30 Day Challenge - Make Money on a Shoestring Budget (starts 7/1/16)
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Have you heard the saying that it takes a lot of money to make money?

It's not true.

The purpose of this thread will be twofold.

The first part is that I want it to be a challenge - I want people to take the challenge of making money without having to put a lot of money out first. I want for people to sign up for this challenge and then post their progress.

The second part is I am going to let you look over my shoulder while I start a brand-new project and make money without investing much money first. (The limit to invest for this challenge is $50.)

I encourage people to ask questions along the way. I plan on asking questions of anybody that posts in this thread. Please don't ask questions via PM. Please post them so everyone can learn from them.

I don't really want to put a dollar amount on the amount of money that should be earned at the end of 30 days. My theory is that if any money is made it's a good start.

These projects are going to be projects that don't require a whole lot of maintenance to them. They won't be auto pilot, but they won't be high maintenance either.

I would like to run a new challenge every 30 days. If you follow through with each challenge, by the end of 6 months you should have 6 projects earning you money.

To get started, just post in this thread with "I accept the challenge!"

On the first day of the challenge, I'll post more about the rules and guidelines.

=====
I'll be editing to add resources as the challenge goes on.

I'll post the first challenge post either late tomorrow night (the 30th) or sometime on the 1st.

(Probably late tomorrow.)

Re: 30 Day Challenge - Make Money on a Shoestring Budget (starts 7/1/16)
Share on:

The challenge starts tomorrow. I will be posting about what I did tomorrow night.

Here is the gist of what my project is going to look like:

Days 1-14

I'm going to work on getting new content put on my site. I'll also get a product ready for sale.

The product will be a niche service, not in the IM/MMO niche. It's a new niche site for an existing service I offer.

Days 15-30

I will be working on getting traffic to the new site, people on my list, and conversions.

I'll also add to the content on the site enter the auto-responder messages.

Guidelines

For this challenge, you should try not to spend any money, but if you need to spend something, keep it under $50.

Use what you already have: an existing WSO, PLR, hosting, old domains, etc.

You also need to be able to have money in your account within 30 days. This means that you could choose a product that gives immediate commissions if you wanted to do something as an affiliate instead of creating your own product. This would not mean you could do something such as an Amazon affiliate, because you won't get paid within 30 days.

I am also hoping that people will give their own suggestions and examples as we go through the challenge.

Resources

As I go to through challenge, I will be posting resources and alternate ideas for people who are following along. For example, I plan on creating a product. Some people may not be comfortable doing that, so I will give alternative suggestions for people as to what they can use for products.

I think this is going to be a fun challenge and one that everybody can learn from.

This should be enough for you to get started. Post about what you want to do for your project and your game plan.

Post any questions you have in the thread.

My next update will be late(ish) tomorrow.

Be sure to post your progress.

Day 1:

Today I created a new logo for the niche site. I have the domain name and hosting.

I started setting up the niche site. Over the weekend I'll add more graphics and content.

Had graphics made for my product already, and ready to package it!

I'm in the music producer niche and I'm putting a package of beats (trap instrumentals) together.

Something to think about:

For this challenge, you have 5 Rest Days.

All work and no play makes for a tired, burnt out, grumpy Warrior.

Take your 5 days anytime you like during the challenge.

Day 2:

Today (so far) I worked on content for my site and the landing page.

Looks like I'll have a different starting point. Oh well. I've done a little bit of writing for a freelancing site; but nothing substantial. I don't have a business idea yet either, so I'm really starting from scratch! Getting an idea together is going to be the focus of Day 1 for me.

This is incredibly cool? I have an online product I released in February that hasn't had a single sale. I had no list to send to (nor did I have any internet sales experience. I thought it was a good product, learned how to put a website together, and then launched. It was hard work, especially the content, and I had to use whatever free tools I had on my laptop.)

I just started working on my second course. First thing I have done was create a couple of landing pages. I haven't done content at all. This challenge seems like a good way to stay focused on the task, as well as gives me a blueprint to launch, which I lacked with my first product.

Directly from my website, with Paypal payment links. I created a good sales page for another package already, so it will only be a clone page and modify the content accordingly!

Feel free to let us help you brainstorm. What kinds of things are you looking into doing?

Young Adult Improvement is as far as I've gotten so far. I'm about to start school in the fall (Finance), so I'm thinking of how to work that in as well.

