I agree with the comments re: requiring your subscribers to open that first email to get their hands on the freebie. That way, you're conditioning your readers to open from that first message, and I've found this can have a real impact on open rates for the longer term.

A few other things that I've found to help...

Open loops

A copywriting tactic that's essentially about opening up a loop in your readers' brains and making them just need to discover the next part of the story. So in practical terms, you could include a teaser in your email about what they can expect from you tomorrow. A story, a tip, a whatever. Something they're going to really want. The theory is that they're already primed to open that next email. It can be done well and badly, but I've seen some good results with it.

Subject lines

Keep them varied. Try out different approaches, different formulas, different lengths, and so on.

Consistency

It should go without saying, but not being consistent can hugely damage open rates. When you're in the swing of emailing every Monday and Friday at 9am, for example, people come to expect your emails. If they're good, they'll be waiting for them.

Make them feel like personal messages

This builds on the point that was made about removing your logo. People don't want to feel like they're being sold to. Be conversational, talk to just ONE person (e.g. omit things like 'hi guys!'), and ultimately make them something that people will want to read. Engaging, entertaining, funny... Whatever style you deem appropriate for your audience. Just not boring :-)

I personally don't like the whole 'asking for the name' thing. I've noticed my opt-in rate is slightly higher when I only ask for the email address on a landing page, and there's lots of room for it going slightly wrong... People just enter their initials or some random letters, or they enter their surname instead, and the email doesn't end up looking as you intended. But hey, plenty of people would disagree with that - just my way of doing things :-)

In terms of the whole piece v asking them to click through... Depends on what your goal is.

If you're running a blog and your aim is to increase traffic (so you can monetise via sponsored content, ads, and so on), then in the email, you'd give a teaser of the content and get them to click through to the site to read the full thing. That way, you'd be more likely to fulfil that goal of more visitors.

If traffic to the blog isn't necessarily important though, and your aim is to send people to a sales page to make a purchase, for example, then you'd have the full content in the email, alongside a call to action to visit that sales page.

autoresponders have their limits, in fact problems come from email services ( example gmail, yahoo, etc. )

ANSWER: Facebook is an excellent way to build a list. But you have to remember here, anytime you are giving something away for free does not really mean that people are getting on your list for you. They are getting on your list for the freebie.

Questions 2, How many emails should i have on my list before i can really know whats working or not? My list is small & i don't want to jump to conclusions too fast.

ANSWER: You should be testing your list by split testing different emails and subject lines.

For instance, let's just say you have 100 people on your list.
You would send out the same email with a different subject line to list A (50 people) and list B (50 people).

Most autoresponders have a split testing feature. Well...maybe not all, but I use GetResponse and I know it does.

Open rates and click rates will vary. It's hard to give you an exact answer on who will open or not. It depends on a lot of factors.

Such As:

• Time of day you send out emails
• How often you send emails
• How engaged your subscribers are
• How clean you keep your list

Just to list a few.

After a few weeks, you should be able to have a general idea of your open rates. Just remember to clean your list ever 30-60 day of people that are not opening from the get-go. Because if you keep trying to send email to those that are not opening, it will hurt your delivery rates of those that are opening.

And as a side note, i am using this method for affiliate marketing & to also potentially create my own product in the niche.

It does not matter what type of marketing you are doing weather it be affiliate or your own products. Your list is your bread and butter. So don't send them promotion after promotion day after day. They will quickly unsubscribe! You need to have a system in place.

Day 1 - Promo product #1
Day 2 - Promo product #1 follow up
Day 3 - Promo product #1 Testimonials
Day 4 - Content
Day 5 - off
Day 6 - Video teaching something
Day 7 - off
Day 8 - Promo product #2
etc. I think you get the point.

Make sure you are just not sending promotion. Make sure at least one day a week you are sending your subscriber good quality content. Something they can learn from that will make them love you.

And last but not least make sure you segment your list well. Meaning, only send messages to that list that pretain to what they signed up for.

EX. If they signed up for a list building course send them things related to that only. You can sub niche it too. Meaning, if they got something about list building then you can send them thinks about traffic, because you need traffice to build a list. Get it?

So you got few options you can do. As Mr. @DIABL0 said.smart idea! you d send what you promised the visitor to their mailbox. But you could fall into an other problem. when the visitor enter disposable email (temporary address).
You can also use double confirmed optin, this will lower the optin rate but its better. you could also fall in tmp email also.

