Bought an email list. What next? Help.

I am a newbie - 7 months in IM and just starting out in email/affiliate marketing.

I bought an email list of buyers in the money making niche.

Yes I know not the best idea and no I don't want to be a spammer.
However the damage is done and not entirely proud about it.

Why did I do it? Someone recommended that this was the fastest way to start making money. And we all need to make some money to get things going on our IM journey right? Especially for newbies - seeing some profit is essential as it gives that bit of motivation to get us going.

Now my intention is to build a relationship with the list and also be able to sell.

So my question is - from here what is the best strategy to move forward?

Do I send this list an optin form to optin to my offers? Or do I introduce myself and start sending value adding rapport building emails mixed with promos?

Thanks in advance for your responses guys.

    Hello IMuser365,
Thanks for your nice post & thanks for your intention. Go ahead. You are in right position. For the best strategy to move forward , You may use Auto responder software from Get respons. I use & like that. Its very easier & so friendly for email marketing. I think you will satisfied with that ....Wish all success.
    Thanks again..

I think buying a list of emails is a self inflicted wound. You would be better off to do it right and create a landing page with a free offer on sign up. Use an auto responder and cultivate your relationship with those on the list you create. Drive traffic to your offer using solo ads or ppv. Good luck!

    hi,

in my opinion, buying a list from a third party is not a good move. however you already done it, so you can start building relationship and send promotional emails as well.

First, clean the list. Don't waste your time with anything less than BriteVerify.

Second, get a third party email relay that you aren't planning to use in the long run. Perhaps SMTP.com or something. Send an email with no links/no images (aside from tracking) and make it VERY personal. Throttle your sending VERY slow. Once you've made your way through the list, pull out the openers and delete the rest of the list. Move the openers (quality data) over to your main ESP/SMTP provider.

You'll find that only a FRACTION of your list is worth anything (1-5% max). Be thankful if you can walk away with a good list from what you've purchased. Back in 2000, it was worthwhile to buy a list, in 2016, buying a list is the equivalent of buying used toilet paper. Sure you can make it work, but do you really want to?

Hey now that you bought the list, just be careful of bounced emails. Too many bounces could result in your account getting banned from the email marketing service provider you use. So please ensure all emails are working and there are no errors in the @ and . in them.

Also please ensure to insert an unsubscribe link whenever you send out your first email.

    What next? Sell it...
Leaving the dark humor, the first thing to do it is to clean the list.
After you clean it you should send an email to introduce yourself. Give the people the chance to get to know you. Remember: The email should contain an opt out method.
Delete the emails opted out and continue sending emails to the other ones.
Final step: Don`t buy another list in the future.

Can you clean the list? Sure.

Can you get people to open up your emails? Perhaps.

Can you get them to buy from you, knowing they have no idea who you are and why you're emailing them? Never.

It's a lesson learned the hard way. My advice, which reflects what others have said, is to ditch the list and start afresh with a blank one where there reason people sing up to is you.

  • HI IMuser365

First ideas are sometimes good, some are bad, it all depends where u take them, and learn from, well put in your post,, we all have to start somewhere, That being said, the road to success may not always be easy,, for your email list, I would say contact them let them know who you are, and your intentions to bring them quality internet marketing does and don't, then see your response, as well having a proper autoresponder is a key as well, as one person replying already pointed out,, I have had both Aweber and Getresponse,, over the years, lost a 12,000 list of subscriber once by Aweber ( so I would tend to lean towards Getresponse personally,,

I have over 28 websites in different niches, and would be happy to give you any advice I can,
just buying a new software from a programmer friend of mine, who can send 100,000 visitors a month to sites, looking forward to getting that ramped up soon,

hit me up here, or PM me for any help I may be able to impart..

I think the best is to not use the list at all. But to generate a interest in you yourself Using the warrior forum or even facebook. I think getting people interested in you is better for getting traffic to any website you want. so look at the questions in the forum related to what you are selling answer the questions and it will direct the traffic via your signature.

