Gain More Subscribers with a .MOBI or .EPUB than a .PDF

Gaining and retaining subscribers to your online business is a lot like gaining and retaining readers to your ebook(s). It's all about credibility and value. If your prospective and current followers view you as a credible information source who provides consistent value that can help them improve their lives in some way, then you've already won half the battle right there.

Just about anyone can slap together a quick .PDF ebook with a generic front cover, upload it to a variety of different e-commerce sites, and call themselves a published author. This publishing model is called "vanity publishing" and, as someone who has been in the publishing business for over twenty years, I can assure you this is the least respected form of book publishing in the eyes of the legitimate media (e.g. reputable book reviewers, publicists, reporters, columnists, et cetera).

Deep down, you know this because you're not only an Internet marketer; you're also a consumer yourself. You want and expect good value for your money just like the next guy does.

So, you owe it to yourself--and to your subscribers!--to have that .PDF properly edited/proofread for quality control, to have a professional cover created for your ebook by a graphic designer (a person) rather than a template builder, and to have that .PDF converted into a more respectable format that can be sold through the proper online channels (such as the .MOBI files that are sold on Kindle or the .EPUB files that are sold on KoboBooks ... to name only two).

It's relatively inexpensive to do all this, but the extra attention to detail will make all the difference to your results. Why? Because then you'll have a decent product to send out to the book reviewers--a product they will actually take seriously and consider reviewing for you! A positive book review, completed by a reputable reviewer, is gold for any published author. It proves your credibility and value in the eyes of your current and future subscribers, and also in the eyes of those publicists, reporters, and columnists.

I outsource the work to a reputable ebook conversion company I met via LinkedIn. I provide them with the digital cover and interior files I use to publish my paperbacks and hardcovers online, and they convert them into the various formats for us. It only costs me around $0.50 CDN per page to have it done properly (professionally), so it's really inexpensive. This way, I now have both a paperback (or hardcover) and an ebook version of the title that I can sell worldwide which opens me up to an even larger audience than simply an ebook can attract. (Believe it or not, some people still prefer to read hard copy over soft copy which is why I always recommend people produce both.)
