Newsletter subscription and registration info

Hi, I'm in the process of redesigning one of our community websites. It's a news site that's primarily focused on technical topics and has admin and CXO-level users. I'd like to get as many newsletter subscriptions as possible to eventually convert them to visit our corporate site.

I can't decide whether it's better to have the actual newsletter subscription form on the main page (above the fold) or just a "subscribe to our newsletter" image that they click and are redirected to another page where they provide their email and name as part of a registration process.

Part of this site redesign is a modern registration process where they can register by facebook, google, etc. Is it typical to require that the user register before receiving a newsletter, or should I make it a separate process and not bother linking the two systems?

Is it too much to require people register before receiving the newsletter, or do I want to make it as easy as possible for them to receive the newsletter and just have all the sign-up info (name and email address) on the main page with a checkbox for them to choose which newsletter they'd like to receive?

If it's better to have a simple form on the main page with the basic name/email requirement, then I don't know that I'd have enough information to later associate it with any account they would create, and would be concerned about account management issues.

Hopefully this is all clear.

  • 1. As much as I would love to give you a straight up answer.. there is no right answer.. BOTH WORK.. some marketers prefer one and other the other.

I recommend you test.. split test it.. and see the results. 'Testing the best way'

    2. Personally, I would do name and email only.. best for conversions. However, it's all about the way you phrase and sell it.

Here's is a brilliant example that you can look at and read over..

It seems pretty straightforward to me. You said you wanted to get as many newsletter subscriptions as possible. That being the case, I would personally suggest you do just that by making a very risk-free, simple and intuitive signup form and placing it in the most prominent place you can (typically above the fold on your page).

You asked: "Is it too much to require people register before receiving the newsletter . . . ?" Again, if your focus is getting as many sign-ups as you can, then don't require that people register before receiving the newsletter. If it's worthwhile and relevant in the niche, they will want more. If it's not, they aren't going to register. If that happens, you need to fix the newsletter content and writing, not the sign-up procedure.
