How to reduce email unsubscribes.

I've recently learnt about a program called Unroll.me which is an app that allows the user to unsubscribe from all their mailing lists at the click of the button. I must admit, I used it for my personal use and found it the best thing since sliced bread, as a business owner though it gave me great cause for concern. Allowing users the ability to unsubscribe from an email list via a third party app which doesn't give you the chance to try and retain them is not good news for your email list. So this got me thinking that the only way around that is to make sure that your emails provide so much value that people don't want to unsubscribe.

So much sales revenue comes from email marketing if it's done correctly, so here are a few things you need to make sure you're doing it right at all times.

Segment your list:
Whichever systems you have in place to give you the ability to segment your list, use them. And if you don't have any, get some. If you're writing to everyone on your database as though they're in the same demographic and have the same spending habits then it's your own fault if people are unsubscribing. Segmenting allows you to be really specific with your offering and personalisation and is what people are looking for these days.

Be educational.
Not everyone wants to be sold to all the time. Often people want content that's of value to their daily life and circumstances and if you can provide that, you'll keep them on your list for you to make an offer to them the next time. A constant stream of sales material will turn off even the most loyal of customers so mix up your content and keep them interested.

Ask for feedback.
Once someone has used your service or bought your product, email them and ask for a review. This serves a few purposes;
1) it lets them know that you care. The fact that you're interested in their feedback means you're looking for ways you can improve on your offering.
2) It gives a relationship building opportunity. The more personal contact you can have with a customer, the better.
3) It gets them back to your website. This is where the sales page is don't forget, a few well placed ads will keep their interest and has the potential to encourage them to buy from you again.

Thank them.
Always use your email as an opportunity to thank your customer. Vouchers, coupons and special offers should always be used to make your customer feel valued and if they don't know what little treat they'll be given next time, they're likely to remain loyal.
Have you got any tried and tested methods of reducing your email unsubscribes?

Yes, being very personable with them and not ALWAYS "asking" or "taking" from them will help and go a long way.

Let them know you are a real person with a real Life . The more human you seem to them the more they will begin to Trust you which is a good thing

You got it right. Actually, those points you mentioned are really useful in email marketing because it is very difficult to keep your readers engaged as a lot of things are fighting for their attention.

What I think works, is that if you would consider proper timing on your email blasts and not bombarded them with information as that might be another cause for them to unsubscribe.

Asking for feedback/listening to your customers is a huge one. I've always believe you have to listen to what people want when doing business.

Aside from those you mentioned, value of the content stays the main reason why people keep us on their inboxes. We don't want to just stay there, we need to be read, understood, processed and bought (eventually). If your email marketing proves to be just another pile on the countless sea of unread emails then surely the option to unsubscribe will be welcomed.

I believe the most useful thing in your points is asking for feedback and actually responding to it, or thanking them after they provided it. The email blasts are already automated, but there is something cool about receiving a seemingly personal email. A message of thanks always useful.

We make sure to always segment our list. And yes, reviews are imperative to make sure that we let our customers know that we are constantly trying to make our product better and that we want to continuously be of service to them.

This unroll.me app IS scary. Solution: a great goodbye message (if the unroll.me app does provide us the opportunity for a goodbye message).

      Nope, nothing!
All you get is a message from Unroll.me saying 'you've been unsubscribed'

I question how a third party app can have so much power over someone's list, but if the user agrees to the terms and conditions passing on all responsibility to them then I guess there's not a lot you can do as a marketer - apart from, like I say, make your email content so valuable that they don't WANT to unsubscribe!

Because the Unroll.me app enables a user to unsubscribe from ALL their emails, then I guess it doesn't matter how great your content is. If a user gets sick of marketing emails they get in general, then that's it. They also unsubscribe from your list, even if your content stands out from the other emails they get...

If you are a master at email marketing, and you know you are selling real value stuff - don't be afraid of your unsubscription rate. For most of email marketers, it is an indication of their success...

    How?

Well, the freebie seekers and suckers unsubscribe when you finally start pitching them..and it's better to let them go...

Stats have proved that the more unsubscribers you have, the more money you are embraced with. Those who like your emails will BUY from you. Those who won't will NEVER. So stop caring about them and focus more on building relation rather than "adding value."

    Thanks

Great advice and a good reminder to focus on those that do like what you're doing rather than those who don't!

    There ARE NO TRICKS

    Seriously.

You just have to DELIVER what you promised.

Try not to BRIBE people to join. Digital bribes like free ebooks/booklets/checklists produce mostly worthless list members.

Look into REVERSE OPTIN types of content strategies.

In order for you to retain your email subscribers, you need to make sure that you constantly provide them with interesting email newsletters. Keep in touch with them and maybe give them some promotions if necessary that will keep the user engagement ongoing.

Have a regular flow of content. Keep the subscribers updated with what is new about your products or company. Personally, I get to open newsletters sent to me when I find an interesting topic relevant or related to what I subscribed for. I am more interested if there are updated articles, new products, or if ever a discount with the products being offered.
