Re: My Personal Challenge - Make $1500 by December 1st Via ClickBank and Article Syndication

Today was a good day for sales...5 sales of product #1 for a commission of $89.90 today which brings my grand total to $1883.73...and I now have 83 subscribers on my buyers' list...

Today's stats:

- 1st website = 19 visitors to my site

- 2nd website = 1 visitor to my site

- 3rd website = 3 visitors to my site

- 4th website = 4 visitors to my site

- 5th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 6th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 7th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 8th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 9th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 10th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 11th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 12th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 13th website = 139 visitors to my site

- 14th website = 12 visitors to my site

- 15th website = 64 visitors to my site

- 16th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 17th website = 48 visitors to my site

And of the 305 visitors to my site today 32 subscribed...

As for what I accomplished...I created 3 new messages for both autoresponder series...answered emails from site visitors/subscribers (there were just a couple)...sent out emails to website owners I've contacted in the past...and read emails from website owners who replied to my emails and all of them with the exception of 1 were to turn down my request of syndicating my articles...

The 1 exception was 1 of the 2 subscribers who are on my list that used their site email address to subscribe to my "freebie list" that I contacted yesterday...the other site owner hasn't responded yet...

And the 1 that responded was the 1 with the large website that covered a multitude of topics geared toward women...

I batted emails back and forth with her and I learned that her site gets quite a bit of traffic...and she was proud to say that quite a bit of that traffic is repeat traffic that visits her site quite often...

Also, from what I could tell her site is predominantly monetized by "sponsored ads"...and they pay pretty good money to have ads on her site...so I hope that's a good indication that her site's traffic is valuable and hopefully it will be valuable to me...

Anyway, she basically said in her emails to me that she is ALWAYS on the hunt for good content to use on her site and that she really liked my articles...so much so that she wants to use 9 of my 12 articles...

Moreover, she admitted that the reason why she opted into my list in the first place is that she had read a few of my articles on another website (1 of my publishers obviously) and was curious about the content I had in my autoresponder series...

She did it with the intention of wanting to get ideas for content for her own site for herself and writers that she uses for her site which is fine by me as long as gets "inspiration" from my work and she doesn't copy my work...

She definitely takes a lot of pride in her site...

We also chatted about affiliate marketing and other ways to monetize sites since she noticed that I was promoting a CB product in my autoresponder series...

She mentioned that she had tried monetizing her site using Amazon, CB, and other affiliate networks but that she really never had success with it and that she's now having pretty good success with selling ads on her site...not huge money but pretty good money (she didn't give a dollar amount and I didn't ask since it's really none of my business)...

Anyway, she posts new content to her site on a daily basis...anywhere from 1-3 new articles per day...she will post 1 of my 9 articles she's interested in on her site starting tomorrow and 1 per day thereafter until she uses them all...

Good job on your goal.

That's great that you've used subscriber domain emails to help generate more leads/traffic. I check my subscriber domain emails about once a week, you never know who'll sign up.

Nice job on the lastest 5 sales!

Another quick question for you. From reading through this thread and you previous one, I see that it looks like you offer your list a "freebie" if they purchase product #1.

Are you just saying in your review of product #1, If you purchase product #1 through my link, I'll give you such and such "freebie report"? Then if they send you their recipe from CB you email them the report and manually add them to your buyers list?

Glad you are still keeping this thread going even though you've hit your goal. Maybe it is time to set another goal?

-Tom

I have to thank you for giving me the idea/bringing it to my attention...I NEVER would've thought to do that on my own!

Yep...I just mention that if they buy product #1 that they can sign up to get the "bonus report" and other premium/special information on a regular basis...the bonus report really is just kind of mentioned as kind of an afterthought and not a hard sell/push to get the bonus report after purchasing product #1...

And believe it or not I don't manually send the bonus report...so actually a person could enter in a fake receipt # and their email address and they would get the bonus report lol...:p

The reason why I did it this way is because after reading fellow warrior MYOB's experience with doing it that way and how rare it is for someone to get on his buyer's list who hasn't purchased the product he promoted I figured my experience would be similar and it has been...no 1 is on my buyers' list who shouldn't be...

In the beginning I was checking to see if it would be an issue and it hasn't been...and worst case scenario I can either remove the subscriber off the buyer's list if I do discover they've entered a fake receipt # or I can leave them on the list in the hopes that they buy product #2 (it's unlikely they'll buy product #2 since they wouldn't buy product #1 so more than likely I would just remove them from the buyer's list)...

Also, the other reason why I chose to do it this way is because I really don't want to get in the habit of manually having to deliver bonuses to subscribers on future lists in future niches I may be in...

Anyway, your post reminds me that I can remedy this by getting CB List Automator...it supposedly is a program I can install on my website in conjunction with Aweber to automate the process of verifying whether receipt #s are legit and once it determines that it automatically delivers the bonus to that person...

I've been meaning to email the vendor of CB List Automator to ask him if he still supports the product...no sense in buying something that either isn't available anymore or will have issues that I can't get help with...

Hey Brian thanks for the 1st tip! I didn't think to ask for a higher payout...I probably won't get it...if I remember correctly I don't think that vendors on CB can give more than 75% of a sale to an affiliate...correct me if I'm wrong about that though...

