Global Segmentation Challenge

Hi All,

I have a challenge...I need to separate my list into two segments EU and Rest of the World. ( post GDPR issue ) Any ideas ? I also need this to work in conjunction with a new sign up form so new subscribers go to the right segment.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks

Does it need to be real-time / automated?

Are you using an ESP to store / mail contacts?

Hi, Sorry for my lack of insight to reply correctly. There is no current link from the website to the list. That will come probably as just a contact form online. The list was built from various sources, mail contacts etc.

There are no campaigns going out at present. No automation, an there are no plans to link this to website purchases.

I can successfully segment the list into countries but this is messy. As mentioned I just need a way of grouping the countries of the EU, the Uk and the rest of the World.

      Thanks in advance

So you just have a list of email records and you want to segment them.

Do they all have a country field as part of each email record? In that, there is an existing way to identify the county of each email?

Hi, thanks once again for taking the time to reply.

No records at all it will be done purely on the geographical location as identified by Mailchimp. My current solution is to segment a country, then group tag them with the tag " EU " then when I send out a campaign send or not send relating to that field.

That clumsily provides a long handed solution to get me out of the first challenge, the next is how I populate these tagged segments with new users from the contact form that I will have to create on the website

    Have you spoken to mailchimp?

So you have already added tags to all your existing data and just looking for a way to do it with your forms?

    Hi,

Yes, after a little research yesterday MC confirmed that the only way I could achieve what I needed was to use tags. I played with that yesterday and it was successful. This fixes things short term but long term I need to make sure that I don't have to redo all the work as new subscribers enter the list.

    Thanks for your interest

Yes, after playing around a bit I contacted MC and they confirmed TAGS was my only option.

So the 10,000 strong list will have TAGS, EU, UK and WORLD. Is it possible to have the contact form setup so it populates the list with these TAGS> ?

    Regards

You would need a way to get the users country from their IP and add the tag.

You could get an IP database or use a service. https://www.ip2location.com

$49 per year for IP/country database or $49 per year for 100K lookup using their service.

If you're using a form that is on a website. Have a submit script created so when the user submits the form it gets the country and adds the tag then post it to mailchimp.

If users are coming to your form (squeeze page) from a link you are advertising. You could create a script that the link points to that gets the country from the IP and populates the form when the link is clicked. Or you could have 3 forms EU, UK, and World and the script just redirects it to the correct one.

Looks like I messed up...I combined the 4 lists I had and it removed all geographical data. So now I have no way of segmenting and then tagging. So frustrating !!
