How big should my list be?

So i have starting using a pop-up opt in form on my website and have acquired about 4 email addresses on my first day using the opt-in form. I was wondering how many people I should have on my list before I start sending out mass emails about discounts and such? Thanks!

I would get an auto responder series set up as soon as possible. That way, everyone who subscribes will automatically be taken through a sequence without any extra work on your part.

    Size doesn't matter!

No really, focus on building a relationship with your list of BUYERS. As the song says, "Love the one you're with"

He can't possibly build a list of buyers if he is using a popup on his website.... That being said, you should definitely focus on building a relationship with your list regardless of your list size.

You should have set up your follow up messages when you set up your pop ups. It is always a good idea to build up a relationship with your subscribers. Find out what their concerns are so you can find the products or services they need.

I agree with bnorton. You should create an autoresponder series to save time and start building relationship and rapport with your list. Also, since discounts can be time sensitive, you can broadcast your discounts any time or I suggest every other day or two days. The size of the list doesn't matter. You should start building rapport with your list right away.

Sometimes we can become blind to our customer's needs. You have only 4 subs and already want to profit from this tiny list. Many people build list of hundreds or thousands before selling.

Would you buy a product from someone without knowing them? That is why people use one time offers in their funnels because at that very moment of subscription is when the customer is the warmest, after that you will need to further the relationship.

People suggest you to use an autoresponder because its a rapport builder without much work except at the outset. A lot of people don't ever realize they are getting autoresponder emails.

Perhaps at this point, only use your list to let them know about your new content or blog post, show them value in the content and then at the end of the content pitch them something relevant.

If you just start sending offers already they will unsubscribe. I make it a point to unsub from poor email ARs because its feedback for the mailer and I don't want to be sold something in every email.

Then what do you suggest I begin sending to my very small list?

Start sending out valuable emails today, and ask yourself: "How do I engage my list, so they chat with me, and me with them, and how do I build trust, to benefit both parties through sales?" All the best!

As bnorton2010 said, set up your autoresponder series. A welcome email for new subscribers and then the next emails which would depend on what kind of business or niche you have. Don't sell up front on your first email. That would turn your subscribers off and probably unsubscribe. You can do that when you've built your list and your business as well, because by that time you've built your credibility and earned the trust of your audience too.

Don't make a mistake by counting your numbers on your Lists because in List Building you need only Quality not Quantity because you can have a lot of leade from Fiverr or other cheap traffic sources like adf.ly but the thing you need is only Quality

Its better to have 20 buyers than having 2000 dirt number on your money making List

    best of luck

Start emailing NOW. You've only got 4 subs, but it's best to establish the habit/practice of emailing your list OFTEN. So when you do hit that 1k, 5k, 10k+++ subscribers, you're in a better position to really build up that relationship... because you started from the beginning.

You always need to focus on building your list and breaking even as you build it by building a sales funnel that allows you to break even - this way you are building your list for free. There is no limit, when you build a list, you need to focus on building a big a list as possible. The bigger the list the more money you make but start e-mailing them instantly even with 2 subscribers. E-mail marketing is a skill you need to master

Also do not churn and burn your list and always provide value to your list as opposed to pitching them every day Stand out in your followers inbox by e-mailing them tutorials, stories (people love this) and using them to touch on their core values so they resonate with you; if you apply this rule you can make money even with a small list however you want to focus on getting in fresh leads daily because not everyone is going to resonate with you. Some people will hate you and some people will love you

No need to wait until your list will grow. As many already said above start sending them your emails right away. Autoresponder is the best decision. We use to send a welcome email right after subscription. Then a bonus email with some useful stuff whatever your niche is. Some informative emails will be good too. Just mix educational, informational and promo emails. It is easy to this with autoresponder. You set when to send the first email, when the second one. You may plan a follow up series in advance for a month or two. Then you can add new emails to your series. Or you may send a broadcast if you have a hot offer for everyone.

