Email v/s Website Push Notifications - have you compared them?

Hello all,

I wanted to start a discussion on this forum and get everyone’s opinions on: a) whether you’ve tried push notifications for their visitors on their website; b) how does it compare with your email marketing experience.

Disclosure: we’ve started a service called [a href="https://pushcrew.com/"]PushCrew[/a]. It’s very new and currently we’re talking to email marketers, educating them and taking their feedback.

Our experience: we’ve seen our early users getting an opt-in rate of up to 20-40% and click rate of up to 15-20%. However, we feel that the use case of push notifications is very different as push notification if overdone become spammy. But in certain use cases sending a notification is better than sending an email - like expiring discounts (that only last for a couple of hours or days) or personalised alerts/updates (where sending one email per alert/update could be an overkill).

I’m curious - how is your experience for these two technologies (in terms of use case)? Since push technology is new, how do you think end users will react to them?

    Hey guys, looking for some interesting responses to this.

    Just in case you're wondering about website push notifications, it is a technology which enables a website to send a push notification. It works very similar to app-style push notifications, the difference being that 1)there is no need of an app download and 2)it works on all three major devices (desktop, mobile and tablet).

    Ever since Chrome enabled push notifications for its desktop and mobile browser, they have become the new talking point in the online world.     I've used push for a while, in addition to email marketing.
    The opt-in and click rates were indeed better than email - in the beginning.
    The conversion rates fell way behind though
    The engagement also declined a lot faster. New opt-ins did engage a lot, but soon went either "blind" to notifications or opted out in a short time.

    My personal angle to push: I never subscribe to them now. I find them a lot more annoying than email.

      I am in total agreement here.
      I absolutely hate push notifications.
      I would much rather get 1000 spam emails then get a single push notification.
      I never subscribe or allow them ever on any site that I visit.

    Push notifications work well if done properly. Even more - behavioral pushes can increase conversions in times. But they're very sensual - not overspam them. Just remember - from love to hate it takes a step.

    Far better Email Marketing

    I really think that push notification, fb groups, etc, are tools which have to be ultimately focused on lead generation, and lead nurturing.

    I mean REDUNDANT.

    In this noisy world, you have to be redundant, send the same info in email, re engaging with facebook, resending with push notification, and so on

    But your main business core has to be email marketing.

    And i use Pushcrew.

    Choices may differ based on the purpose criteria. in my case push notification is more preferable. On some cases, push notification can be bothering. Web Push Notification must be done in an effective manner.

    Push technology is definitely not new.

    I was using push technology back in 2005??

    As others have said, it kinda worked for a while but I wouldn't get
    too excited.

    If you start to promote this as 'the next new thing' I suspect you'll
    have a lot of 'shiny object chasers' buy in and just be disappointed.

    Anything and everything is worth as try but [and this is specifically for
    newbies who are still chasing the magic bullet] there is no 'one thing'
    that is so new and so good that it will answer all your prayers.

    I'd be interested in the thoughts of others though?
