IM Beginner November Challenge
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

In the last couple weeks this thread has become pretty popular here on the forum.

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...al-estate.html

I know the thread has definitely motivated me to start something. With a new month approaching in a few days I want to start building my own virtual real estate.

I have read so much information here and on other blogs and forums and definitely suffer from analysis paralysis. I keep putting off and waiting and reading something that makes me change my path, but never actually start something and see it through to the finish. This seems to be something a lot of people have when it comes to internet marketing.

I am ready to actually start doing something and make it work.

I invite all people here that are like me or those in the thread above to join in this challenge. We can discuss here how we are doing and any tips or tricks we find along the way.

If you are a beginner like myself you may have something completely different you want to start than what I referenced in the thread above.

No matter what you want to accomplish in November join in and let's start doing something instead of sitting back and reading, waiting and watching.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

My goal is to get up at least 5 sites by the end of November. I have no idea what the sites will be yet as the toughest part is going to be doing the research to find what to target.

What's your goal for November?

I'm in! My goal for November is to pick one WSO, and complete every step, then analyze the results. I have a handful of websites that I have never kept up with or made anything out of because I didn't know what I was doing. Had no idea about keyword research, SEO, etc.

I actually just picked up my first WSO last night and implemented it today so I jumped the gun a couple days early for your November Challenge lol but I'll still count it. I will spend all of November on this particular WSO. Whether it works or not, I am sure I will have learned quite a few things.

Great idea for a thread for us newbies!

I will contribute to this thread, though, doesn't it seem like it should be an October challenge?

Anyhow, I am trying out different methods to see what I like in IM. I launched a 150+ product affiliate site this week and I would like to take a stab at some MFA VRE type stuff, so I will commit to launching 10 MFA type sites in October and report back with my findings.

I haven't really spent much time looking at the WSO's. Definitely will like to hear how yours goes and if it was worth it. Even though I think most probably are worth it if you just take the time and actually execute on them.

Good luck with it.

There are only 3 days left in October. That is why I made it a November challenge. Gives people a few days to read the thread and think about what they want to do in November.

Congrats on the launch of your product affiliate site. Any traction on it yet?

I will totally take part in this as well. This is a cool idea, and I'm completely new to this too.

My goal for November will be: make $100 profit by the end of the month. Not a lofty goal, but I want to prove to myself that this is possible.

Me myself I am doing pretty good, able to make about 400-500$ a week with a free method that will not last forever. My goal for November is by the end to be making 100$ a day with POF Dating ads, which is something ive been getting started in but need to put alot more time and effort into. Having that stable income would really get my business going good.

$100 is not bad at all starting out. Hell, anything above 0 is progress in my book. Have to start somewhere. Good luck though.

Do you have any strategy in place that will get you this result?

Most of us could only hope to reach that money level. I will get there though. One day.

I would imagine dating ads are pretty damn competitive. Either way great to hear you doing so well already. Good luck to hitting your goal.

You have a strategy in place to hit that level?

I too suffer from reading post after post and not actually doing anything. While I have a few sites here and there, they do not have a tight focus.

I will also be shooting for 5 sites in Nov. I have one now that I'm finishing up and plan to launch and optimize one a week. If all goes well, I will be pushing for two a week in Jan.

After that I should have enough capital to start outsourcing.

My ultimate goal is 100 sites by the end of 2011. Hopefully earning a min of $1 a day each.

I will be using a similar method as LMC, but modifying it to incorporate different selling techniques I've picked up along the way.

It will be fun to follow some others in this thread.

Yeah, I am not going the outsourcing route yet either. Until I do a bunch of the sites on my own and see how it all works and what works for me I won't be outsourcing. I would just be throwing money away if I outsourced right out of the gate.

I am modifying LMC's way a little as well. It is pretty difficult to find exact match domains these days, so I am going to try some sites with a little modification to that and see how they work.

I have found two exact match domains already. I need to do a little more research to see if they are viable, but I am pretty sure I will be starting with those.

Look forward to hearing how it goes.

Re: IM Beginner November Challenge

So, slow day at the day job which was awesome cause i was able to do keyword research all day. Came up with 8 good keywords, mostly in the medical area, though tightly focused. Interesting to mention exact match domains - I couldn't find too many either, and in some cases, the exact match domains were taken but had almost no relevancy.

