How To Conduct An Email Survey

Ever wondered what exactly to sell to your email list?

If so, then you'll want to read this post, because I will tell you how you can learn exactly what the people on your email list want to buy.

You see, too many entrepreneurs and business owners guess at what their lists want to buy. Which is a huge (and potentially very expensive) mistake.

Yet what if there was a way to almost guarantee you're selling a product or service which your market will be eager to buy?

Just so happens, there is. And it involves sending out surveys to your email list.

See, surveys can be very powerful market research "tools". And you should definitely be using them as part of your email marketing campaign. But you have to make sure you conduct an email survey in the correct way.

So what do I mean by the "correct" way?

Well, first of all, it's important you know the limitations of surveys. Perhaps the biggest limitation is that you can't be sure how accurate the information you're receiving is. After all, are the people on your email list telling the complete truth? Or are they telling you information that's perhaps slightly exaggerated? I mean, this does happen quite regularly.

But the thing is, this false information could be quite devastating for you and your email marketing efforts. If you designed a new product on the basis of false information, you'd end up with egg on your face when your sales tanked.

But fear not, my friend.

For if you conduct your email survey like I'm about to show you, then your email marketing should be very profitable.

So, first up, you should tell your email list that you want to offer them something that is truly tailored to them. Then you need to say that in order to do this, you need them to answer a few questions.

And this is the important part: You then need to ask them to answer your questions as honestly as possible because it will help you understand exactly what it is they want in a product/service. Plus, you need to say their answers are completely confidential.

Do what I've just told you in the previous paragraph, and the people on your email list will be much more likely to answer your upcoming questions truthfully.

Next, you need to ask them emotion-based questions. You see, too many people ruin their email surveys by asking questions like: "What do you want in a product?"

Yet ultimately, the people on your email list don't care about what it is they buy, they only care about what it can do for them. In other words, they only care about the end-result.

So, instead, you should ask questions such as: "What is the biggest problem you are currently experiencing in your business/life?" Or: "What's currently missing in your business/life which would make it easier for you to achieve your goals?"

When you've got the answers to these questions, you then understand your prospects' emotions better. This means you can then play on these emotions in your future emails. This is a great email strategy and should make your email marketing campaign very effect.

However, once you've asked the emotion-based questions, you should also ask questions such as "What is your annual income?" and, "Describe your day-to-day life".

This will help you know what sort of people are on your email list. Plus, it will let you know what prices to charge for your products and services. For instance, if your list comprised of a lot of middle-aged bankers, you could probably charge high prices.

Yet a list comprising of many college/university students would mean you'd be better off charging lower prices and focusing on getting a high volume of sales.

Anyway, sending an email survey to your list can be a killer way of ensuring you're selling them products and services which they will genuinely be interested in buying.

Another useful thing is, you can also use the data you get from the survey to target more customers through ads as well

Hi Tom - I couldn't agree more with what you wrote about sending out surveys. Too many folks simply ignore this as there's no direct profit involved. This is a long term strategy and brings massive insight that will get you to truly understand your audience, be able to nurture them by providing value and thus be able to make more money out of your list in the long run.
