Monetizing a small 1,200 subscriber buyer list

Hey folks, I just realized I have a a buyer list of about 1,200 buyers from selling stuff here and there over the past few years. I've never e-mailed them anything.

People always talk about making a dollar per sub per month. I've also heard about really milking tiny lists and extracting maximum cash from them.

So that's my question.. how do I maximize profit from my small list of buyers?

If anyone has any stories of their early days when they had a small list and what it was like in terms of revenue and growth at that point, that'd be awesome to hear, too.

My advice? Take on more of a "serve your list" mindset and get lifetime customers. Go for the long term reward of having fans and advocates.

If your list is a random collection of random buyers of random stuff it's not much use. The best bet might be to survey them and ask how else you can serve them. Pay special attention to any survey responses that come back with a lot of content. Those are your biggest fans.

Offer value and serve your community - that's how you win long term with email.

Especially if they are "old" buyers and they're not clear about being "subscribers". Even though many so called marketers believe so, it is not the same. You must do things carefully if you do not want to be flagged as a spammer faster than you click send...

I agree, if it's an old list, they probably won't remember you and hit the "spam" button. Gotta keep in touch with your list, as they will quickly forget you. Learned that one the hard way.

Best might be to start up with out selling or promoting anything. Play it real safe for a while. Might not be very responsive.

With a buyers list, $1 per sub is pretty damn bad...

And it's more of a low-benchmark thrown around by people who want to get into list building.

Anyway, if you haven't sent anything out to them, ever...

I would recommend sending them an email, thanking them for a purchase...

Telling them a little about yourself, and so on and so forth.

Your biggest first goal would be to 'awaken the dead' (so to speak)...

As there's a good chance many people on your list have forgotten about you.

    Marc,

If you have been selling random things (meaning your list is not targeted), and the names were gained "over the past few years," I'm afraid you don't have much of an asset at all. In fact, the list may be a liability if you get complaints from it and people contact your host saying you are a spammer. A neglected list, a random interest list, and a list dating back years are all negatives.

You might want to clean the list, then send one email explaining who you are, why the prospect is on your list and then provide an incentive to subscribe to your new targeted list (whatever you plan to offer). Let the prospects know that they won't hear from you again if they don't accept your offer. Take all the risk away from your former "subscribers."

Don't expect the response to be more than "dismal." At least this way, you shouldn't get too many complaints.

    Completely agree with previous comments....

Your first wake-up email should remind them how they got into your list. If your sources were different, then segment your list and send separate wake-up emails.

Go slow, keep 80% useful content, 20% promotional emails. A quick survey is also a good way to know what topics you should write your email content on.

You will need to re-activate them. More than likely they've forgotten about you. Plus, you said you sold them different stuff - which means they all can't fit into one category. So you may have to segment your buyers list, send them a humorous re-activation letter/email for each niche, and see how many sign back up to do business with you again.

I believe a lot of massive profits from tiny-lists is a combination of really good relationships and segmentation.

I know some folk have lists of thousands, then create a segment of a couple of hundred really interested, pre-qualified people and then of course make oodles of money per subscriber. Loads of money from a tiny list but not quite as they've explained.

Having a small list can be very profitable but it about building a relationship with your list and providing them value time and time again so they know who you are trust you and then they will open your mails.

As mentioned above an old list that you have had no communication with is not of much use however as Jim mentioned you could do a poll to re engage them and salvage some and start over this time stayinging touch and serving them by providing value when you mail them.

It's a shame that you haven't contacted them in so long.

What you'll want to do, is email them, apologize for being out of touch, thank them for their past purchase, and explain why you are suddenly contacting them.

    Now, allow me to inquire...

Are they in the Internet marketing niche?

    I would submit two options.

Option # 1 - Write frequent product reviews, and email them to your subscribers. Offer bonuses that expire, and review as many products as you can that your end users would likely appreciate. (No fake reviews, you must write real reviews).

Option # 2 - Create your own products, preferably at a high volume, and launch them privately to your list.

    Both definitely work.

If you want to be protective of your list, go with option # 2. If you care less about the sanctity of your list, option # 1 shall suffice.

You could even try a mixture of the two, but I would recommend focusing on one in order to reach a level of expertise.

    Wishing you the best...

    PS:

In the future, remember that the last question you ever want your subscribers to ask is... "Who is this person?"

    My suggestion:
That list could make you a good income per month.

    1. Create a low cost product like $5-$20
    2. Create a remarkable jv/affiliate resources page
    3. Groom your list through sending them emails about how affiliate marketing could profit them (DON'T SELL)
    4. Assure them that you have created an awesome product that will give them 100% Commissions.
    5. This will leverage your efforts exponentially. Your list will start working for you.

100% Commissions? So where do I make the money??.... Integrate a fairly priced BACKEND offer that is tightly related to your initial product ($50-$1000+) eg done for you service, coaching, paid membership, etc. That's where the big money's come from.

    Good luck,
    Joe