Plus I think I would feel bad about asking for a higher payout from this guy because:

1. He has NO backend...he's not a marketer at all...so he's not making a whole lot on each sale...

2. He was kind of enough to give me his CB product for free so I could review it before promoting it...

3. He was so helpful with answering my questions and I know that he answers the questions of my subscribers who have purchased through my affiliate link...

So to sum it up...in the future I'll definitely be following your advice on asking for a higher payout if I'm doing well with a vendor's product but in this case even if he offered a higher payout I don't think I'd have the heart to accept...

As far as outsourcing product creation...for now that's not in the cards for me...I'm not certain if it will be anytime soon...I've just never been all that comfortable with product creation and the headaches/challenges of being a vendor...although I do realize there's BIG money in being a vendor...probably more so than being an affiliate...

But for now I'll just stick to being an affiliate...

And as far as webinars go...my gut feeling tells me that it would be a turn off for my subscribers BUT it's probably worth testing in the future to see if it improves conversion (or hurts it)...

Thanks for all the suggestions Brian...I definitely wouldn't have thought of the asking for a higher payout.

The way Alexa collects data about sites is that a person has to have the Alexa toolbar downloaded to their web browser...so if a site visitor doesn't have the toolbar downloaded to their web browser then that visitor won't be counted...

Although I don't even think it matters if the person has the toolbar downloaded or not it's still wildly inaccurate...

Back when I actually believed Alexa's data was gold and when I was into creating multiple sites monetized with Adsense (truth be told they were MFAs sites) I started noticing how off Alexa's data was...

At the time I had about a dozen MFA sites (not a large sample I know) and the sites that were getting virtually no traffic according to Alexa they were getting more traffic than my MFA sites that were getting 50+ visitors per day...

That and if you go through the many threads on the WF about Alexa you'll notice a lot of people complaining about the same thing...the people who still pay attention to data from Alexa usually are either new to IM or people who are selling something and using the data from Alexa to make what they're selling "look good"...

Or if they don't fall into those 2 categories they really just don't know any better I guess...:p

As for SEMrush I pretty much encountered the same issue with their data as well...although I'm not certain how they "supposedly" collect their data...I don't know if it's a toolbar they use or what...

The only way to truly have accurate knowledge about a site's traffic is to look at their traffic logs or whatever analytics tool/software they're using...and the only way to get access to that information is if you had direct access to it or the site owner gave you access (login info, etc. to analytics and/or traffic logs)...

And even amongst analytics tools/software some are more accurate than others...but I'd stack the vast majority of those analytics tools/software up against Alexa and SEMrush because those tools/software are installed directly on your website(s) and Alexa and SEMrush are just 3rd party sites with no direct access to the traffic on your site(s)...

I honestly don't know...I tried to get my opt-in to look like that and I didn't succeed...

My site compared to the example site is definitely not as attractive and polished...in fact my site is kind of on the ugly and slightly cluttered side...:p

But it's on my 'to-do list' to improve the "look" of my site...along with A LOT of others things I need to improve...

Obviously Alexa, SEMRush and similar tools can only help you have an "idea" of the stats of a site that is not yours (the only real way to know is accessing the analytics of the owner). It's just like TV audience measurement, where they rely on sampling to obtain estimated audience sizes.

IMHO, this doesn't make them useless, especially if you use them to compare medium to large sites and use more than one of these tools.

Because of this Alexa-is-useless debate, some people started to use other systems like counting the number of comments in a blog...

I really prefer a sampling based estimation than counting comments (there are some other curious "systems" out there), especially if you rely in more than one of these tools.

AND these tools give you other interesting information about keywords and related sites.

BTW, just a techie opinion (and an IM newbie).

The people who usually have the Alexa toolbar downloaded onto their web browsers are marketers...so unless you're in the IM/MMO market it's not even a good "sampling"...

Not to mention all you have to do is check out the many threads about the topic right here on the WF to know that there have been people who are getting hundreds of daily visitors to their site but Alexa shows that their site is getting virtually no traffic...:p

But again if you want to use the Alexa data that can be your prerogative...

I didn't say the site was "amateurish" I just meant that in my opinion it's a bit ugly and cluttered and that my site needs definite improvement...obviously my subscribers must not agree...either that or my content is good enough where they overlook it...

Janocolorado maybe I'm missing something here but in the beginning I thought that you were offering "constructive criticism" and genuinely wanted to help but now I can't help but get the feeling that maybe your intent is changing because we have a difference of opinion...

Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I don't get why you've been so adamant about me doing guest blogging and other things that aren't the focus of the challenge I set for myself...

I understand that other people are reading this thread and that maybe you're trying to offer them some alternatives to what I'm doing or you're trying to not have them "put all their eggs in 1 basket"...

And while I agree that there is some merit to NOT putting all someone's eggs in 1 basket I also think that there's some merit in focusing on 1 thing at a time...especially if the person hasn't experienced much success in the past...which in my case I've had extremely small and limited success in IM over the years til very recently...

Anyway, if I've got it all wrong I apologize but it's just that your "constructive criticism" seems to be more about "criticizing" than being "constructive"...

But again if I'm being overly sensitive I apologize...

Really? The problem is just a difference in hundreds of visitors?

If I have to decide between having no info or having several tools with a possible error
of +-1000, I'd prefer the tools... obviously, knowing I can't take the results exactly. (I know Alexa's data error can be bigger... just using your facts).

