Interspire/PowerMTA IP Rotation

Hello. I'm fairly new to this and I'm hoping someone here can give me some info about IP rotation.

What is the recommended number of IP's to have in rotation for approximately 480,000 subscribers with daily newsletters? I've tried searching on Google, but I can't find anything that addresses this topic and explains why multiple IP's are needed or provides any rule of thumb to determine how many to use. Please help. Thank you!

the number of IPs required will depend on how many emails you want to send per hour and the quality of your list.

Yes,It depends on how many emails you want/need to send per hour. Also it depends on how many emails are gmail, yahoo, hotmail and so on.Because every ESP have their receiving emails limit per hour.If the IP is new you need to send about 100-150 emails per hour and slowly increase . If you need to send 500,000 emails per day:
500000/24h = 21000emails per hour. If you start sending 100 emails per hour per 1 IP adress ,you need to have 21000/100=210IP's .

There are many things that you need to consider when it comes to setting up your own SMTP server with rotating IP address.

    1. IP address reputation - When you are sending out emails via a server/IP address, it is usually an unknown reputation. You need to start sending small amount of emails like 1000 per day for a single IP address for about 20-30 days. This process is known as IP warming.

    2. Email throttling - This talks about the rate of sending per hour. When starting out to warm IP addresses, you need to set a limit of about 1000 email per hour or lower. After 20-30 days of warming process, you can set it higher.

    3. Earn a good reputation - As long as you are emailing to a list of optin subscribers (NOT purchased list), you should get very little unsubscribes and very little spam complaints. If so, most ISPs will recognize your IP address as "trusted" and will allow your emails to be sent to their users.

So where does IP rotation comes in?

IP rotation is needed when you need to send out a large amount of emails from the start. For example, if I have 50,000+ subscribers and to be able to send out to all 50,000 for my new SMTP server, I'll need to have 50 IP address for rotation. Each IP address will be given 1000 emails to send in an hour. And, since it's PER IP rotation, it can take me about 20+ hours to send out to ALL 50,000+ subscribers.

However, if you can endure the wait, a good IP reputation can allow you to send as much as 10,000 emails per hour, which means I can send to 500,000 subscribers base on 50 IP address.

I have a dedicated SMTP server with 31 IP addresses (fully warmed up) that allows me to send up to 300,000 subscribers each time.

I hope this short explanation helps. There are more to cover like setting up SPF, DKIM and feedback loop but the above should be enough to understand.

@joseph I do not think its good idea to send out 1000 emails per ip per day to warm up the ips.. I would recommend 100-250 emails only per day per ip and only to opt in list to get good reputation.

If you intend to send out LARGE amount of emails, then perhaps you will be looking at that number. 100-250 is a very safe number and most ISPs would not even pay attention to it.

4 x Class B /24's would be best for ongoing delivery to this list.
Domains should be 1 per 5 ips. Each domains should use 5 unique sub domains.

You will also have better success using RIPE or APNIC ranges as well
ARIN for whatever reason does not have as good delivery IMO.