Day 3

Today I had the new niche service site go live.

Tomorrow is probably going to be a rest day, unless I feel like working in the evening.

Total spent so far: $10 for a domain. (I already had hosting.

I designed the logo for the site for free with Canva.com.

Since the site took a lot less time than I thought it would, I will be spending the rest of the challenge days getting traffic for the site and trying to get a client for this new service.

Day 2: I've got an outline of an idea; but no way to fund the idea (and certainly no way to make money in the next 30 days).

Looks like it will be services for me to start, and profits from that will fund my larger plan.

Nothing wrong with that. Providing a service can be a great way to fund future projects.

my starting point was a little different, too, but I'll try to get in sync. Today is my day 3. I've already set up hosting, obtained 3 domains (using 2 of them), installed wordpress, created squeeze pages, with two different lead magnets. Next steps is to move from mailchimp (which I had from before) to probably getresponse, and create an automated campaign (hopefully tomorrow), and then work on a webinar (hopefully Wednesday/Thursday).

Very cool!

I use Getresponse. I love them.

(I need to add that as a resource in the first post - thanks for reminding me! )

Day 5: I wrote a 350 Word Article my niche site. I should have like 5 more published within the next 8 days despite it's something I am entirely new to.

Day 5

Now that I have my site set up, I want to focus on two things:

1. Building a list
2. Qualified Traffic

Here are a few resources to help you with traffic:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ffic-tips.html

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...trategies.html

I actually got my site done a lot faster than I thought I would. LOL This means I have more time in the challenge for traffic and conversions.

My niche is more "offline," I suppose. I'm targeting business owners in a very narrow niche.

I'll be using online and offline methods to drive traffic to my site.

Today I am sitting down and mapping out my strategy for reaching my target market.

Day 5

I've come to realize that my reality is that I'm in no position to actually create/run a long-term business. I'm not financially stable and don't really have a thought out idea. So I'm going to have to play this a bit smarter. Until I can figure out the kind of business that I want to run, I'm just going to focus on becoming financially stable through work (while creating startup funds through this challenge).

My priorities for the rest of the challenge can be put into 2 groups:

1. Get A New Job

I left a minimum wage job a few months ago to give writing a shot. Things haven't gone as well as I'd hoped. It is time to rejoin the work force and be smart about this whole deal. My goal is to find something, anything that gets me working above minimum wage. If I can cover my living expenses with offline stuff, then everything I make online can be reinvested into my business.

2. Get Freelance Writing Off The Ground

This will be what a lot of my focus is on for the next 25 days.

I have an old account at INeedArticles, run by a guy named Jon Ledger. I can get some immediate income going from there if I put my mind to it. He also just started an article marketplace where you can post and price your own stuff. I'll use that for practice and more money.

I need a more realistic writing venture though, and I know now that I'll have to create that myself. The tasks I think I'll need to complete are:

-Create some sample work (I think I'll flesh out this idea from another thread).
-Shore up a LinkedIn profile
-Get some advertisements out there (I'm thinking LinkedIn, Cragslist, and here to start).
-Setup a website: domain, hosting, theme, pages.
-Create the systems for my business. By this I mean the process for me and the clients.
-Extend my portfolio: a blog on the website and some reverse engineering of products and marketing seem like a good idea to me.
-Create a long-term advertising plan.

My Schedule

This schedule will just be for the next 25 days. Hopefully I can drop some of the other writing ventures for client based work in the near future.

3 hours per day job hunting
3 hours per day for freelance writing preparation (tasks listed above)
All other time on INeedArticles

I don't have anything else going on right now, so I can be liberal with the amount of time I give.

Tracking

These are some things I've decided to keep track of here until the end of the challenge

$ Earned (daily): Money that is going to be paid to me. I've earned it.
$ Potential (ongoing/rolling): Money that could be earned if Marketplace articles sell.
Freelance Tasks Complete (daily): For the website.
Job Hunt Tasks Complete (daily): For my livelihood.
Total $ Earned (ongoing): Yep.
Total $ Spent (ongoing): Yep.

I'm happy to have a bit of structure now going forward. The first couple of days of this have been disheartening. I've got 25 days left to work with. It's go time!

@gotthrowaway

Thank you so much for your post. I wanted to go through it and give some advice.

