850 person email list - advice?

Hey guys!

I have experience with several different forms of online marketing, this is my first time making money with an email list.

I currently have a great way of obtaining emails and I'm at around 850 emails. I have currently sent them 2 great information-packed ebooks for free.

What are your suggestions to monetize this list efficiently? My plan was to possibly send them around 1-2 more non-product emails, then attempting to pitch an affiliate offer for a product and seeing how it goes.

What do you guys think? I'd love to learn from others with more experience in this niche.

    You're conditioning your subscribers not to buy... if they optin for a freebie, that's fine but leave it at that.

    The whole purpose of a mailing list is to make money. If people want to unsubscribe, that's fine. They are eliminating themselves from the equation.

    Most people who teach the whole "relationship" thing when you get on their list, they send nothing but promotions. That's because teaching the "relationship" sounds good.

    There are other ways to build a "relationship" outside of giving stuff away.

    Value doesn't have to be free. For example, value can come from only promoting good stuff and incentivizing it with bonuses.

      I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure if I completely agree - I know a lot of successful people with email lists that send around 20% promotional offers and 80% free information of value. The same goes with all of the research I've done - I've not heard of anyone simply ending promotional offers and nothing but.

        While it's not the norm, it's exactly what I do. I send nothing but promotional emails. However, I target people seeking information on a certain vertical and then I send them a lead generation offer that will provide the information they are looking for.

        You don't have to send 100% content in a message, you could send content and an offer that is related to the content. So if the content is about how to get traffic to your blog, you could provide all kinds of great content and also have an affiliate offer that is about getting traffic to your blog.

          I tend to agree with this. In my personal experience as well as for several of my clients, the bulk of emails on a list are pure value-giving content - in most cases, anyway.

          If the offer is truly relevant to the content (and not just shoehorned in), there's no reason not to include it.

          All of this really depends on the vertical as well. Good luck with your list!

    There are almost as many opinions on this as there are marketers...

    One philosophy is to alternate 'content' emails with promotional emails, but I favor hybrid emails which provide value, leading to a high quality related offer, as suggested by DIABLO.

    That way, those who don't buy still feel they are getting value from you, and you're building trust so they are more likely to buy when the 'time is right' or you present an offer that can help them.

    Giving away an occasional free ebook is fine if you leverage it by integrating it into your sales process and it reinforces your overall marketing message, but overdoing it will train 'freebie seekers' not to buy from you.
