Sending emails, particularly cold emails, can be tricky. Do it correctly and you'll have high conversion rates. Do it wrong, and your emails are automatically filtered out to Junk.

Wrong target

And hence, wrong recipients. As one of the most crucial elements in email marketing, it is important that you curate your email database for quality leads. For example, if you're selling an ERP software, your target should be accounting professionals and not first-time mums. Make sure too, that crucial business decision makers are included in the list.

Email is too long

No one has the patience to write an email that's longer than Othello. Keep your message concise yet engaging. Key details must be broken down to bulleted points, while body copies should be limited to a few paragraphs.

No personalization

Studies show that personalized emails have 26% higher open rates when compared to generic, non-personalized emails. Using your subscriber's first name (e.g. Steve, here are new recommendations for you) is sure to pique your recipient's attention, and will make the feel like you are directly talking to them.

I've always looked at the purpose of email copy being to get the click and not to sell.

So if you're promoting affiliate / CPA offers, you don't need great copywriting skills. You just need to create enough curiosity to get the click.

I understand that approach for CPA, but for affiliate marketers, I think writing for the click, and taking people out of their inbox prematurely, is a bad idea.

I mean, if we aren't building a relationship with people and just sending them to offers, what's the point of building the list in the first place? May as well just send that traffic directly to a sales page.

I agree you don't need copy skills. Copywriting in email can work against you in most cases, especially when you don't have the chops to pull it off. Best just be yourself and talk to people like they are human beings.

My core business is generating leads for niches that have mass appeal. So building a relationship with users on a list isn't required and is just a means of driving traffic.

I also don't look at affiliate marketing the same, it just positioning to the advertiser to me. Wherewith CPA offers, I'm always working with a network and they are a step between me and the advertiser and the network is basically the affiliate. With affiliate marketing, I'm the affiliate and work directly with the advertiser and can have some perks over working with a CPA network.

I 100% agree. Especially if you have a strong lead gen plan.

The other mistake that most Affiliates make is forgetting that behind every subscriber is a person. So as an affiliate you must also consider that not only send out too many promotional emails.

Start adding more value and building solid relationships with your email list subscribers, be personal, share some of your exciting life events. Make them look forward in opening your emails. The more you add value to them and building relationships the more you profit.

    True. Some more suggestions -

Not warming up your email outbox

Don't start sending thousands of emails daily out of the blue. Start with 10 emails a day and build up slowly. Keep your domain reputation up for best delivery rates.

    Follow ups

3rd or 4th email are the ones which get the most replies. So don't stop after the first email, schedule the follow up chain in advance.