I am interested to hear how people do copying LMC's method. I think creating super targeted affiliate sites can either be very good, or very bad and a lot will depend on the marketing factors on page to convert traffic. I myself have 3 affiliate sites - 1 review blog where I do the reviews and it has a personal tone with the readers, 1 review blog where others are encouraged to post reviews (doing terrible), and one affiliate site that is basically a wordpress turned into a store for a specific product category.

For these 10 sites I want to launch in november I am going to focus on heavy adsense and very light affiliate product promotion.

Hope everyone else is psyched and moving on their own goals!

Great to hear you found some good keywords. That is most of the battle. Now it is just a matter of executing them and getting out content.

Here is my tip of the day for the exact match domain issue most people have. If the keyword you want to target is taken then search for an even longer tail keyword that has your keyword in it. Here is an example:

Let's say you are trying to target: "dog training videos"
You find out that is taken, but you do more research and see that the phrase "best dog training videos" gets traffic and the domain is available. Now you can target for "best dog training videos", but you will still be able to target your original, "dog training videos".

This should help finding domains a little easier. Still requires research time though.

Not off to a great start. I spent about 8 hours looking up keywords/domains and only managed to register one. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong at this point, most keywords I look at look like they'll be too difficult to break into google rankings. This is frustrating to say the least.

edit: Well, I registered a second domain. I think I'll start building these two sites up for now, and maybe grab a few more domains in the next week.

It definitely can take some time finding that perfect domain, but when you do it is all worth it. The more we do the research and see trends and optimize how we do things the faster it will get.

Just think if you stick to your plan by the end of November when you compare research times to right now I bet you will see a considerable difference.

At least you have 2 domains to start building out. That is better than not doing any at all.

Count me in!

Started my first three sites during October and just registered another domain.

Here are my goals for November:

Site 1: Currently have pages ranked 2. 3, 4 and 5 for my main keyword. I am looking to get one of them as #1 during November. Also, I noticed I am ranked 13th for a keyword I implented by accident. This keyword has 135 000 searches a month, so I am going to try to hit top-5 during November.

Site 2: Currently ranked 9 for its main keyword. Looking to reach top-3 during November.

Site 3: Nowhere to be found but brand new. Looking to reach top 100 during November. Google gave me some incorrect numbers here. Only 30 000 hits during research but after getting the site up it turned out to be 100 000+

Site 4: About 60 000 hits on this one. Looking to reach first page before end of November. 66 000 searches a month, super relevant to product. I will be spending most time with this.

All ranks are checked with Scroogle Scraper,

Sounds like you have a good plan in place. That is awesome you already have sites on the first page of Google. Can only get better from there.

Do you have any revenue coming in from those first page results yet?

Welcome to the challenge WebDiva7. Glad to have you on board. Good luck with your goals.

I have seen a lot more people starting to use InfoBarrell for article submissions. I have it on my list of sites to check out. How do you like it?

I am very eager to join in but I have my placements coming up in college and MBA entrance exams in november so I cannot do much in november. But I intend to make an amazon site reviewing products and linking them to amazon.

The keywords have very little competition. The first site only competes against 3 000 sites or so.

I had one sale so far bringing me 10$. I am hoping that this site will get at least two sales a month for its main keyword. If I can rank well with the 135k+ keyword I think I should be able to sell more.

Second site climbed up the other day. Working on backlinks with that one atm. No sales yet.

Stick around and hopefully you will learn something here. I also hope to start this up each month. Should December be a better month for you?

That is great you have had one sale though. That should only grow as you start getting the other sites up in the rankings.

Count me in! Here is a little bit of back story:

I've started a couple of weeks ago and have been running a PPC and CPA campaigns. My goal for November is to earn $100.00 - $200.00 worth of profit off of PPC and CPA marketing plans. My plan of attack for this month is that I'm going to also attempt to incorporate SEO into my strategy and see how that works. Wish me luck!

Count me in.

I just got my first check from Google this morning and have only to send some w-9's and collect some other affiliate cash. Add that to the little bit I've gotten on my WSO (can't market SEO newbie guide to a forum full of seo experts ), so i want to see what I can do in November.

I have 3 concepts I'll be launching.

BTW: This is for educational/sharing purposes, not bragging rights, yes?

As far as I am concerned, this thread is for support. It isn't worth much if we don't share though :]

Definitely not bragging rights. I just started this thread to get people motivated and push each other and help each other any way we can.

Anything I have seen that involves bragging rights or prizes just turns ugly. We don't want that here. Life's to short for negative posts.

