Stop what you're doing and read on!

That's what your email's subject line needs to scream to your audience. It is your first and last opportunity to grab your audience's attention and encourage them to click into your email text and read on. In just five to ten words your subject line should engage and hold your audience's attention and make your target market open your email.

Email is now the most popular method of marketing communication, so inboxes are filled with 'spam' and 'junk' email. Whether the intended user opted-in for this service is irrelevant, your email will be delivered to the same space as hundreds of others.

So with just a few short words to make your email stand out from the crowd and entice your reader, here are a few tips to create a subject line which will encourage the user to stand up and take notice.

Make it urgent
Read this now! Respond today! Immediate attention required! These are all phrases which will generate a bit of an urgency within the reader; we are a curious species, so anything that makes your customer feel as though they'll be missing out by not reading on is a good place to start. Of course, your content has to deliver on this promise; don't offer a once in a lifetime opportunity if it isn't backed up in your text!

Don't use all capitals
How you say it is just as important as what you say. Capital letters are the Internet's way of shouting; addressing your existing and potential clients this way as a first impression is insulting and off-putting. Writing the same thing but in lower case will get you a much higher read rate.

Brainstorm
Spend some time writing down a few options and re-visit them after a couple of hours. What would make you read your email? Pick that one!

Create curiosity
Be mysterious! Give your reader a reason to open up your email and investigate further. Phrases such as 'you can't live without this', 'unique new features' and 'exceptional benefits' will all make the reader feel as though there is something in it for them if they read your content. Don't prove them wrong!

Mix it up
If you've had a higher read rate with one subject line over another, don't re-use it. Unique and original content is the key to holding a subscriber's interest, and this is no different for your subject lines.

Connect
While It's hard to connect with a reader until they've entered into the main bulk of your content, phrases such as 'we've taken your advice' and 'we care about you' will tell your subscribers that you have their best interests at heart which will encourage them to read on.

With just a few short words to grab the attention of your subscriber and make your email unique and appealing, it's vital that your subject line is interesting, concise and most of all engaging.