1. Yes, getting a job should be your priority. Once you have a job, you can work a biz on the side and build your online empire. But it's really hard to do anything if you're worried about your lights or Internet getting shut off. (Or being kicked out of your home.)

2. I like your writing plan, but don't overlook local businesses. (Not sure of where you live.) Business owners are more likely to pay you well and give more substantial projects. (You can't make a living writing $5 articles.)

If you need help, PM me and we can set up a quick Skype call for brainstorming.

PS - I used a Blogger blog to get my first writing gig, so don't overthink the prep steps, k?

I was thinking of targeting local with the LinkedIn profile/Craigslist. I'm in a relatively big city and can think of a few types of locals that I can hone in on.

I'm not planning on taking the challenge right now, but I do love this thread! Lots of good information and resources, and I'll keep checking back.

(I'll follow this format when I do decide on what I want to work on for my first MMO project. )

Yesterday was my Day 4: I had a logo and other artwork created ($90 off of fiverr. I should have set an investment limit, but that ship has sailed). I also signed up for the trial of GetResponse. (I didn't like MailChimp, but GetResponse isn't as intuitive as I thought it would be. This 30 day trial is actually pretty necessary - I assume with any autoresponder system).

Today is my Day 5. I'll hopefully create another lead magnet or two, as well as create a skeleton of a webinar I want to put on in a couple of weeks. Fortunately, I'm part of a couple of forums in my industry, so I'll send out an email asking people to join my list and go from there.

Rest Day 2

Taking another rest day. Trying to recover from the weekend still, sort of. (It was busy!)

Day 6

$ Earned (daily): $0

$ Potential (ongoing/rolling): $27.20

Freelance Tasks Complete (daily): Today I took the GoT/IM crossover idea and mind mapped some content for it. I either have a one-off lead magnet or a series of articles on my hands. Either way, I think it'll be a good starting portfolio once I'm finished.

Job Hunt Tasks Complete (daily): I don't have an up to date resume, so I spent some time today working on that. It isn't perfect yet; but I'll get it where I like it soon enough.

Total $ Earned (ongoing): $0

Total $ Spent (ongoing): $0

I'm not saying the beta release of Pokemon GO hindered my productivity today, but yeah.

You are forgiven.

It sounds like you are getting some momentum!

I actually did do something today - I reached out top a potential client. *crosses fingers*
(But that was all I did today, so I'm still counting it as a Rest Day.)

I have a question. I woke up this morning and my site is down/was hacked. I'm trying to get it restored (especially because I sent out an email to people in my niche to check it out and sign up - what I received were emails to my private inbox telling me that my site doesn't work). What do people do for security/post-hack help?

Maybe you can post in the Offline forum and ask? I know a lot of the guys there work with websites and stuff.

Robscom had good advice. You need to find someone who can do a thorough cleanup of your site and secure it.

If you need a referral, let me know and I can find someone.

Day 7

You need a few components for an online biz:

1. A product or service
2. A way to display it (website/blog)
3. Getting it in front of qualified people.
4. Converting looky-loos to clients/customers.

Yes, you need a mailing list and other components for a long-term biz, but we are talking just the basics.

My niche site is offering a service. So I need to find qualified biz owners to show it to.

I am choosing to do three things:

1. Approach individual biz owners and pitching my service.
2. Sending press releases to the local media.
3. Reaching out to people who are centers of influence in my chosen niche.

This isn't either/or. It's "all of the above."

For the rest of the challenge, each day I will do at least 2 of those things (except for Rest Days).

You can choose to do a variety of things to get traffic to your site. (See the OP where I list traffic generating resources.)

For what I offer, I don't need masses of traffic. I only need 2 clients a month. (Or less, really.)

Hi, ShayRockhold. I'm curious. Would you be interested in sharing your niche target? Interestingly, I listened to a podcast today from Internet Business Mastery about someone who created an affiliate program and targeted brick-and-mortar shops, so sounds little comparable.

Today was my Day 6. I think I got the break/hack of my website fixed. It hurt me a little because yesterday I had posted to this listserv I'm on inviting the members to check it out and sign up, and when I woke up this morning, I had received a few emails from members telling me that the site was down. Hopefully they'll go back and check it out. I also set up 3 days of autoresponders. Hopefully before I go to bed (I have to pack for a weekend trip to Salt Lake City) I will map out the details of a webinar I want to schedule.

Good! You can take some Rest Days this weekend.
