Mailchimp import (Hard error + unsubscribes)

Hey there,

I have setup a campaign to my personal friends (well known to me), telling them of my change of job.

When I imported the list to Mailchimp it errors with a really high "Hard Error" rate, I cleaned the list up and removed the info@ etc it allowed to import.

BUT on import around 60% show as unsubscribed, which is odd, as I have never emailed to this list before, and the tool auto cleaned it as unsubscribed.

Any ideas what we are doing wrong?

Cheers,
J

Since these are friends, I would encourage you to send a personal email to each, simply saying hello and inviting them to join your list. Include an opt in form, maybe even make it a squeeze page. Yes, it would be annoying to copy and paste essentially the same email to each. However then they'd not be imports, and they'd all have their own IP address so you could see where they are now. Besides that, you'd be tempted to ask a personal question to each as you paste... and re-establish a closer relationship. Email marketing is about connecting with people. Use this startup as an opportunity to draw closer to each friend!

You should go for some other service providers like aweber, icontact or getresponse mailchimp is no doubt one of the best esps in the world but they are very strict with their customers when it comes to list import because they mainly prefer permission based double-optin databse.....

Yeah it is just very odd, as for example several of the emails are firmly friends, and would never have unsubscribed, but it seems that they are auto unsubscribing them.
