Segmenting Buyers From Prospects... Good Idea... Right?

I'm segmenting buyers from prospects.... I was told all i have to do was go to list options n make an automation rule. I created a buyer list and everything. Now is that all that needs to be done? Aweber will automatically add those people to the buyer list? How do they know someone bought? From the tracking link in your email?

If I'm not mistaken aweber would "know" that the buyer bought when they
sign up on your "thank you page" as a customer. Then you can set up
your autoresponderso that they would be removed from the prospect
list to the customer list. So they actually sign up as a customer, but
you set it up so that they are automatically removed from the prospect
    list.

So, for example, I have prospects who sign up for an autoresponder
series, but when that person makes a purchase they are automatically
removed from the prospect email list so that they don't receive any more
    emails from that series.

It won't work, because you don't have access to the product so, you can't capture the leads unless you would strike some sort of a deal with the product creator.

When someone buys depending on the shopping cart you can tell them to add people to a certain list. Another thing people do is redirect them to a squeeze page where they have to optin to get access to the course or product.
