Improving your email deliverability rate

Marketers often have a habit of continually sending email campaigns while forgetting if these emails were delivered straight to their recipients' inbox. That is a waste of resources. I, in particular, pay attention to these two factors to increase my email deliverability.

Consistency and volume

Don't send out emails in random intervals because it's what spammers often do. Instead, use a tool that allows you to send emails in increasing intervals.

Bounce rates

Your email recipient list might have address which don't exist, hence they'll bounce. The higher your bounce rate, the lower your domain reputation is so to keep bounced emails low, ensure the veracity of email addresses. Double check spellings and domains as there might be misspells or wrongly-used email punctuations (full stops and hyphens in particular).

What about you? How do you make sure your emails are delivered to your recipients' mailbox, and not the Other/Clutter or Junk/Spam? How do you improve your email deliverability?

My email list is less than 2000, so I'm using the free version of MailChimp, I check all the specifics of whether it's delivered? opened? etc.

Deliverability consultants will tell you that best practice is to do this every 30 days. However, if you have good open rates, you can get away with stretching it out much longer.

It's when your open rates are really low that it's important.

You could also move your unopens to another service and if you have problems with deliverability it's not a big deal since you were going to dump them anyway.

One thing I will mention its that every ESP, including mailchimp has about 10 tiers of users within their system.

"Free" users are going to fall right at the bottom of the list. The delivery that free users get is going to be some of the worst that is available on the network.

As you become a paid user, and depending on how your list and campaigns perform, you can move from 10/10 to 1/10, and the higher you go in the list, the better delivery you end up getting.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Anyone serious about email marketing should not be using free services if they want to maximize their ROI when contacting their list.

A slightly more advanced list cleaning strategy I've seen some of the top email marketing experts recommend (and do themeslves) . . . yes, you need to remove anyone who doesn't open anything for a month or two, from your main list, to improve deliverability.

But instead of deleting them, move them to a separate list, where you just ask them, every 6 months or so, whether they still want to receive emails from you.

Some people will have got busy for a while and just delete emails, but some time later will want to read them again.

I generally use these 10 guidelines with all my emails in order to boost email deliverability, .

      1. Write original content. Don't use swipes as is...
      2. Send your emails from a professional email address. Use yourname@yourdomain.com rather than yourname@gmail.com
      3. Scrub your list at least every two months by getting rid of people who never open your emails
      4. Use a link shortener to make your links more visually appealing
      5. Stick with simple looking emails rather than fancy templates
      6. Avoid "trigger words" that trigger your emails to go to the spam folder
      7. Avoid all caps and excessive punctuation in your subject lines
      8. Send emails at around 8am-9am EST or 3pm-4pm EST for most opens
      9. Have CTA's in all your emails (get them to click the link)
      10. Test as much as possible

I use a tool called NeverBounce. There are others. You basically run your list against it and it will tell you what addresses are phony. Like others said in this forum. You have to purge email addresses that just don't open your emails. Some remove them if they don't click on the links. However, I wouldn't necessarily delete these email addresses as they can be used for custom audiences in Facebook (they did show some interest at one time). I would just export them out and keep the openers live.
