Creating Mobile Friendly Emails

Studies have shown that within 15 minutes of waking we've picked up our handheld device and have checked our messages, emails and social media. Our mobile phones connect us to the outside world and with checking our communication is as much a part of our morning routine as taking a shower. With this in mind, there is a very high possibility that the email that you poured your heart and soul into, will be read on the go via your recipient's mobile phone.

Smaller screens mean a smaller display in which to get your message across and this becomes a critical consideration when designing your content. With the majority of the population no longer waiting until they're at a computer screen before accessing their emails, it is vital that you've prepared for this to make sure that you're not missing out on your golden opportunity to have your email displayed effectively to promote your brand.

Here are a few tips to make your emails mobile friendly:

Reduce your subject line
Mobile phones typically only display 25-30 characters of a subject line. That's not a lot of room to entice the reader to enter into the body of the email but it can be done. Creating a sense of urgency or intrigue will make your recipient want to read on. If they don't have the time right there and then, phrases such as 'how we can help you', 'read this now' and 'don't wait for success' will entice them to go back and have a thorough read once they're able to do so.

Utilize pre-header text
Pre-header text is the small box of text that sits just underneath the subject line in a standard mobile phone view. It varies between devices but it is roughly 60 characters for you to work your magic. If the title wasn't enough to get your reader going, then this box is the next step.

Keep it concise
You don't have much time to get the reader's attention, and your email is unlikely to be their main focus point if they're checking it on a mobile phone. Swap long paragraphs for bullet pointed lists, get your message across in as few as words as possible and make calls to action central and urgent.

Ensure links are accessible
If there is too much clutter in your email, it can be hard for the user to find their link. Ensure that links and images are surrounded by plenty of space so that your (average) three seconds of viewing time leaves the recipient in no doubt of what they need to do and how they can do it.

Shrink all images
Images opened on a mobile device take a long time to load and detract from the all-important text. Keep images small and only add the essentials to speed up loading time. Waiting for images to load is an attention killer and your reader will have moved onto something else if it's taking too long.

Making your emails mobile friendly will ensure that you're engaging with your target market through every avenue. Just a few simple changes will ensure that on-the-go recipients will still take note of your critical content.