AND, as I said, I would always use more than one tool.

AND, as I said, these tools give extra info that can be very interesting to analyze competitors (related sites and keywords).

IMHO information (as long as you know how accurate it is) is far better than having no information (or counting comments).

My apologies as it seems all my comments bother you, so I'll step aside (it's your thread and your success).

My only reasons to comment on this thread are to give you my opinion even if it is different to yours and to try to show you there are people following you (not just your results).

As you say "there's some merit in focusing on 1 thing at a time" (indeed, there's more than "some" merit). I've just been commenting different alternatives to scale your success up (when I talked about outsourcing) and diversify (different ways to contact new publishers). You didn't share my opinions and that's ok.

IMHO, this is constructive criticism but english is not my mother language so my apologies for that.

As I said, I step aside.

Sincere congrats for your success and infinite thanks for sharing it with us!!!

Janocolorado my point about Alexa is that sometimes Alexa shows a site getting basically NO traffic when in fact that site is getting hundreds of daily visitors...so if I went by Alexa's data I would be passing on sites that really do get a lot of traffic...

Likewise, Alexa's data from time-to-time indicates that a site that's only really getting a trickle of traffic is getting more than it actually is...that's been my own personal experience with Alexa AND other warriors from what I've read...

So with that being said if I went by Alexa's data I could very well be passing on sites that would bring me a lot of traffic and pursuing sites that really get very little traffic...

However, I've "basically" said this in a roundabout way in other posts but...

My main point is that as long as a site that I want my content on wants to take my content I don't care if the site only gives me 2 daily visitors or 200 daily visitors (obviously I would prefer 200 but realistically that's not going to happen with most of the sites)...if I have enough sites providing me with 2 daily visitors that traffic can add up over time...

And although a site maybe providing me with 2 daily visitors now it doesn't mean that they can't build traffic to their site and in turn their site bring me more traffic in the future...

So today's site with little traffic could in the future be a site that's getting a lot of traffic and sending you a decent amount of that traffic...this is something that fellow warrior JohnMcCabe brought to my attention and he's definitely got a far better understanding of article syndication than I do...

Anyway, I think it's a bit simpler (maybe not easier but simpler) to just find sites that you want your content published on and ask them to publish your syndicated content...

As opposed to finding sites you're interested in, looking them up on Alexa (which we've already established is fairly inaccurate as it is) and then determining based on the site's "Alexa ranking" whether they're worth contacting...

And when I mentioned comments as a "good indicator" of the traffic that's on a site I meant it's just that...an "indicator"...me personally I don't care if there's NO comments on the site...if it's a site I want my content on I'm going to contact them...

I just mentioned the "comments scenario" because I've been asked by people how I know if a site has a "decent" amount of traffic or are worth contacting...sometimes a lot of comments is a good indication...but for myself it doesn't matter...but for other people maybe it does...

My apologies for being ultra sensitive about your posts...

IMHO information (as long as you know how accurate it is) is far better than having no information (or counting comments).

My apologies as it seems all my comments bother you, so I'll step aside (it's your thread and your success).

My apologies for feeling like you were being overly critical when you were really just trying to help...

And I actually don't remember saying that about my own site but obviously I did...really put my foot in my mouth on that 1...

Again sorry for getting offended when you were just trying to help...

Sometimes I really should just take a step back, calm down and not be so defensive when someone has a difference of opinion AND on top of that are genuinely trying to help...

So honestly I'm at fault for taking what you were posting as being "hypercritical" when it really wasn't...

Being "hypercritical" is not too bad, as long as it is constructive hypercriticism

It's ok.

LOL I'm sorry. I must have had a serious brain fart.

I was feeling a little offended because I was thinking of Alexa & SEMRush as "Alexa Smith & SEMRush (another WF member?)!

But thank you for the detailed response!

I apologize Brittany....

I made 3 sales of product #1 and 1 sale of product #2 today for a total of $121.43 in commissions and which pushes my grand total to $2005.16...I'm over the $2K mark! And I now have 86 subscribers on my buyers' list...

Today's stats:

- 1st website = 14 visitors to my site

- 2nd website = 0 visitors to my site

- 3rd website = 2 visitors to my site

- 4th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 5th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 6th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 7th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 8th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 9th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 10th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 11th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 12th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 13th website = 74 visitors to my site

- 14th website = 9 visitors to my site

- 15th website = 38 visitors to my site

- 16th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 17th website = 56 visitors to my site

- 18th website (1 of my subscribers that has a site) = 49 visitors to my site

And of the 256 visitors to my site today 28 subscribed...

As for what I did today...I basically took a break...I posted quite a bit to this thread today and I looked at A LOT of threads on the WF that were old and totally unrelated to what I'm currently doing...although the threads did inspire some interesting and creative ideas about what I'd like to do in the distant future to earn more...

I didn't get much sleep the night before and I just couldn't get myself to focus...hence my excuse for not doing anything today...

Tomorrow site #17 will publish the last of the 4 articles they were interested in...whereas the new site (site #18) published the 1st of 9 articles she was interested in...

Furthermore, the 2nd subscriber with a website got back to me today and they are interested in using 5 of my articles and will publish the 1st article starting Monday...they publish content to their site on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays so that's what the schedule of those 5 articles being published will be...