You should definitely introduce yourself, who you are and how you got their email (don't say you bought it) and what they can expect to achieve by reading your emails. Follow that up with a bunch of AWESOME content that they can actual use and apply to make money. It should be about roughly an email every other day for about 10 or 12 days or so. After that, don't sell them something, recommend that they check it out because (enter reason here).

You probably shouldn't expect a huge return from any list you buy though as it's probably not a very quality list. Just keep in mind that if it were the size of the list, spammers would all be multimillionaires as they usually have the biggest lists.

I hope that helps and good luck!

    Hello,
Welcome to email marketing!Directly sending just an opt - in form to your email list does not make sense as they do not know you nor the value that you can provide...Try to make them familiar with your product and send them some free goodies along with the opt -in form for the first time as in this way you can start a rewarding relationship with potential clients.
    Good Luck !

Not necessarily. If he cleans it and add an option to op-out of future emails he might be safe.
Just don`t buy another one in the future

I don.'t have an opinion on bought lists but I Do have
    some interesting statistics.

I did some work for a business who bought a list.

The response rate was less than < 0.0002%....that is with a well written
    email to a targetted audience.

Forget the list and don't do something just because somebody said they thought it was a good idea.

A better strategy would have been to ask on here about response rates to bought lists.

You'd have saved time and money. Money can be replaced....time cannot.

Even if i don't support the idea of buying a list i can suggest you to first introduce your self who you are etc etc. Then follow up with a series of email with informational content. Set in your autoresponder 1 email every 2-3 days for maybe 15-20 days. You will be able to see the open rate through your stats. IMPORTANT Do not promote anything to that list yet! If you have a good open rate for that amount of days and you have made a good engage then start slowly to change the angle of your emails. Sent some free ebook or something that required to opt-in for download it. As many emails you get from that optin form those are your email that can be monitored for promotional purpose. Hope that helps. Cheers, Yioti

Do you have any idea how the list was built? A list built in the MMO niche will maybe not be too hot on relationship building. There are some lists where people won't even know who they are subscribed to and won't notice the list has been handed over ...
Other lists may react totally different.
Do you know if this list was sold multiple times over? Maybe you're not the only one who got this list...
You could try importing the list to an autoresponder service and have them opt in again to Your list on import.
That way your list will be cleaned from bounces and future spam complainers.
Or it will be gone ...

You should look for course on 'warming up a dead list' Look up Lee Nazal for that or maybe send latest news/gossip. You will have problems with importing lists into most auto-responders as they dont want spammers. Check out Dangerious emailer which will bulk send & clean the list. Good luck.

All depends on what niche are they interested in.
I would start with your first idea, send them emails with some great cheap offer leads to your landing page and to re-opt in them to sell them your offer. Do this more time with different landing pages and different offers

As others have said, buying an email list isn't a good strategy.

Drive traffic to a landing page... Put up an opt-in box... Offer a compelling freebie in exchange for their email address.

That's a much more effective strategy.

    Now go and do it.

That's illegal assuming you're in the US.

You can't just go blasting unsolicited emails.

A smarter move would have been to let a list owner (legit owner) send out emails with your site link and then let the traffic voluntarily optin to your own list.

Can-Spam makes it legal to spam, as long as you follow the rules.

It really should of been called I-Can-Spam act.

I have been buying and monetizing purchased lists for over 16 years. However, I buy lists where the users have given permission to receive third party offers and it's 100% legal. However, I know mailers that will mail anything, because as long as you follow can-spam regardless of how you got the data, the chance of anything ever happening is slim to none.

Nothing wrong with buying lists as long as you do your due diligence first. Ensuring that it's fully compliant with full optin info. Are you getting the right lists for for your demographic, does it have all the info that you need for your particular campaign. Being in data and lists for 14 years, it's one of the most cost effective ways to build up your own internal lists with your campaigns. As one list may be gold for you, it could be crap for someone else.

I don't think it is a bad thing you did there, just be smart now! You need to build relationships, use whatever you need, manualy or usee apps that do auto send, just establish relationships, grow them, because the stronger they are, the better it will sell! good luck!