My goal for November is to build 3 websites.
To get those websites to the top of google for the main keywords I'm targeting.

These are my goals for November, I'll update this post at the end of November.
Good luck to everyone here with the goal(s) you have selected.

I'm In.

A little background...been reading and not actively doing IM for a few years now. Actually own appx 60 domains of varying degree of quality, usefulness, etc.

My goal for November is to build out 4 domains...1 per week. 1 hour per weekday. 5 hours per domain. After 1st one is done, I'll let it fester until end of month. While this could be about making quick Xmas cash, it's not, it's really about building a long term business.

Monetization on each will either be Adsense or Affiliate (CJ). Not both, we'll see as I build out.

I don't have any financial goals with this. It's about getting the SITES BUILT AND REPLICATING ACTIONS THAT BUILD TOWARD SUCCESS.

I would build more, but I'm also actively entering the "offline" niche. Have an appt next week with someone I'm "planning" on signing up to a $1k/month contract for services. Also, among my 60+ domains, are several local domains that I will continue to build out...and monetize (mostly rental...).

But, I want to do this challenge and built out a network of VRE that is separate from any local/offline stuff that I do.

It definitely is all about just getting sites built out and not worrying about them making money right away.

I think that is where most beginners struggle. They want to instantly start making $x a day or $x a month. If you focus on money right out of the gate you are going to get discouraged quickly and move on to another venture that promises quick money and the cycle goes on and on.

Okay, I'm definitely suffering from the "analysis paralysis." Frustration is definitely setting in.

I'm going to embarrass myself here, but the two domains I bought were because I mistakenly left "broad search" on the Google Keyword Tool. After properly looking over the keywords, I don't think there's much point in going after that niche right now.

I'm still spending hours and hours researching niches and key words but nothing really looks optimal or like something I could hit #1 in keywords with. Everything that looks like a good idea ends up having another IMer who has already taken advantage of it. I don't want to spend time on building a website and it ends up making no money. The ironic part is that in the time I've wasted I probably could have built 2-3 websites by now.

This is really frustrating because I know I could hammer out and promote a nice website if I could get over this first hurdle.

I'm still keeping my goal of $100 profit by the end of the month. I know it's not November yet, but my mini goal right now is to have a website underway by the end of today.

I'm in. I won't have a lot of free time in November, so my goals are modest:

Create one new affiliate (Amazon) site.
Populate it with 5+ good reviews.
Create enough backlinks to get it to page #1 of Google.

I also have one informational site (foreign language lessons) that I started a couple years ago, and it's quietly crept up to almost 50 very-long-tail searches a day. It gets nothing for the often-searched niche keywords, though, because I've done virtually zero link-building for it. So I also have a goal of creating 50+ backlinks for that site in November. I also just changed the ads on it from Adsense (which were rarely relevant) to some directly relevant products I picked out on Amazon.

I think I've found a pretty decent niche for my first affiliate attempt. I looked at a lot of them and was running into what Matt mentioned above: it seemed like every niche that has enough search traffic also has several affiliate sites as competition, some clearly following the blueprints suggested by experts here. I had better luck when I stopped thinking, "cool stuff lots of people want to buy," and started thinking, "unpleasant household stuff lots of people have to buy." There may not be more search traffic for the latter, but there seem to be fewer VRE competitors in those niches, probably because most IM-hopefuls look first to the cool stuff just like I did.

Also, I think when your search turns up several page-1 competitors, it's worth looking at them to see if they're really serious competition. A lot of sites get thrown together and never developed, and many sites are just plain crappy. If you're thinking of doing a 'sewing machine review' site, for instance, you'll find that a search for that on Google turns up several sites focusing on that exact niche. But if you look at them, some might be thin affiliate sites with barely readable or all duplicate content, some might have been created 4 years ago and stagnated since then, and some might be 80% ads. If those are the kind of sites that are rising to the top in a particular niche, it shouldn't be too hard to beat them to page #1. After all, something has to be on page #1, so the real question is how strong the sites there are.

Tools like Market Samurai can help determine that, but I think you can get a pretty good idea just browsing through the top 10 sites for yourself.

I'm in! I've already started 2 niche sites in the past week or so but I'm having a hard time with backlinks, how to generate em, etc. I write articles but I'm considering getting some article rewriter to get more articles (some sort of spinner but giving it various paragraph, sentence, etc different choices) so that my content is all unique! I still dont understand if I can publish it on different or same sites for backlinks or how that tends to work.