So today I gave myself a break...:p

Hmm. I'm not the perfect "non procrastinator" around but you seem ok with giving yourself a break. Although $121 is more than i would be qualified to earn in 2 days in a "job" i would still see it as a starting point. You have a system here, and its making money consistently. Instead of taking breaks why not try and double/triple your efforts daily, im sure you could if you really thought about it.

Im just saying, just because your earning a full time income, dont get lax! If you start getting lax its going to go away and you will ave to start over again! Looking at "patterns" i would say that your next step would be to get another article written and distributed for some more traffic. Its cool answering questions for us guys, but you have to think about your own income first. Dont sacrifice it answering questions for people who will probably never take your advice.

Have you thought any more about what part of the chores you could outsource?

Also if you could do me a favour.

Go to your article, copy a few sentences and stick it into google, and tell me who comes up first. Your site or someone that has published your article? Just curious

Yeah I have been pretty lax off and on for the past few weeks...but it's mostly due to being lazy...

I can't even use the excuse of being a "procrastinator" because I've started and this part of what I'm doing is a little bit easier than it was getting started and setting everything up...

Although I guess I'm procrastinating a little bit by not making some improvements to my site and autoresponder messages to improve conversion...but it's because I'm afraid if I make any changes that I'll lower my conversion OR somehow mess something up...

However, not to long ago I read a post from someone who basically stated that if you're afraid to make changes to your own website(s) that your in the wrong business and maybe IM isn't the right thing to pursue...that resonated with me...

So in the very near future I'm going to have to make some of those changes I'm afraid to make...

Anyway, I really haven't given any serious thought to outsourcing because for now I'm not doing it...I've done outsourcing in the past and believe me...it wasn't easy and you can burn through a decent chunk of change finding the right person or people...

On the other hand, if I ever do any outsourcing it would probably be for the content creation, i.e., the articles I would want to use for syndication and the additional content that would appear on my site...

And maybe I'd train a VA (need a decent chunk of change) to contact potential publishers in the manner that I would contact them (would probably need a lot of hand holding to do that in the beginning) and to maybe handle subscriber emails...

But I'd only have a VA if I were going into many different niches (that's the plan over an extended period of time) and I was really swamped/overwhelmed with work...

As far as who comes up first in Google for phrases in my article...for half of my articles the site(s) that have syndicated my article are above mine but for the other half my article shows up...

Although I think the more important question would be am I ranking well for any decent keyword phrases in my niche and without having to look the answer would be no...:p

I am starting to get between 1-3 daily visitors that have been referred by the search engines (mostly Yahoo and Bing...but occasionally Google)...but it's nothing to be overly excited about...

However, it is pretty amazing that I'm getting ANY traffic from the search engines being that my site isn't really optimized with SEO in mind at all...but I really consider search engine traffic as more of a bonus as opposed to something to strive for...

Anyway, I definitely need to take your advice of starting on another article and spending less time on the WF (even if it means putting off a few questions from people in this thread)...

But there probably is some truth in me using this thread as a way to procrastinate from getting work done...:p

I notice myself getting a bit restless with the 1 thing to focus on...so I am giving some serious thought to starting up another site in this niche right after this challenge is over December 1st...

Actually I've been thinking of starting up 3 (maybe 4) sites in the niche I'm currently in...each new site would be focusing/honing in on a specific demographic/segment of my current niche...

For example, if I were in the wedding planning market but my niche was something like 'ethnic wedding planning' I would create more sites under the 'ethnic wedding planning' to "niche it down" even further, i.e.:

- Jewish wedding planning
- Indian wedding planning
- Chinese wedding planning
- African wedding planning

I'm thinking of doing something along those lines in my current niche after December 1st...

But until then I'm going to focus on what I'm doing AND start to make some of the improvements that I wanted to make to my sites and autoresponder series...

My problem after December 1st will probably be balancing my time between my current sites and autoresponder series and setting up the same for the other site(s)...

Thanks for the well wishes, congrats and kick in the butt...

I was thinking in sending this through a PM, but I finally thought it could be useful to post it here. AND the latest posts may have messed up everything between us.

You've demonstrated (brilliantly) that article syndication is probably the best way (or at least one of the best) to start an IM business with a low budget.

You've already done the most difficult thing: you've created a money making machine.

I've read many times from successful marketeers about what the next steps should (or at least could) be:

1.- Tune your opt-in conversion rate and your sales funnel to squeeze the maximum from every visitor.
2.- Scale up your business.
3.- Diversify (maybe creating a new site in a different niche).

I know I have no authority as I am an IM newbie (what doesn't really mean I'm a newbie in everything else), but this is basically what I've been trying to say along this thread:

1.- TUNING/OPTIMIZING.

- When you had already reached a grand total of $445, I wrote my first post in this thread and talked about tuning your opt-in rates:

Originally Posted by janocolorado View Post

2.- SCALING UP.

- You have a steady 10% (more or less) opt-in conversion rate, which is good for content-rich sites, but almost everything can be improved. Imagine how many new subscribers (and buyers) if you could scale up your success, so I commented the possibility of reinvesting your benefits:

Don't you think it could be a good idea to reinvest an important part of your earnings in outsourcing your article writing (although you may also keep writing yourself). It will increase YOUR products in a short period of time.

