Hi Fellow Warriors,

EDIT FOR CLARITY:

I run my own self-hosted autoresponder (finally had to cut ties with Aweber) and I've been having trouble with my Gmail Users getting their mail from me deferred for up to 12 hours or even not at all. My Host is a host specifically for email marketing and I'm on a Smart Mailer. They throttled back my Gmail users back to 100 per hour, but since most of my lists are comprised of Gmail users (as I'm sure most marketers' lists are), it has really slowed down my email delivery. I'm asking below to see if I can segment out my Gmail users and set them separately to go out at xxx per hour, but it be more than 100.

END EDIT...

I was recently told that Google only allows so many emails per hour to come into their email users before they start deferring the rest to who knows where (certainly not where we want them...in the inboxes)!

The problem is that I've heard alternate answers from a few people and of course, the 'Big G' doesn't tell me in a search, unless I'm searching for the wrong keywords.

Does ANYONE have a true answer to this?

Also, does Yahoo do the same thing? Who else does it?

I've decided that I need to maximize my email marketing efforts by segmenting ALL Google/Gmail/GoogleMail users into their own segment and limited to a specific number per hour to keep from any deferrment happening, if anyway possible!

Any help from you guys that "Email Is Your Business" would be more than greatly appreciated!

Thank You,

Scott Raven

I am not sure what you are doing, but if you are emailing and receiving at a large rate then a free service such as Google or Yahoo should not be used. I would get something like smartermail or autoresponder like aweber.

You could also try something like viralinbox, they have a free service and you can set up as many email boxes that you want

      Hi Al,

      Thanks for the reply.

I use Interspire through a Smart Mailer at a Hosting Company that is designed specifically for Email Marketing.

I suddenly had trouble with any Gmail users getting mail Deferred from their inboxes for anywhere from 12 hours to never. They throttled it back for Google users of any kind to 100 per hour. I was trying to research more because another marketer told me it was 200 per hour before they started deferring mail.

I'm just trying to come to a definitive answer to see if I can have the throttle moved higher since most of my subscribers (all double opt in) are Gmail users. I'm sure that's the same with most marketers since Gmail is free and has more features than most free services. Plus, a lot of business users have their company set up through Google Apps for their domains, as I do, and that means their email is going through the exact same way as Gmail users when mailing to them through an autoresponder.

Hope that clears it up a little on what I'm trying to find out. I had Aweber for almost 10 years before I decided to go self hosted, because of their delivery rates dropping and their costs kept rising (especially if I forgot to delete unsubscribed before the billing cycle ended and they put me in the next higher level because they charge based on users and not based on how much mail you send)!

Anyway, thanks for the response. I'll await any other advice you or others might have.

That has not been my experience. I've had no issue with delivering a high number of emails to gmail or other ESPs. Nothing in my experience would suggest that they only take a certain number of emails at a time.

Thanks, Jacob. I do know from my Server Logs that I'm getting Error 421 several times during each mailing I ever do. According to Google, that means that it is "temporarily blacklisted or deferred" and it will try to be delivered again with hopefully better results.

I've just suddenly dropped my Open Rates from 50 to 100 on a list of previous buyers list that has about 2500 contacts on it. I've had a few deferred for about 12 hours and some not make it at all.

I'm trying to figure out what happened to my list over the course of that time, because I dropped from a minimum of 50 opens and 25 to 30 clicks at least...now I'm lucky to get 20 to 30 opens and I haven't gotten more than 6 clicks in weeks! I just don't understand it. My mail server company has checked everything from top to bottom and left to right to be sure everything was set up correctly on their end with their Smart Mailer and Dedicated IP Address. I even have a New IP Address or at least one that has been Dormant for a long time. I check Blacklists daily. I check my IP Reputation daily. I remove Bounced Emails hourly.

I've been "warming up" the IP Address slowly. Very few emails mailed per day. Slowed the send rate down very slow compared to normal (less going out per hour). All of this in an attempt to keep the IP Address safe from SPAM Complaints or anything else. I've also made changes to my email structure in an attempt to make it more attractive to the ISPs and not trigger typical SPAM Triggers.

Anyway, long story short...things went to crap all of a sudden and I was afraid it had something to do with Google Deferring my emails.

      Thanks for your help.

I'll keep trying to figure it out! :-)

    Hi,

If you're using interspire with your own dedi server you need to configure that in
    the PMTA (Power MTA).

There's a way to set how many emails per hour to deliver to each ESP (gmail, yahoo, msn...)

      Hi shabtay,

That's what I'm trying to figure out...how many per hour should go to Gmail, Yahoo, and any other ones that start deferring after a certain number per hour hits.

Do you know what that magic number is?

      Thanks,

      Scott
