You will get more opt-ins with email only vs. Name and email

And with email only you can make more effort to send personalized emails.

Plus , some people will write fake names and make your emails look weird and fake.

      Hello Egyfitness

How can you "make more effort to send personalized emails" with email only???

An if someone gives fake names, too bad for them. If Bubba told us he was MaryAnne now he might have to put up with getting mailings bout the latest lines in Lacey French Knickers, or the best lipstick colours for his complexion! lol.

      Cheers

in my opinion, you should go with list that contains email only. in most cases people used to write fake names and details. if you wanna hit a target according to nature, city or any other criteria then you should go for list with user detail like address and all.

    Hello iAmLuan

If you want to market to them, what are you going to call them if you don't know their names? Hey You..........? Thats really personal!

We want to build a very personal relationship with our subscribers so of course we want to be able to call them by their names.

We go much further than that, we want them to get to know us in a personal way too, we likely go much further than most other marketers in doing this, but we think along these lines - if they feel like they know us, that we are real people to them not some unknown company trying to sell them something, they are much more likely to open an read what we send to them. You don't ignore your friends, you open an read their emails.

We go way further than most marketers in building our personal relationships, an example is what we do at Christmas. We send everyone an eChristmas Card, we design it ourselves. We actually get thousands of Christmas Cards back from our subscribers. We don't know of any other marketers who get the same from their lists. We also make a Christmas Video, this year it was 12 minutes long, but nearly half our subscribers sat an watched it. It wasn't boring, it was absolute fun, starring us an our staff, plus our dogs an even our cats all dressed up for Christmas. We got thousands of comments back bout our Christmas Video too.

We could never build personal relationships like we do if to start off we don't even know their names.

    Cheers

I agree with LindyUK. Having the first name does allow you to be more personal with your emails. But I do not think this is not an issue to lose sleep over. They say that you will be able to get more opt-ins with the email only. Are those few extra Opt-ins worth not having the first name? I have not idea. In either case sending good emails that get opened and read - that is the important thing.

      Hello DWaters

We think of it like this, you might get more optins with email only, but do you really want them if they are not even willing to give you their first name.

If you personally meet someone an they don't want to introduce themselves by telling you their name, you are very unlikely to form any kind of relationship with them. We carry that same thought through to our lists.

      Cheers

That is an old debate , quantity vs. quality. So instead of basing my own opinion about this debate. I just follow the leads of the big marketers. Neil Patel , Ben settle , Ian Brodie..etc,
        All use email only.

And about your question , what would I call them in emails. I just say , Hi there , how are you doing. How did you like this. I hope you find this useful. Tomorrow wait for my email. I want you to learn..etc,
They wont notice not calling their names IMO

Another issue , 70% of my visitors are from mobile device. That will make writing two fields even harder.

Wish (you) happy new year <-- see what I did there ?

Use email only. That increases subscribers .There is not much personalization you can do if you know their name. Duh. It is email , not their mobile number.

Juuust to throw a wrench in the system a bit, I went another route recently after 20 years of messing around between email only and email & name opt-ins.

I started a members site that offers 1) content and resources that you don't have to opt-in to get access to and 2) "the even better stuff" available completing a $0 "order" which allows me to give the subscriber a unique username and password.

Since they're entering a $0 order, they're required to complete a full registration form with name, address, phone, required to create a member login.

I've only been experimenting with this for about two months, but my initial report is that my conversion rates for opt-ins (registrations) have definitely gone down as expected but not as much percentage-wise as I thought they would.

The plus is that it's very rare I get a fake registration.

What has been interesting too is that my open rates for outgoing email to members have increased too because subscribers know my email is telling them there's some new tool or document we've just added to the LIFETIME free members area.

So, just reporting that there's another way to do it. Once you get into those upper numbers of email lists, and face the prospect of needing your own dedicated email server to get larger email quantities sent, well, ya start thinking of ways to prune your list and increase the quality of subscriber instead of just getting higher opt-in rates just to increase quantity.

          Hello Egyfitness

I don't know any of the marketers you mentioned but they likely have limited experience an small operations compared to us. We have over 12 years experience, near 20 years if you count my Dad's prior to our Business's. We have 65 full time employees, an have been involved in nearly every field of IM, so we know what we are doing.

When I gave my replies above I was really talking bout our Affiliate Marketing lists. Affiliate Marketing is only a small part of our Business now but still returns us around US$3 Million in commissions each year.

Those commissions are from 7 lists, the smallest an newest only 6K, the oldest an largest over 100K. All 7 lists total round 220,000 Subscribers. List quality is more important than list size, the more information people are willing to give you the more serious they are in wanting to deal with you.

With other parts of our Business we would want a lot more information before we would deal with them. Full name, email, phone, mobile, address etc. With SMB's we then follow up prospects with a much more detailed questionaire, including Business Turnover, Marketing Budget, Marketing Spend Breakdown etc

The largest part of our Business now is providing services to Offline Business's, so we are also list building for many of them, then following through with marketing to their clients/customers. Mobile is a large part of that too, but we still want names at initial contact point. Most people using mobiles are also texting, so have no trouble in filling out extra fields.

          Cheers
          Lindy