Think of it as if it was an interest reinvestment in your stocks.

However, it's obviously YOUR business, and you know it better than anyone else.
3.- DIVERSIFICATION.

- In the "diversification branch" of this debate, I thought that before creating new sites, you could try to get new publishers that you couldn't get with your article syndication offer and talked about making a couple of guest posts in important sites of your niche:

Originally Posted by janocolorado View Post

and "offered" alternative solutions to the same problem:

You may want to try some different things (I promise I won't mention guest blogging... ups :p)
...

I also spoke about using some tools to decide whether a site is important enough to pay your efforts (or anyone else's) for guest posting (never talked about using them for article syndication), but the debate was finally messed up.

We obviously disagree in some points, but I hope this summary is useful to someone.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

I think you are an either black or white person (nothing wrong with that) and I'm more a gray guy so that's where our differences appear:

- You decided to forget about SE traffic because it converts worst than article syndication's (and maybe because of your past bad experience playing the Google's game). I really think you shouldn't refuse trying to get that free targeted traffic (even if it converts poorly). I admit that putting all the eggs in Google's basket isn't intelligent because you are an algorithm change away from losing everything... but why not putting any eggs at all? You've already been branding your site and creating quality content. Why not trying to make little SEO fixes to those articles and let Google, Bing and Yahoo play their game. It's not much of an extra effort from what you are already doing. You have nothing to lose as you really don't expect nothing from this.

- You are stuck into your article syndication adventure and have been really successful. You've left behind those webmasters who ask for unique content, even if they own an important site in your niche (or related to it). I proposed (and you clearly refused it) guest blogging for 1-3 top sites, but you may try something else: why not changing your speech when contacting them and try to make them see that quality content is far more important than unique content? Maybe this approach makes some of them change their point of view. Also, you could try becoming a "quality commentator" on their sites. What I mean is that even those "closed doors" (black or white) webmasters may have a slightly "opened door" (gray).

My apologies for such a long post.

Again, congrats for your success and sincere thanks for sharing your journey with us.

I'm not certain what you mean by structure but I'll do my best to explain...the articles that I use for syndication are on my sites as posts and the links in messages of my autoresponder series point to regular pages on my sites...

As for the opt-in...on the homepage is a large opt-in that's kind of like the first post...the following is an example of what I tried to make my opt-in look like on the homepage except without it being quite as large (didn't succeed though plus my site isn't nearly as attractive :p):

Create Hype - Marketing Tips for Creative Women Entrepreneurs

Likewise, I have another smaller, less prominent opt-in box in the site-wide sidebar so that every page a visitor is on that opt-in box is there...

However, all my syndicated articles have a resource box that points to the homepage of the site so that people who click the link in the resource box land on my homepage with the prominent opt-in...

Moreover, I don't have a sales page on my site...I'm an affiliate not a vendor that sales their own products...so I have a page that reviews the product I'm promoting and that 'review page' links out to the sales page of the product I'm promoting...

Thus as an affiliate I'm really just 'pre-selling' the product...I let the sales page of the product do the "real selling"...which might explain why my conversion rate is under 10% even though I'm doing email marketing...the sales page for the product isn't all that good...it's not terrible but the sales page could be better...

Also, I'm hoping to get my conversion rate from a "free subscriber" becoming a buyer closer to 20%...but I guess it depends on how long a subscriber has been on the list...

I've been told and read in a few places that if a subscriber hasn't made a purchase within 3 months of subscribing to a list that the chances of them buying greatly diminishes...don't know how true that is but it sounds fairly logical...
Thanks for the reply. You answered the questions perfectly and I appreciate it. The only thing I'm unclear on is whether you have links to the vendor's product page in your autoresponder series to subscribers or just links to your site pages? And/or do you have one email in the autoresponder series that is 'solely' a review/sales message for a product?

Thanks again!

You are doing great! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there like this.

Oh boy was today an interesting day...

I made 4 sales of product #1 and 1 sale of product #2 for a total of $139.41 in commissions today and which boosts my grand total to $2144.57...and I now have 90 subscribers on my buyers' list...

Today's stats:

- 1st website = 11 visitors to my site

- 2nd website = 0 visitors to my site

- 3rd website = 1 visitor to my site

- 4th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 5th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 6th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 7th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 8th website = 5 visitors to my site

- 9th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 10th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 11th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 12th website = 0 visitor to my site

- 13th website = 49 visitors to my site

- 14th website = 7 visitors to my site

- 15th website = 23 visitors to my site

- 16th website = 4 visitors to my site

- 17th website = 72 visitors to my site

- 18th website = 217 visitors to my site

And of the 397 visitors to my site today 41 subscribed...

As for what I accomplished today...I made some visual improvements to my sites (both the "freebie site" and the "buyers' list site"); the sites look a bit more plain but less cluttered (I changed the WP themes for both)...

I added 2 new messages to both autoresponder series...and I also looked through ALL the messages in both autoresponder series to see if I could make any changes that might help with conversion...honestly I didn't really think that most of the messages could be improved upon...

However, I did make a few minor changes to some messages...nothing major but I just worded the messages a bit differently for encouraging subscribers to look at my review for product #1...I worded it where it was a little bit more pushy/salesy...hopefully it improves conversion a little bit or at least doesn't hurt it...

