Lessons Learned: Strict MailChimp Policy

Hello Warriors,

Just wanted to share some bad news in the hopes that you can learn from my mistakes.

Yesterday I prepared an email campaign using my paid MailChimp plan. Literally 2 seconds after I sent the campaign to subscribers, I received an email from MailChimp:

"Our automated abuse prevention system, Omnivore, reviewed your account.

It detected content or actions which either conflict with our Acceptable Use Policy, or present a significant risk to our deliverability.

The account has been disabled. You may log in at any time to export and back up your account data, download reports, or close the account permanently."

My email campaign was very straightforward and I had been sending similar offers to this list for over 2 years. Apparently MailChimp doesn't allow any of the following in email campaigns:
  • Work from home, make money online, and lead generation opportunities
  • Multi-level marketing
  • Affiliate marketing
Making MailChimp a terrible choice for online marketers, don't you agree?

Many times I use link cloaking for affiliate links, but this time I used the raw JV Zoo link in the email body in a rush. I'm guessing this is what triggered the script to fire. =(

Even after speaking with customer service, indicating this is my first offense in over 2 years, and committing to delete the list causing the compliance issue, they refused to reinstate my account.

I can always find another email service provider, but now I have to recreate all the autoresponders, templates, etc. in the new account.

My advice to other internet marketers: read the user agreement carefully and ask questions about your campaigns before sending.

Also, if anyone can provide some tips in the comments for email service providers that allow "make money online" and "affiliate marketing" email campaigns, I think it would be helpful to readers. Thanks and good luck!
