Adding email captured offline to mailing list: Allowed?

I am thinking about using a Halloween photo booth as a lead magnet to build a mailing list for my local area.

Essentially, I would give them a free 4x6 photo of their kid if they agree to sign up for my site's mailing list.

1. Is this allowed by Mailchimp and the like?

2. How many emails would be too many to add in a day? I estimate I would probably be able to get a couple hundred in a single day.

  • One way can do it to make 100% legit is bring laptop or your smart phone and have them literally sign up with name and email online with you at booth through landing page or site you set up. This way literally as you are talking to them, they are signing up online and giving you permission to mail them.

    • Thanks for the input. I have thought about that, but there are a couple issues.

      1) That's an extra step that I don't necessarily have time for. Last time we did something like this we took pictures of about 400 kids in about 3 hours

      2) I won't always have internet access where I am at.

      This, and have the necessary details on a spreadsheet file. Then you can upload the spreadsheet file to Mailchimp.


  • Yes, you can import emails into MailChimp.

    A couple hundred per day shouldn't be an issue.

    I'm sure there is a certain number of emails that would trigger a manual review before they would let them be imported. I don't know what the number is, but sure it is above a couple hundred.
  • I have yet to find an autoresponder that will not allow you to upload a list to their platform.

    However, some companies will monitor that list and if the list has low open/interaction rates, they may terminate your account. This isn't the norm, but it does happen.