But I've come to the conclusion that my conversion rate for sales may not be able to be vastly improved for a few reasons...

Information products don't typically get as good of a conversion as physical products; I'm promoting information products in a niche/market that is more accustomed to buying physical products; and the sales pages for these products aren't very good...they're decent but obviously not done by a professional copywriter...

So I might be getting as good of a sales conversion rate as I'm going to get for the reasons mentioned above AND the fact that I'm not a super experienced marketer myself...

Little by little and over an extended period of time I'll try making little changes to see if my opt-ins and sales conversions improve BUT as far as the opt-in is concerned I think I'm at the typical opt-in rate for a content-rich site...

Furthermore, some of my traffic sources aren't super targeted so my opt-in rate is actually pretty good taking that into consideration...and I didn't focus in on a very specific demographic to begin with...

Hence the reason why I want to create other sites in this niche because for each site I intend to target specific demographics rather than a large demographic of people like my current sites are doing...I know that when my marketing message is super targeted to specific people I'll probably have a better sales conversion rate...

Well the above is what I accomplished...wish I would've accomplished more but I took longer analyzing the messages in both my autoresponder series than I would've liked...

Anyway...the more eventful parts of my day...

Got a big boost of traffic from site #18 today...the reason for that is because the site owner used 1 of my articles that I consider a bit more provocative/controversial than my other articles...in fact this is the 1st time a site owner has used this particular article...

And it did stir things up a bit on the owner's site...quite a few interesting comments that were either in agreement and praising the article OR a few comments that were in total disagreement but they respectfully stated their case...although there was 1 comment that was bordering on being rude...

However, I replied to a few comments and so did the site owner and it made for some pretty interesting discussion...I really get the feeling that the owner liked the "strong reactions" to my article...

Conversely, another interesting thing happened today...this 1 not quite as positive...

I got an email from a subscriber that subscribed today complaining that they didn't like the fact that I was promoting such an "expensive" information product (product #1 at $27)...they felt that an information product such as the 1 I'm promoting shouldn't be that "expensive"...

So my reply was that they're paying for something that if they follow it will allow them to reap the benefit of it actually working, although I did admit that the price was a bit steep for this kind of information...

But then I went onto point out that the product vendor is really responsive and extremely helpful in answering questions...and that it's a bit pricier than a "regular ebook" for this reason...they get a level of support and assistance that they won't get from an ebook selling on Amazon for $5 or less nor do I think that a $5 ebook on Amazon about this topic would be nearly as good...

However, I don't think I did a very good job of explaining that to them or convincing them that what I was saying was right/true...they unsubscribed from my list...can't win them all I guess...:p

So today was a more interesting day than some...

Out of curiosity, what is the refund rate so far? Any refunds at all?
I haven't had any refunds thus far...I think it's because I'm totally upfront about what they can expect and what it will cost even BEFORE they hit the sales page...

But I expect somewhere along the way that I'll get a refund here and there for both product #1 and product #2 (although I think it would be less likely with product #2 because I think it's a really good product that's definitely worth the cost of admission )...

Although now I CB passes the cost of refunds and chargebacks onto vendors and affiliates so I wouldn't want too many refunds because I would lose money and don't even get me started on how annoying chargebacks are...

In my boyfriend's eBay business he's had a handful of chargebacks over the years and it definitely annoys him to no end...

I chalk refunds (and even chargebacks) up to being part of doing business...it's going to happen at some point but just not often if I'm promoting a good product and I'm promoting the product honestly...

Because even if the product is a good product if you're promoting it in a dishonest way, i.e., lying about/overly exaggerating the benefits, not being upfront about other expenses associated with the product, etc., you can expect a lot of refunds and chargebacks...

So it's just not worth it to lie and be dishonest with the products you promote...

I've been following this thread for a while, and have been enjoying it quite a lot. I'd like to congratulate you on your success.

You mentioned that the products you're promoting don't have very good sales letters. Have you considered contacting the site owner and offering to rewrite their copy/set up a split-testing campaign for them? That would help you as an affiliate, and if the results turn out good, you could get into freelance copywriting.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with article syndication.

Didn't consider it because I'm not a copywriter...I'm not even a good "amateur" copywriter...:p

However, I can tell whether a sales page has copy that isn't "so good" or isn't all that "professional"...that's something most people can spot and I don't think you have to be a copywriter for that...

So to overcome the lack of good sales pages for both products I'm going to have to get really get good/better at pre-selling...either that or promote good products with better sales pages...

For now I like the products I'm promoting so promoting other products isn't in the cards for me right now...

But copywriting is definitely a skill at some point that I need to learn...it's a skill that is extremely valuable and that would pay for itself a million times over I know...

It's on the long term list of things I need to learn among other things related to marketing...

I made 4 sales of product #1 today for a total of $71.92 which pushes my grand total to $2216.49 and I now have 94 subscribers on my buyer's list...

Today's stats:

- 12th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 13th website = 24 visitors to my site

- 14th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 15th website = 9 visitors to my site

- 16th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 17th website = 55 visitors to my site

- 18th website = 267 visitors to my site

- 19th website (the other subscriber on my list) = 39 visitors to my site

And of the 421 visitors to my site today 44 subscribed...

