Collecting visitor's information - email addresses and what else?

Hey. I am looking for a bit of help.

I understand a huge amount of people purposely grab and save visitor's email addresses (from landing, squeeze pages) and form a list. What else do you put in this list?

Do you collect the visitor's name, address and also insert this into the list to use further along the line?

What is the most VITAL information to take along with the email address to insert into the list?

    Depends on the niche. Some niches I will collect the first name and email. Others just the email.

    For membership sites I collect first, last, email and sometimes other info if it is pertinent to the membership site.

    I'm with Rob on this, email or first name /email. You can get their city/state from their IP if that info can be useful. I do this with all data that I'm going to be generating leads with, if it doesn't already exist.

    You can also test and see if asking for their first name has any effect on your opt-in rate and if using their first name has any effect on conversion. I think with IM / MMO, that first name is less important, as most know it's just being inserted into the message and it's really not personal. Which is why many in the niche don't ask for it.

    The information collected from the visitors is highly valuable. Which pieces of information are valuable is relative to the niche of website or business. For example, I give highest importance to gaining their contact information i.e., phone number and email addresses. In addition their name, age, level of education and institutional affiliations are bonuses.
