How long does it take to get a list big enough for conversions?

Ok, so I am newish to email marketing, about 2 months in.

So I hear all the time about people getting conversions from their landing page to their sales page.
Which I've only had happen one time. So my main focus is getting my email list to convert with emails. Which obviously isn't easy, I'm trying to learn how to build a relationship with my list but that's also hard. Hard doesn't bother me, Ill eventually learn how to properly do it.

But the question is how big of a list do you need? I've heard of people having lists of 1,000 subscribers converting. My lists are still small 400 subscribers on my two lists with no conversions. They're new lists so maybe I just need to keep adding to my list and cutting the fat until I have those 1,000 hot subscribers that convert? How long and how much do I need to spend until I have a list like that? Or can you convert a fresh new list of all brand new subscribers?

Technically 400 is more than enough to get conversions. So there is a problem.

    What niche?
    What is the traffic source(s)?
What are you offering to them to sign up?
    What are you promoting?
How often do you mail them?
    What are your open/click rates?
    How are you sending?
Do you test your inbox placement?

Ok so the niche is paid surveys

traffic source is solo ad, Its from a good seller so i know thats not the problem.

Im not offering them a lead magnet, but i dont know what youd offer them for this niche.

I mail them once to twice daily

open rate is from 20-50% click rates around 4% and im using an autoresponder. For inbox placement do you mean do I test the emails send out to make sure they go in the imbox instead of spam? yeah they all imbox.

I'm not sure I'm clear on this. Are you trying to get people to take individual surveys (like a lead gen offer) or are you trying to get them to sign up for a specific survey company?

If it's the first, I'm not sure what you'd send as a lead magnet either.

If it's the second, a simple one-pager on something like "How To Choose the Best Survey Company" with a checklist, using the company you want to promote as the example.

Its the second one, having them opt in to survey sites. Thats a really good idea for a landing page. I think I might also becoming off as spammy as well promoting a different offer every day to different survey sites. Its just hard to think of value to give them when it comes to survey sites. I guess every three days show them a different survey site and between those days sent them testemonies to the site I showed them the day before.

      "Value" is subjective.

For someone interested in making some pocket change filling out surveys, highlighting the various survey sites is valuable, because you show them options that they didn't know about before.

You can amp up the value by giving your take on each site, pro and con. For wannabe survey takers, this is good stuff.

Have you heard the expression "horses for courses"? It comes from the world of horse racing. Some horses do better in short races, others in long ones. Some run better on grass tracks, some on dirt. Some on dry tracks, others when it's muddy. Get my drift?

I imagine it's the same with survey sites. Some will work better for, say, a college student than a middle-aged housewife tapping on her laptop or phone while watching TLC.

Providing your own insights about each site shifts you from "spammy" promoter to trusted advisor. The second is a much better place to be...

Years ago when I started email marketing, I was seeing conversions with less than 200 subscribers. Over time I was seeing more conversions because I started to get to know my list and what they were interested in.

The best way to see conversions in a list is to first build a list around a niche, for example, health and fitness. So, you then only promote products about health and fitness.

    I hope this has helped.

The size of a list is irrelevant considering one person could just as easily convert.

People that are into paid surveys are looking for something free. My advice, niche each paid survey down and sell the traffic to relevant sites by adding additional optins when they first subscribe to your list. Big download sites sometimes do this (multiple optins at once).

A list of one subscriber can convert so as soon as you start getting subscribers you should start mailing them on a regular basis.