As for what I accomplished today despite spending too much time on the WF this morning going into this afternoon...I created 3 new messages for both of my lists...I went back through some of my messages in my autoresponder series and made a few tweaks to certain messages...and I sent out 20+ "reconnect" emails to website owners have contacted in the past (a few of which I only contacted once before...so it's not overkill)...

Furthermore, website #18 published the 3rd of 9 articles they were interested in...and a few more positive comments came in along with a couple of comments that disagreed with my "controversial" 2nd article...:p

Moreover, the new website owned by 1 of my subscribers (website #19) published the 1st of 5 articles on their site today...

Also, I replied to a couple of email messages from visitors/subscribers as well...no negative emails today thank goodness...:p

So nothing all that eventful today but things are still moving along really nicely...at least what I consider to be "nicely"...

I'm thinking maybe tomorrow I'll start on another article...this 1 I'm really going to take my time with...I notice the more time and effort I put into an article the better it turns out and the more my publishers want to use it as opposed to the couple that I "forced" or spent less time on...

As for what I accomplished today...I created 2 new messages for my both my subscriber lists...and I sent out 20 more "reconnection" emails...not much because I spent too much time on the WF looking around and answering PMs...

From here on out I'm going to spend maybe an hour or 2 at the WF first thing in the morning...and then maybe 1 or 2 hours before I go to bed at night so I can get my "WF fix"...it's actually kind of ridiculous how much time I "waste" on the WF...not the answering PMs and helping people part but the surfing around on WF looking at threads/posts...

Anyway, site #15 published another 1 of my articles in their weekly online newsletter today...that's why there was a spike in traffic from that site...so far they've published 3 of the 8 articles they're interested in using...

And site #18 published the 4th out of 9 articles that they're interested in...

I meant to get started on another article BUT it just didn't happen...also I probably won't be able to tomorrow because I'm running a bunch of errands, and me and my boyfriend have plans with some friends...so I may not get a whole lot accomplished tomorrow either...

I'll more than likely start my new article on Thursday then...

So Brittany, you've made 3 new messages/emails to your audience for both the Freebie & Buyer's email list.

1. How is the "continuity" doing from one email to the next?
2. Do you promote your 2 products in every email or every second?
3. Or do you just direct all your emails to your homepage of the appropriate website depending on your list?
4. How many words on avg per email? 500 or..?

Thanks so much for sharing

Gil...

Brittany,

I am really getting a lot out of your thread and the emphasis on high quality articles and syndication that can be much less demanding than guest blogging. I was wondering also about your autoresponder series. Do you ever do broadcasts or just use the autoresponders? Also, do you write about topics that aren't always related to closely to the products you review but discuss related topics? For instance, when I promoted winter heating products I wrote some articles about how to stay warm in the winter and ways to deal with germs. They weren't directly related to what I sold, but were used to build a relationship. Is that part of what you do as well?

That point hit home for me too. It's why I was uncomfortable buying articles. I could buy or outsource 1000 and with google not being reliable there would be no point. People follow 'people' ... not info.

Just want to say Brittany that it is great to see you surpassing your initial goal - too many people start journals/challenges on WF and other forums and more often than not they fail because they don't properly follow through.

Are you going to rinse and repeat in a new niche at any stage or is health where you want to be?

My apologies for not posting last night...got in really late and went straight to bed...

Yesterday I made 4 sales of product #1 and 1 sale of product #2 for a total of $139.41 and that brings my grand total to $2409.84...and that brought me to 101 subscribers being on my buyers' list...

Yesterday's stats:

- 1st website = 7 visitors to my site

- 2nd website = 2 visitors to my site

- 3rd website = 3 visitors to my site

- 4th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 5th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 6th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 7th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 8th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 9th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 10th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 11th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 12th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 13th website = 22 visitors to my site

- 14th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 15th website = 79 visitors to my site

- 16th website = 4 visitors to my site

- 17th website = 28 visitors to my site

- 18th website = 286 visitors to my site

- 19th website = 26 visitors to my site

And of the 469 visitors to my site yesterday 49 subscribed...

Yesterday sites #18 and #19 published another 1 of my articles to their site...

And I got some emails from visitors/subscribers yesterday that I wasn't around to answer so I'm answering those this morning...

I also got some replies to my "reconnection" emails that I haven't gotten a chance to look at so in my email tonight I'll mention if I get any new website owners/publishers for my content...

I love the fact that even though I didn't really do anything yesterday that I still managed to get $139.41 in commissions!

If people reading this thread don't follow anything else I do please, please, please incorporate email marketing into whatever it is you're going to do...it's like having a salesman/saleswoman (or a promoter if you'd prefer) working for you 24 hours a day...

Brittany,

Your results are awesome and I think you should just grow what you are doing and not even necessarily add more niches as this looks so effective. Also, that is a good idea to spend less time forum reading and surfing (I am guilty of that). And if you don't have time to answer people's pms and comments here people will totally understand.

But if you do have time, I was wondering one thing I didn't ask.

You said that each time you add an autoresponder message you also add a page to your site. Is the page an additional article on same topic? Or is your autoresponder message an introduction to what you post on your site for your new page?

Debbie

Not certain how to answer question #1 because I don't know exactly what you're asking/what you mean but I'll answer your other questions to the best of my ability...