Other option is to integrate an email validation to your form. it validate the email address make sure it does exist before allow the visitor to submit the form, like https://neverbounce.com/

Securing web form is important. this will prevent list bombing and fake emails sign up

Question 2 - answer you can start with a small list ... But you , of course, need to grow your database. I think, snovio tool can help you to make it wider and verify emails, I usually use it in email marketing.

great questions, here's some advice from what I've learned in my own experience.

1) Driving traffic from facebook to an optin page definitely is great, I've had a few emails back in October that had open rates as high as 37%. I would suspect the issue might be elsewhere, so I personally would experiment with subject lines and the body of the emails you're sending.

The first 10-15 words of what your subscriber sees on your email is crucial.

Also, maybe check your campaign settings in your autoresponder, maybe its set to a default "from address" your subscribers aren't recognizing. I made this mistake several times, for example, if you have more than one "from address" in your autoresponder, it could be showing your subs a from address they don't recognize, therefore they'd think it's spam or they just simply pay no attention to it.

2) Also, how often are you mailing your list? In my personal opinion, if you aren't mailing your list at least once a day, no matter the size, they may not even be seeing your mails to even be able to open them. Simply because your emails are probably getting buried under many many other emails. So IMO, if you don't email at least once a day, it's hard to get their attention and get them to know who you are.


Don't be afraid of unsubscribes btw, if you provide value, you'll keep the right subs for you, your list, and your offers.

I'd think about the Facebook to opt in approach, and wonder if folks who sign up for your list really buy into you before signing up.

Example; if you run a well-stocked Wordpress blog, where you share ample free information, the folks who sign up know you offer value so they buy into you before signing up for your list. They really want your emails.They trust you. So when they get your emails in their inbox, they are opening 'em up.

If your open rates seem a bit low it is folks not buying into you, knowing you well enough, or trusting you. Think of ways to inspire them to trust you - blogging, offering ample value on Facebook, etc - before signing up, and those open rates will jump when folks want to get your emails, because they know what you are about.

First of all, is your mail server IP address blacklisted due to spam? If yes, you will have very low delivery rate and causing low open rate.

Hi Cameron. You have a very interesting topic. Unfortunately there is no hard and fast rules to it. I have tried email marketing and FB. Now I have been in Forum.

Online business just like any business. Sometimes up and sometimes down. But you must keep doing to see real results in the end. Good luck.

There's a lot of ways to set up a funnel and a lot of ways to capture email addresses. You just pick one that suits you and optimize.

My approach is cold emailing to purchased lists, and I have an autoresponder sequence that gets 75% + open rates throughout. These are people who don't know my name, they haven't sigend up on my page, they do not expect to get any freebies, they haven't seen my face (and won't ever), they won't find any blog, nor a video nor any other content on the web.

Why do they open my emails? Because I buy very targeted leads, because I clen my lists and because I write about something they want to know. Simple.

Now if my mailing infrastructure (i.e. server setup) is bad = IPs blacklisted or greylisted or if my domains get blocked by gmail ... open rates will plummet of course, because emails will not even get delivered.

If my emails are boring, open rates will plummet.
If I am just hyping and pushing affiliate offers my open rates will plummet.
If I send out the best content but the list is not targeted and subs are not interested in what I say,open rates will suck.

The challenge for you is to either try and optimize your facebook ad so your list is very targeted or segment your list by opens and clicks into smaller segments that again are very targeted.

At the same time optimize your subject lines, email content and promoting strategy.

An email lists that pays your bills is not built in a day.

Since you asked for numbers ... I wouldn't start split testing anything until you get at least 1000 subs on your list. Split testing 100 leads is a waste of time in my opinion.
Low numbers leave too much open to chance, relevant testing starts at 500 clicks, or 500 opens .. at least that's my experience and what I read and heard from others as well.

Hi: Make sure they doubled opt-in so they have to confirm their email address. This way you know they really want your information. In the confirmation letter ask them to white list you, so your emails won't go to spam. Never offer free things because you'll just get people looking for freebees. This is just my opinion and a lot of people don't agree. Hope this helps.

If your product for optin is not what people want, you are wasting money on ads, if you followed some one course to make money online, that could also be the problem,

When starting out, setup landing pages on WordPress and blog and have major optin systems on it, and do SEO only for this, then drive Free Traffic for testing, YouTube, Twitter,

YouTube is the best, even better then paid ads, if you know how to use it.

When you start with paid traffic, you must have money saved for testing, or you will go broke,

I haven't tested SEO or youtube yet. I pretty sure youtube is a great way. I see MMO youtubers that give value & build a following & send people to their email opt-ins. Seems to work great. Value first is always a good tactic!
