Should you slowly step away from email marketing?

Reaching out to customers has never been faster and agile than before. Remember the days of yore when marketers had to include inserts inside that latest magazine subscription you just paid for? Now, it's as simple as entering your email to sign up for newsletters.



And email is still the primary driver of communication. I, for one, always read emails on my personal inbox for updates. Salespeople constantly email their clients for updates and then some.

But email works

And yes, indeed it does. We all check our emails several times a day - when we wake up, when stuck in traffic, when eating lunch. All sorts.

And not everyone would want to receive marketing solicitations sent via Messenger or WhatsApp. You might even get blocked for doing just that. To quickly summarise it - email is email.

Other medium would eventually take over

And this partly correct, especially when you're trying to communicate with a decision-maker. Majority of businesses often have loads of email coming in their inboxes, and the more emails they receive the lesser chance your paltry email is read, no matter how good the writing is.

It's all about oversaturation. Need to quickly advertise your new SEO course? Email. Looking for content writers? Email. Everywhere I go emails always arrive. People eventually get tired of reading whatever email they receive, hence the automatic trip to the Trash items.

There are alternatives

No, I still personally don't recommend Facebook Messenger especially when dealing with B2B clients. LinkedIn is emerging as an alternate to email marketing and has a faster response rate than the latter. SMS marketing is another, as it's more personalized and your clients are handpicked.

You just have to pick your approach correctly.

    People get tired of sameness. People get tired of getting emails from incompetent marketers who have no real value to add to their lives on the daily. The medium is rarely the problem, it's the people who use it.

    Over saturation is an opportunity for smart marketers to do something different.

    Email remains one of the least expensive ways to acquire and retain customers. A good email list is like an open bank cheque issued to you by Bill Gates and you can write whatever amount you like on it.
    Anyone experiencing declining returns on his email should hire a good copywriter to review and revise the content of his emails.

    Email marketing is an evergreen technique to generate leads for a business. It is a slow process, but one has to do it in an effective way. Some time Linkedin marketing or SMS marketing behaves as a good alternative to email marketing.

    I wouldn't recommend anyone to step away from email marketing unless they don't really need it. Email marketing is one of the finest ways to be heard. Yes, the email open ration still lingers around 20-30% for many marketers but it doesn't mean you have to step away from it. I think using as many correct mediums is really substantial for marketers. There is an extensive glossary available online about how to write best subject lines, the best type of content, the usage of CTAs in your newsletter, so on and so forth. So, I dont think it is a bright idea to leave out email marketing from the campaign your content strategy.

    The one problem with email marketing, is so many people use the same tactics and it gets over saturated. You really want to stand out, and be different. Being the same won't get you great results.

    But email marketing definitely is still great. The best IMO. I think too many also focus on the numbers of the leads they get, instead of the quality of the leads.

    Yes, its a numbers game, but you really only want people on your list who really want to hear from you.

    Regardless what methods you choose, you should always point your traffic and referrals to a funnel to collect their email.

    I always double confirm them, to ensure they want to be on my list and so I know they'll be engaged leads.

    Yes, I do lose out on leads doing this. And some people don't like that. They just think of it as a numbers game.

    But I don't mind. I rather have a quality lead, than a lead that won't open and act on my emails.

      thats true, but one should rather not buy solo ads for example with double optin haha

      I'm the complete opposite. I've always used single opt-in. I'll still have all the leads that would have confirmed and likely to be responsive. But I also have all the others that wouldn't have confirmed. However, you don't know why they wouldn't have and it's not always because they weren't truly interested.

      Those that aren't responsive within a reasonable time frame, I just move to another account. Which I aggressively follow up until they respond or it becomes obvious that I'm beating a dead horse and remove them.

      Before removing I'll also test using gmail/gsuite accounts, as they tend to have very high deliverability. That way I can check and make sure there wasn't a delivery issue.

      Anyway, works for me.

    Been testing SMS for a certain niche and helping local businesses. It works pretty damn well.
