Any tools for testing email addresses

Does anyone know of any tools that will ping a list of email addresses (Not send to them) to see if the addresses exist?
I am doing some list cleaning and this would save me a load of time.

Would it be able to distinguish between an existing-but-unattended email address and one that's actually in use? I think that's what you'd really need it to be able to do, for it to have much value?

Most autoresponders have methods (sometimes selectable/variable) of removing the "regularly bouncing" email addresses from the list, and I suspect that may be about as good as you can do, in this regard.

      Thanks Alexa.
Before seeing how engaged the person is with their email and my content I have a more fundamental problem of making sure the email address is correct.

I want to clean this list BEFORE importing it into an autoresponder or ESP. They tend to not like a list with many bounces.

I am almost certain it is technically possible to ping an email server/address to see if it exists. I am hoping someone has an app to do it for a few hundred emails at once.

Context: this is an old list I am taking over for a company and getting it up and running again.

Yes it's possible. Yes there are apps. Are you not able to locate something in a google search?

You can also do it yourself but would need some programming skills to automate it.

Hi James, a google search did not throw up anything that looked trustworthy or something that required programming skills which I lack.
Best case was if someone here had a recommendation of something they used themselves.

          Thanks,
          Alan

I don't have any experience with any provider's I saw in search results so I can't say what is trustworthy. At some point you will have to commit to a solution if you are not going to build something yourself. I can understand your concern with inputting list info!

            Good luck!
