How do I (should I ??) email a purchased list, safely and effectively?

Hey Warriors,

Firstly, should I email them, if I find the right email service provider?btw, which are those providers, that allow purchased lists? Do you know any?

Secondly, can you indicate the best practices when doing so?

Thank you and have a great weekend!

If planning for email marketing, do check out these two best sites:

    Email Marketing | AWeber
Email Marketing Software & Autoresponder from GetResponse

I am sure you will benefit using either one of them.

Thank you Chintan, but those are the exact two services that DO NOT allow purchased lists.

      Thanks!

Hey OP, that's because purchasing email lists can be a tricky area in terms of legality.

It's very possible that you (and the person who sold you that list) can be slapped with a lawsuit.

Email spam policies can be a bit of a gray area when it comes to buying lists (and always changing) so I would advise you to stay away from practices deliberately banned by reputable email service providers.

Also, I already told you why you shouldn't buy a list:

        http://www.warriorforum.com/email-ma...l#post10558064

However, it seems that you are adamant on choosing a path that will waste you a lot of money, and potentially get you sued.

        Good luck with that.

        Regards,
        Daniel

Yup, I gave you some advice as well: http://www.warriorforum.com/email-ma...l#post10562402

If you insist on actually buying lists, you're going to have tough sledding.

Your best bet might be a self-hosted solution along with something like Amazon's Simple Email Service.

Put on your asbestos underwear and have a go, since you're probably going to keep asking the same question until you get the answer you want.

It's really not like that. believe it or not, people stand divided on this. Some say that, sure, buying a list is problematic, while others say that it doesn't have the stigma it used to have associated with it anymore, and that in the right conditions, this could be an acceptable shortcut to reaching more people faster.

I do however appreciate your perspective, and I understand your reasoning.

          Hey Daniel,

I do understand where you're coming from with the reply, I'm just trying to cover my bases here, make sure I get as much info as possible.

As I said, although yes, some people say that buying a list is a no-no, other feel that lately things may have changed, if you do things the right way.

I've been monetizing purchased data(email) for 16+ years, So I find it amusing when users say not to buy a list. However, it really depends on what you are trying to do and the quality of the data.

If your buying data from a new source and your concerned about the quality, just buy a random sample of the data and test it. Any reputable source is not going to have a problem with you buying a sample, if they do, then don't buy from them, After you test it, you will then have an idea what it's actually worth to you and you can try and negotiate the price if needed.

Keep in mind that I monetize data for a living and there is huge difference between it and someone that buys a list to try and sell a product or service. I heavily promote many free offers that have mass appeal and pay well. So it is much easier for me to turn a profit than someone that has a single product or service and turning a profit relies on them getting users to pull out their credit card and make a purchase.

So much comes down to what you are going to do with the list and your money very well be better spent on developing your own opt-in list.

Feel free to PM if you want some advice.

If you want to use a purchased list. You should use a Self Hosted Autoresponder System. You can try Amazonses and sendy. That combination is so good and the delivery is superb. If you want a delivery that matches Aweber. Try Inbox Director AR System. Make sure you clean your list before uploading.

Uploading a purchased list to an ESP is like asking a cop if it is OK if you drive 60 in the 55.

Will the cop pull you over for driving 60 in 55? Most likely not unless he is having a bad day.

Will an ESP know that your list is purchased and ban you? Most likely not unless you have too many bounces or complaints.

That said, you have to decide if it is worth giving it a try. I say yes. Go ahead and remove all role accounts such as info, contact, support, etc.

Second, have your list cleaned with EmailAnswers.com. They will remove bounces, complaints, and many other bad emails.

Unless you are sending pure junkmail, my guess is that you will be OK.

(Many will tell you to never do this. Let them do their thing and you do your thing. Your biggest regret will be not giving it a try. Also, since your account will be new, send a general information as the first one or two emails as the ESP's review emails for new accounts. Keep the bounce and unsubscribe low.)

To the OP or anyone who reads this post - I work in the email industry so here's my advice.

I'm not going to say not to buy a list because I know that there are people who have had success monetizing purchased lists. In fact, before working in the email industry I had some success myself. But generally speaking, buying a list is not as quick of a shortcut as you would think.

So with that said - you need to be really careful. In fact, I'd even advise against it -- especially if you are new to email marketing.

    Here's why:

A few years ago we had one company that had a fantastic reputation for sending legitimate email. They had an existing list of a few hundred thousand addresses, which they spent a lot of time building.

Naturally, they wanted to grow their business so they went to a broker and purchased a list. They thought that the broker was reputable (and I don't blame them since some brokers usually are for the most part).

However, it only took a few short hours to completely destroy their hard-earned reputation. With the sending of a single newsletter message to the newly purchased addresses, their dedicated IP address became listed on 7 different blacklists.

You can read the full story here http://www.socketlabs.com/blog/sending-to-a-purchased-list/

My advice - Rather than spending time and money emailing a purchased list, try putting that money into a campaign to generate a list of qualified opt-in leads that you can email.
