted in at some point...

I didn't give them anything, just started emailing them using Ben Settle's "edutainment" model...you know useful but incomplete information and a soft sell at the end of the email...

About half the list have opened at least oen email over the last month and I am making a lot of sales....

At the end of the next month I will probably take off the folks who still haven't opened an email from me (then it will be two months) and will probably then do a Facebook campaign directly to those people by importing the list into Facebook..to try to revive them...

I guess the first question is how dead is the list?

      Hello Shermancox

Its good to hear you revived the list. Could I ask a couple of questions to help me clarify:

      1. How old is the list?

      2. How big is the list?

      3. How often do you send them emails?

      4. You mentioned you are selling a lot... Can you be a little more explicit. For example, how many sales have you generated so far?

      Regards

      Sam

No list is completely DEAD if you can get in their Inbox with something that piques their interests. I have seen my own Inbox filled with Email Titles such as "Sorry, I've been away..." or the like, and it doesn't stop me for one minute opening it and reading it. Providing free gifts and lots of teaching is a proven winner whether your list is cold, warm or hot. I always think of what would I LIKE to read about and what would I buy and WHY and then craft your email to this list.

Just keep in mind, that YOU may be the only one worrying about the status of the list, while the people on your list have literally no idea how long it's been since you emailed then. Just come out swinging with your personality on the best foot with the best information you have, and they will again know you, like you and trust you.

One big myth is that people will unsubscribe if we do this or that. The fact is people unsubscribe if they've had a bad day...for example. Don't let that stop you from changing their lives with information and products that will improve their life in same way. Hope that helps and keep on, keeping on! Kristie Chiles-Arp

    so, back to my question

Here is how "dead" the list is:
    • I don't look good right now with these people because I already emailed them a short series trying to reengage them a while ago with subjects similar to the one mentioned "Why I was absent.." where I shared that I had health problems, which is the truth
    • it's a 4k list and that first email was opened by 721 people, but the ctr was low (130 clicks) and I had 4 complaints
    • so, you see, it's sensitive because it looks bad that I was in touch, then stopped, then tried to get back in and then stopped again
Anyway, based on what I've read, I think I'm going with no.2 from my options described initially...

    Any thoughts are welcome

    Thanks

I just want to say thanks to all of you who have made posts in relation to email marketing. I recently tried out a GI list but it didn't work out for me, but I am happy to know that the market is still doing well and that a list isn't really dead even if it has been inactive for a while. I look forward to more comments as I move on to my next endeavor.

I agree with Option 2, just my opinion.