One thing you have to consider - they are waiting some useful stuff from you and on regular basis.

    Hi,

You should start sending out emails from day 1.

I've had students come to me for help and when I've asked them how
big their lists were some have said well into the 1,000's.

When I asked them how soon and how often they send out emails to
    them some of them say:

"I wanted to wait until I had my first few hundred on my lists".

By that time the FIRST FEW HUNDRED have either forgotten them or have
joined other lists and have gone COLD.

So don't fall into that trap.

Touch base with them right away and use your own brand and personality
to communicate with them right away.

Ask them what they need help with - ANYTHING that will build that initial
    trust and relationships.

It really depends on what your goals are from this list.

Are you building your list just so you can send out discounts?
Or are you building your list so you can give them training or provide valuable information?

If you have no clue, i suggest you create a 10 part follow up sequence with training, then you can automate the process and focus on building your list bigger.

Once your list has grown substantially you can start thinking of broadcasting with your recommendations and discounts to people who have gone through your training material. It will make promotions easier as you will have provided value first and you'll be considered an authority in your niche.

    Hope this helps!

    One.

The first person who subscribes, on the first day of attracting traffic, may be a customer. He needs to hear from you on that day, and again either the next day or the day after. As does every person on your list, which is why you have it all automated in an "autoresponder" so that everyone who subscribes gets the same email series in the same order, each starting on the day that they subscribed.

"Discounts" may not be a good idea at all. If you start off by deciding to "compete on price", the only way is down. Not my choice.

Here are a few posts/threads that will get you oriented for the whole process of listbuilding, how it works, why it works, and how to go about doing it - if you read them carefully enough.

Wow! Thanks for all of this information it is great. My only thing is that my budget is very tight right now and I don't have a lot of money to spend on an auto responder program. My opt-in form is used VIA a Wordpress plugin which means that I would have to either integrate the plugin with an auto responder somehow or get new software. I think I will just do some hard manual work for the first few emails. Then when I do get that first sale, it will feel like I earned it.

Start up an autoresponder sequence and in the first few emails send them to a survey or poll so you can find out EXACTLY what they need..

Then build a rapport with them and then satisfy those needs

    1. What did you use to get them hooked?

E.g. what is your popup saying? That's your promise, deliver on it (hopefully it's not a lame, subscribe to my newsletter, but more "Know the 5 coolest tricks I learnt the hard way with cold emailing, let me send that straight to your inbox".

    2. Deliver and over deliver on that value proposition. Give them 10 super cool valuable tricks that they can gain immediate value from.

Build your auto responder based on that.

Test and iterate at what point it's a good moment to sell them, but give value continuously.

Set up an autoresponder or follow-up series that sends emails to your list on a time schedule (First email 2 days after optin, 2nd email 3 days after 1st email, etc.), so that you wont have to worry about sending out mass amounts of messages at a time, only if you would have some sort of special holiday event or something like that.

The short answer is that you'll need a list of thousands to make any money as only a small percentage will ever convert. Focus on building your list and building a rapport with them. This is very important. You can't just blast people with promotional messages anymore and hope to make money.

People have become blind to commercial messages, and Gmail makes it very easy to avoid them. (The "Promotions" tab)

Avoid the word "Free" in your subject line. It WILL be ignored. Most consumers these days know that very little is actually free in this world.

Everything said so far I agree - and here's another thing to think about. Whether you have 1 person or 1000 people on your list, you want to email them right away and continue it because.... that 1 person doesn't know he's the only one. For all he knows, he's one of 200K. However, don't expect to make money with 1.

Don't wait around once you have one subscriber start sending broadcasts once a day or every second day.

Send them PPL and CPA offers, then once you can get 20 clicks a day start swapping or click banking.

I have to disagree with doing this---probably because I believe in actually developing a healthy relationship with your list.

You won't be able to do both simultaneously.
