Multiple ESPs and Unsubs

New take on a question I asked once before...I send three distinct emails about three distinct topics on three separate domains. When people unsubscribe, they're unsubscribed from all three - all or nothing.

So does Can Spam mean they're unsubbing from the list or from the company? My umbrella company name is at the bottom of all emails, but what if I used the name of each domain/list instead and put each list on a separate esp? Then they'd be unsubscribing from the one the list on that esp but from not the others. If they wanted off all lists, then they'd have to unsub from all three individually. Is that kosher? Or legal?

At least half the time I unsubscribe from a list I'm on more than one list of that marketer...maybe I downloaded something or bought more than one product ....when I hit unsubscribe I have the choice of unsubscribing from one of several lists....or from all of them.

The question I have - when they sign up are they signing up for all three lists? Do they know that? Why not give a choice for unsubscribes so they can decide on all or some?

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

They know they're signing up for three lists. My esp has a preferences link and an unsub link at the bottom of every email. No one clicks on the preferences email - I don't know if people know what it's for - and the unsub link does not give them any options. It just unsubs them from everything.

  • Sure. You can make them unsubscribe from each list without unsubscribing from the entire list.

You're free to do that. It's legal.
