Do I Still Need My Own List?

I have a LinkedIn group with over 62,000 members...but I don't have a list. As owner/moderator of my group, I have the ability to send one announcement per week to the entire group (unless they've chosen to opt out). This is free, by the way. I am well-aware that I don't "own" these members' emails so I don't have the ability to send them more than one email a week (which, by LinkedIn standards, is excessive). I also realize that LinkedIn could potentially change the rules of the game at any time (e.g., they could remove the functionality for group owners to send announcements), but I seriously doubt they would since it's a value-add for their members. So the question is....

What benefit would be worth my paying for an email marketing service like Aweber or MailChimp? (For my ability to email 60,000+ members, the cost for those services are outside my budget). Is there something I missing? (I'm admittedly new to email marketing so my apologies if there's a certain level of naivety to my question). Thanks in advance for any responses.

    Not to familiar with Linkedin. But it is definitely worth it to look into Aweber and have your Own list.

    I can speak only for myself but you need to email more than once a week in ANY niche.

    You would probably not get all those 60000 members on your list. But, if you created a great free offer for those people and sent them to a squeeze page you could get a good number of them on your list. As well you could be sending links to your blog/website content and then try to capture them there.

      Thanks for the reply, agmccall. A potential problem with this is that my LinkedIn members are industry professionals in a group for a very specific corporate-related niche. They're pretty smart, and I'm not selling them squeegees or iPad covers. If they even sniff that I'm an Internet marketer rather than an industry pundit, they will likely jump ship (i.e., opt-out) faster than lightning.

    2. You can follow up with them AUTO-MAGICALLY
    3. You can build a deeper relationship with them
    4. You can make more money
    5. You can segregate your list and email based on there interests

    Hey Czilbersher.. great question.. good that you have a sizable amount of people linked in on Linkedin ;-) Yes collab with an email marketing co will surely help - to put things in place, send regular great emails which would be customised, precise, useful and attractive and most importantly add more your lists. I agree 60k is good number but more is always better as long as you dont lose focus from sending quality and useful stuff. And as you can send a broadcast to all 60k people on Linkedin, I suggest you send a nice broadcast with lot of userful and free information and 'a link' to direct them to your landing page page where they could sign up / avail some e-stuff and enter their email addresses accordingly. Be sure the genuinely interested people will surely navigate your web page and get connected. I have been using Ariticmail as an email marketing vendor for my fashion store and it doing a lot of good for my bizz

    Yes, you need it. You could send them a freebie to capture their email (you could try solutions like FBListMonster (.com) to get their best email addresses) but you should try to get them into some autoresponder (Aweber / GetResponse).
