There's nothing worse than spending stacks of time on an awesome email for your mailing list only to see the open rate come back as something abysmal! Bounce rate I can cope with, but to not even read all my hard work is downright frustrating!

I've written up with a few tips and tricks which might encourage an open for marketers starting out writing email campaigns.

Be Personal - Firstly, I've started to send my emails from a person instead of my company. I've always put the company name in which I don't think is as personal. If they don't remember signing up to the mailing list, it could go into their spam folder whereas using my name will hopefully encourage the receiver to open it.

Nail The Subject Line - The subject line is more important than I ever realised!! I guess it makes sense that it needs to give the reader a reason to keep reading, but with only a few characters that are really difficult. I've been working on adding CTA words like 'open now' and 'last chance' etc. to create some urgency. For my next mailing, I'm also going to try putting the first name in the subject line to draw the reader's attention there. Obviously, I'll need to try some A/B testing to see if this is successful and worth repeating, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Get Amazing Preview Text
- I've also spent a bit of time on the preview text. This is the bit that immediately shows after the subject in most inboxes. It's about 50 characters or so where they reader will get a snapshot of what they'll find in my email. Making it short, sharp, interesting and creating urgency has been really difficult, but I think it's something I've finally mastered the art of.

Optimize Your Emails - The last thing that's on my list to try is to make sure that my emails are optimized for mobile readers. It's a crazy statistic that something like 48% of people check their email on a cell phone these days which is a lot of the market! Programs like Mail Chimp allow you to use their preview option on mobile ahead of your send and this functionality is available on a range of platforms.

If anyone's got any other hacks to try, please comment below, I would love to know how to increase my open rate, at least that will make all the time I spend on the emails worth it!!

    I agree.
If you don't bring value and they don't recognize you, your list is dead. That's it.

Completely agree, the subject line is very important.

When I first started out doing email (what a lost soul I was coming to think of it...) I didn't believe the subject line was all that vital.

I soon realised how wrong I was.

    Anyway, here's a tip:

Using a controversial subject line once every week or two is a great way of boosting your open rates. It will just "shock" your list a bit, meaning your email will stand out from every other one in their inbox.

Sure, you'll probably get a few people unsubscribe. But you should also get many more opens.

But this bit's important: If you do see your open rates (and your sales) increase the day you send an email with a controversial subject line, don't be tempted into writing another similar subject line for a few days. Quite simply, the "shock" effect will wear off if you overdo it.

Thanks for your reply - I totally agree.

Earlier this week I received an email as part of a campaign that is written by a well-known writer and the subject heading was something that was a little unconventional and probably a little shocking (I am trying to find the email to share it but it was something along the lines of "We're going to be brutally honest, your emails suck" - interestingly it grabbed my attention and I read the email all the way through. The other emails that I have been sent in this campaign have never been opened, however this subject jumped out at me.... and I had to open.

If you were to use the shock and awe method continuously it would certainly wear off, now and again I think it works well.

I was the same in the early days, the subject was pretty much the last thing I did and I didn't put too much importance on it. Now, thankfully, I understand that if the subject isn't awesome my subscribers won't ever get to the brilliantly crafted content within the email

Informative list of tips! I especially agree with the last trick. I also think that it is very important to make sure that the emails are optimized for mobile readers, because more and more people started using mobile devices to check their emails, to buy something, but not just for communication with friends.