Welcome to the challenge gmoney38.

This is a great idea about the chat. I am putting something together right now for this. I will post back tomorrow with more information for this.

Shall be ready to start in the next day or two. Also thought that was a great idea about the chat. So Rizzy what would you consider being a good goal for November?

Re: IM Beginner November Challenge

So after a weekend of work I got 1 MFA site up on one domain. A lot slower than I would have liked but I think now that I have a template and system that I like this will go quicker. Aside from writing content that is. That is always tedious.

A couple of key takeaways -

1. I am going to stay away from wordpress cloning tools. Even the good tools (like the one I paid $27 for today) require you to create a database, import files, edit sql files and so forth - still a lot of manual work. I am of the opinion that, if I get one sandbox wordpress site set up the way I like it, I can actually just copy the heatmap theme settings and add my 5 core plugins in roughly the same time I can upload and set up a wordpress clone.

2. A lot of the BEST keywords I am finding have MFA type sites (all variations of xfactor) ranked as number one. One part of me wants to stay away because clearly, someone is aware of the niche and probably ready to fight for it but the other part of me feels like a slightly better and more optimized MFA site can easily take down a less optimized MFA site with 7 backlinks.

@mattward - I usually find 2 really choice micro niches - pr0-3, each page having 0-30 backlinks - per every 800 keywords I look up. The only way I am able to do this is by using Market Samurai to help with the SEO competition details and to get an overall picture of the searches per day and competing sites.

Hope everyone had a great halloween!

All ranks are checked with Scroogle Scraper,
Update:

Not much have happened, but a little,..

Site #1: Still ranked #2. I did some research on the site that is topping the search results. It has a total of 1 000 backlinks compared to my 240. I whop the site when it comes to on-page SEO for the keyword though, so I am hoping that if I keep building links I will eventually beat it.

Regarding the 135 000 searches keyword, I am still ranked #13. I would expect to see a little traffic from this one, but nothing so far.

Site #2: Building backlinks. About 20 a day now and adding a little content every day.

Site #3: Haven't put time into building backlinks. Will start today. Adding content daily.

Site #4: Managed to set up WordPress. Will start working on it once I am done with this post.

I have been thinking a bit about ads. I currently have Bidvertiser set up on all sites, showing two banners a page. My clickthrough rate is horrific, something like 0.2%. What are your experiences with this?

No more sales. But I am convinced I will have at least one this week.

Best regards

I think this is a cool thread to have.

I would participate, but I am far from a beginner and don't think it would be too fair.

I do like that you guys are getting together and encouraging each other. I believe that by participating in a program like this and sharing your results with others, that you will end up more motivated to accomplish your goals. It can sometimes be hard to stay motivated when you work at home, so having a group of peers to be involved with like this can be an excellent support group. You continue to strive harder each day because you want to be successful and you won't be the only one that knows about it if you don't.

I wish you all the best of luck in your November challenge.

Anyone want to try my idea for their November challenge? Take a look at my free ebook in my signature and build the website it teaches you to make. I made a site that had over 1000 unique Google visitors in it's very first week. I challenge you to do it in a month and I'll even tell you exactly how I did it .

We're all a beginner at something. I have a new video method I want to try out.

My initial goal will be to get 100 videos up this month. Maybe if I hit that quick enough I'll move the goal to 200 or even 300. Would like 1000 up by Christmas but not sure if that will happen!

It is all about just actually doing something to get out of the analysis paralysis syndrome. Everyone will have different goals. The common goal for everyone though is taking action and actually start learning by doing.

That is great you got a site up already though. I can see you have already learned a lot just by doing the one site. If you keep on that pace by the end of the month you should be way above where you are now.

Yes, this thread definitely should not be all for beginners. Everyone has something to learn. It is really just about setting a goal and taking action.

Great thread Idea. Maybe it will stop me from Jumping to the next "shiny" idea this month

My plan is to build backlinks to my 4 websites I am getting some search traffic but the main problem was my keyword research is awful so I will see if I can salvage them after this month.

I will also try to improve on my keyword research skills and come up with a new niche by the middle of the month sometime.

So this month is backlink, backlink, backlink and at least one new niche with at least 10 good keywords.

I did a teeny bit of work yesterday and got 5 clicks on my affiliate links. I know that's barely anything, but I'm just happy that the potential is there that I could have sold something and with barely any effort put in...

Today my goal is to write 10 full, quality articles.
