How to clean an old email list (and not get banned from email marketing service)...

Hi all,

I have several old double opt in email lists that from Aweber. The lists are up near 100,000 people.

I am getting back into the niche that I originally got all these subscribers from (note: these are my lists ...not some garage lists I bought or anything like that)...

...however, the lists are old an I know I will get many spam complaints, abuse reports
and "no permission" unsubscribes because many people will forget who I am.

Now I already know how to email these lists to try and get them back engaged ...and to encourage all of those that don't want to be on the list to unsubscribe ...but still, I know many will submit spam complaints, abuse reports and "no permission" unsubscribes ...which will get me banned from places like Aweber/Get Response.

I originally, was just going to upload my lists to a major email marketing service and send out a couple re-engagement type emails then get rid of all the bounces, complaints, and unsubscribes ...however, that won't work because there will be too many complaints most likely and I will get banned from places like Aweber/Get Response like I said...

So how would you recommend I clean this list? So I can use it? There are a lot of very high quality subscribers on it and I don't want to lose them ...but I also want to get rid of those that don't want to be on the list...

I'd ideally like to clean the list then use the cleaned list within Aweber or Get Response or another major email marketing service.

Thanks for your recommendations!

I can't help to much on that situation, but you should email a few and wait for a while for results. If it good, slowly move them to new auto responder. Then work with the next batch. You have to patience with that; 100000 is a big list(well to me it is ). This is better because emailing all 100000 at one time will destroy your subscription(if bad), but mailing a few at a time and testing will give better result and safer.

You could do a "Welcome back" email explaining you (the business) had neglected the list, ask some questions, then offer the "unsubscribe" link right away to let people leave who don't want to be on the list.

To increase awareness, trust and connection with your list you could try:

Send a survey asking about your list and what they want. Explain it is a way for you to "reconnect" with your list.

Offer a prize or incentive to complete the survey.

Explain the list is not a SPAM list and if they are receiving the email, it is because they asked for it. If they no longer want your emails then --> UNSUBSCRIBE <-- link

Offer a "freebie" download as a Thank You gift to everyone still on your list and opening emails.

Ask them to "reply" to the email and let you know they are still alive. If you get replies to autoresponder emails it really boosts your deliverability and keeps emails out of the SPAM folder.

Search this forum for other threads on reviving a neglected list.

Always let users know when and where they signed up and give them an option to unsubscribe.

Start off by building the trust of your email list slowly at first.

remove bounce emails ( abandoned emails ) from your list... major ESPs check for email delivery ratio, Like bounce and complaints... So it its higher than 4-5% then they may block you,,.. So simple advise to keep your list clean and be sure you dont get bounce more than 4%....
