Should I get 2nd VPS for Mail server? or use same server as my website?

If you are planning to do any kind of bulk mailing, you should always have a separate server, domain, etc for handling that.
This will also protect your main domain in case you make any mistakes and blacklist your domain, ips, or server.
Always keep them separate. The only time I would advise against keeping them separate is when you have users opting into your page and you have an esp like GetResponse or something similar integrated right into your form on your website.

Use a seperate server because your ip might be blacklisted until you get a good sending reputation.

I would advise you use a more than one ip that can rotate when sending

I will use a separate mail server. I'm installing iRedMail now on a separate mail server.

- It is possible to see what your sending reputation is? (because I'd like to track how it progresses)

Say you have a very engaged list with high open and click rates with low bounces:
- Do you know if its possible to eventually get good sending score like Amazon SES, sendgrid etc...? OR can only these big companies do this?

Why do you want to send using your own server?

If your data is 1st person opt-in, why not stick with an autoresponder / smtp service?

Hi DIABL0,

Because the only real benefit I can see in using a 3rd party it that they already have a good sending score.

Its cheaper to use my own VPS and after I get a better sending score I'm guessing it will be very similar to a 3rd party SMTP anyway. After all every mail server would start from zero sending score and have to build it up over time.

I don't mind my server starting from zero sending score because most of my subscribers are active and if it ends up in the spam most would probably notice and move it to their inbox.

But this problem would only be temporary until I build up a good sending score.

I have the mail server set up and its sending out my newsletters.

I found these site from some googling:

According to talosintelligence.com my Email, web and weighted repution is Neutral

Accoding to mail-tester.com I have an 8.9 score (my webhost helped me set up the SPF, DKIM)

- I have a netrual sending score but @icloud.com and @att.netis seem to be blocking my newsletters, do you think this normal for a new mailing server?

- Once I start getting a good sending score do you think these will in be unblocked?

Hi, you can use senderscore from return path to monito your sending reputation.

You can sign up for free.

As for icloud and att.net blocking your IP, this is very likely due to the IP history or to the hosting service reputation.

att.net is very strict with blocking, may block your IP just because it was used once for sending spam, or if your host has a reputation of sending spammy emails / having customers who send spammy emails, if your IP is in the neighbourhood of spammers IPs etc.

As for att.net, there's nothing at all you can do about it except find an IP from a host that isn't blocked by att.net yet.

Believe me - I tried it ...

As for icloud, look at the bounce message, and see if there's a link in there where you can get more information. Usually there'll be a webform you can fill. You tell them you just acquired this IP new and ask them for unblocking.

This will work in most cases. As long as you keep your sending clean you will not be blocked again.

Hey Chris,

You can mail using the same VPS, however, you can only have throttling set at 500 per hour. Not sure if this is the same for all hosting, but it is for hostgator which is who I'm using.

Btw, don't buy that BS on setting up a second VPS server, they just want you to spend more money...
