First you need to have a traffic source either free or paid that you are going to use to drive traffic to your > squeeze page then the squeeze page is going to convert that traffic into leads that you can then email using your autoresponder.

Once you have that in place and you are building a list you then start emailing it,

You build relationships with your list, you promote products to your list etc. This is the gist of email marketing.

Choose a free email marketing service with lots of useful resources e.g Mailchimp, CampaignMonitor etc. You'll learn reasonably quickly if you start using the product/reading their materials.

Just want to add that once you do create a list, your onward success will depend on how
you deal with your list. People subscribe to get high quality free content. so long as you can go on giving them regular good information around the topic they subscribed for, they will start to like and trust you, and, thats when they are likely to buy from your recommended offers.

Your question is very general, but here are six threads which - between them - cover the basic essentials of "how to do email marketing" ... they're a starting-point, anyway.

What are the essential things to know about list building?

Lists: How Long to Presell - Averages

    Website or squeeze page

Where to get reports to give away on opt in page?

    Autoresponders vs. Broadcasts

The process of email marketing :
    List Building.
First you will require an email list for people to subscribe to, this is easily achieved by using an opt-in page or form which will be provided by your email marketing service. You will also be able to upload lists that you may already have ie; colleagues, clients, business associates, etc.
    Bribing your visitors.
The most common way to build your email lists is to offer something to entice visitors to enter there contact details to your opt-in form ie; free report, free software, newsletter, etc.
    Managing your lists.
Depending on your email provider, most should give you the ability to create a variety of lists. This is helpful if you want to separate your subscribers by gender, ethnicity, location, etc.
    Mailing to your lists.
Once you have started building your email lists you can send them manual or automated messages. Most services will allow you to create a series of pre-written messages called a 'campaign' & set each message to be sent at a certain time ie, 1 day after sign up, 3 days after sign up, etc.
If you are short for time/experience there are tons of services that will actually handle the whole process for you. Online marketing had exploded with hungry internet marketers in the last 5 years which has made it really easy to outsource this kind of work.
Here is a list of popular email services:

    Aweber.com
    iContact.com
    Mailchimp.com
    Infusionsoft.com
    GetResponse.co

    First you need a list.

You can either grow a fresh list or use your existing relationships as your list (like your customers or old prospects who know you very well) . When you have atleast 1000 subscribrs then you can think about monetizing. Best way to do that is by using affiliate marketing.

Building your list is the easiest part. Developing a strategy to build a relationship with it is (imho) the most critical part (know, like, trust).

Here's a brief outline of the steps you should follow:
    1. Research Niches - Find a niche you like, one that you can be considered an expert in and one that has the potential to make money.
    2. Pick a niche
    3. Set up an opt-in page - You can set up an opt-in page with Leadpages or Getresponse fairly easily.
    4. Set up an autoresponder and email database. - The database is your list of emails and the autoresponder manages your messages. Getresponse is affordable and easy to set up and use.
    5. Generate traffic - Send traffic to you opt-in page to capture email addresses for your list. There are hundreds of ways to get visitors to your opt-in page, but a few sources are Facebook Paid Ads, Solo Ads, Adwords (can get very expensive), Bing PPC, Youtube (Video Marketing) and Yahoo Answers.
    6. Email Your List - So now you've got the list, start emailing. Develop a relationship with your list, nurture, education and recommend products that can solve a problem, answer a question or make their lives better in some way.

That's it in a nutshell. Of course there's a ton more to learn to really be effective, but that the framework.

I agree, before you try to get traffic you need to make sure that the traffic that you buy/generate will meet good quality contents and a well-made opt in page, if you don't you will just be wasting your time and money..
Having a sales funnel where you expose your clients to a series of offers where they can choose from cheaper or better alternatives 2 at a time. Meaning it is better giving 2 alternatives at a time than having 8 alternatives in one place, as people don't like to be presented too many choices at one time.

    Of course...

There's more to it which you'll learn as you go.

If you are a beginner best way is create a nice blog and publish this blog on google plus, but don't forget to tick over "also send emails to these uses" check box. This will show you initial results.
Later on you can buy email ids from any distributor and keep sending mails every week.

I am promoting an email series in weight loss solutions. It is positioned as a free course to be delivered over 10 days. My confusion is that is the FREE COURSE a good enough offer on my solo ad and landing page or do I still need to include another one time free offer like a report on a good weight loss topic available instantly on signing up.? My initial campaign is built around the course, so, if I need to add another report, then I have to change the focus of the landing page to get people to subscribe only to get the free report.

I am not clear if I need to make this change or simply test my existing funnel with different solo ad sellers to see how the offer converts. Can somebody give me clarity on the most effective way to move forward?

For sure you have lot of possibilites to do email marketing with your offer. But most important is to users which will want to subscribe for your course. I think that you can add more value with one time free offer and make good email creation for it which will have also posiibility to join for your newsletter with free course. Those value can be free report or - personal survey which will make your free course more targeted. But remember that also important is call to action - possibility to subscribe for your newsletter.

Often solo ad sellers will only promote to a free offer.
I'm a bit hazy on why you want two free offers, but
    have no plan for them.

Use one free offer as the opt-in, and create (or do the
affiliate thing) to offer something paid at the thank you page.

Better yet, when they get to the thank you page, give them
an unexpected free bonus. You can offer paid "Extras" in
    future emails.

Take note on Alexa's post(s). There is a lot of good information
that is offered there. Even though I still use a squeeze page,
I have found that offering worthwhile content can be a much
more valuable tool in gaining people's interest and trust.
These things not only increase opt-in rates, but also the
percentage of people who actually open future emails.

One other thing, make sure that you know your readers.
If your information on your squeeze page is not
properly targeted, your emails will be lost on many of
your subscribers (partly the problem with the squeeze page),
as future emails may not pertain to what they wanted when
    they opted in.

What Alexa did not point out (specifically) is that by using
content marketing to grow a list, if reader does not join a list
immediately, they will enjoy the content and will most likely
be back to join your list another day. Using content may
be slightly slower, but is more reliable for purposes of
    targeting a readership.

Thanks for the inputs. Will use the suggestions to improve my funnel. One question - if I create a very good free report as an OTO and re-work my solo ad to sell a click to get this report, then once a person actually subscribes to get the report, is it okay of my email series also takes over or do I have to specifically ask them again if they would like to receive my regular content?

Rather than releasing into a sales concept, make the email about them.Instead of your items and all the amazing things you can sell, create about your list associates problems and how to fix them. Your services and items can be presented as part of that solution.

They certainly can be! It depends on how well you choose your target audience compared to how well you've chosen your solo seller.

if you've tried one method for a while and you're not satisfied with the results after tweaking things a bit, try another method. Your goal is to eventually scale up with a couple of proven traffic methods.

Yes, you are tight. Online marketing can only work if one can actually address burning problems in that niche, and get people to like and trust you by providing genuine solutions. Only then are they likely to take your product recommendations.

Solo ads have been a kind of mixed bag. Any ideas on platforms where I can find good solo ad sellers in the weight loss niche? Have been thinking of trying FB, though I believe it is really expensive right now, per click cost much higher than with solos. Of course, have to test to see if the results are better, bottom line is to build targetted and responsive subscriber list.

Email marketing is actually a direct marketing in which message is converted to group of people via Electronic mail. To do, follow the steps.
    1. Consolidate the Names and build up a list.
2.Develop Email Campaign and prepare Emails.
3.Write and send it to the chosen recipients.
    4. Process Opt-outs and process bounced emails.
    5. Repeat the process.