2. For my "freebie" list I'm promoting product #1 and for the "buyer's" list I'm promoting product #2...

As far promoting the product in every email...some emails I directly mention the product I'm promoting and I link to the product review within the content of the message...

Other times if the email is "more about the content" at the end of the email (after the content) I'll basically say to be sure to check out my product review of a product I think will be able to help them get better and faster results than the information provided in my emails...

So in a nutshell I do promote my product in virtually every email...

I'm sure it does at times get a bit repetitive for my list to be pointed to the same review when I mention the product in the message but it seems to be working out okay but in the future I might test it to see if mentioning the product fewer times in my autoresponder lowers or increases conversions...

3. The links in my emails (and I have a link in ALL of my emails) point to different pages on my site...it doesn't point to my homepage...the only thing that ever points to my homepage are the articles I use for syndication...and that's because the main objective of the articles is to get people to my homepage to opt-in...

4. Most of my email messages are fairly long but a few are short...but the short messages are usually short if I'm going to link to a page on my site that has a lot of content...

Whereas the longer messages usually link to a page on my site that goes more in-depth on the topic than I would want to in the message itself OR a page that provides links to resources (other websites) that can provide more info...

I guess the best way to show you what I mean by my answers is to tell you what I do for my first dozen or so emails...

Email #1 I briefly explain the schedule of the autoresponder series, i.e., they'll get a 2nd email from me in 2 days, a 3rd email 3 days after that, and after the 3rd email an email every 4 days...

Then I briefly explain that I'm an affiliate marketer, what an affiliate marketer is and that I'll be recommending 1 product that I get a commission on BUT that it doesn't cost them extra and it's a product that I'm confident will work for them...

Then I provide the link to a page on my site in which they can download their freebie...

Email #2 is basically to check in with them to see if they got the freebie (I provide the link again just in case they didn't get it) and to see if they've read it but have any questions (I provide my email address)...I think that answering questions let's subscribers know you want to help and this I think helps with conversions...

Email #3 is actually a promo email where I basically say that if you found the free report helpful that there's a product that I think is more effective than my free report and that they can find out more about this particular product by clicking the link (which points to my product review)...

Email #4 thru #8 are all content emails that each focus on very specific topics and all of those emails link to a particular page on my website that goes into further detail about the topic or that provides a resource with further info...

But at the end of the emails I have a cliffhanger or teaser that foreshadows what the next email will be about...

Cliffhangers and teasers are to get people curious and interested in the next email which is extremely helpful with open rates...

Also, at the very end of the emails (kind of like a "P.S." thing) I basically say that if they haven't gotten a chance to look at the information about a product that I think might be able to more effectively help them to click on the link (it links to my review)...

Email #9 sums up the content in emails #4-8 and kind of "pulls it altogether"...and then I basically state that more than likely they've already looked at the additional information about a product I think might work for them but if they haven't (or need to refresher on what they've already read) to follow the link...

But if they're still not certain about the product or need answers to questions that they may have about the product or anything they've learned in my emails to email me...

Moreover, I remind them that I'm an affiliate, what an affiliate is, and that if they purchase the product I'm promoting through my affiliate link that it won't cost them anything extra...

And I have been debating on whether I should test mentioning the bonus for purchasing the product I promote in the autoresponder series as opposed to just mentioning the bonus on the product review page...

Anyway, I basically rinse and repeat what I do for emails #4-9 throughout my autoresponder series...the only variation is that sometimes I might have 2 content emails and then an email like #9...or sometimes I might have 5 content emails and then an email like #9...it varies according to the topic/content I'm covering...

I try to mix it up a bit so that subscribers don't think that every 5th email is going to be the "promo email" or something like that...:p

I hope that the above makes sense...and I don't claim it's the best way to do it...obviously it needs work because I'm not even at a 10% sales conversion for the number of subscribers I have on my lists and I feel that I should be at least...

Warrior LegionNate was at roughly a 10% sales conversion when he was using article syndication and email marketing and he was selling a physical product at a higher price point than $27...

I guess I could chalk it up to the fact that physical products do usually have a higher conversion rate than infoproducts but I was still hoping to be at a 10% sales conversion rate...

For the people who don't know what I'm referring to you can check out LegionNate's thread at the following link (it is an old thread so keep that in mind):

I never use broadcasts...but that's because my messages and my content aren't time-sensitive...that and I let subscribers know in the beginning when to expect emails from me and I stick with that...

I feel that broadcasts are only necessary when information is time-sensitive which in my niche it's not, i.e., when you're announcing a webinar date, a time-sensitive sale on a product, and/or something that happened in the news that's related to your niche (which I don't do and I find unnecessary in my niche)...

As for creating "closely related" content in my autoresponder series...I find myself doing this recently because I'm starting to run out of "new" content ideas on the exact subject of my niche...

However, I'm going to try to take the advice of Alexa Smith...she advises to basically "reuse" content as opposed to trying to constantly create new content for your autoresponder series...

And what I think she means by this is to just figure out new ways to say/write content that you've previously used...

For example, when you wrote about how to stay warm in the winter you could maybe several months later write about 'how to stay warm when it's below zero' if you can't think of anything else to write about or don't feel like writing completely brand new content...

Because it would basically have the same content as the 'how to stay warm in the winter' but it would be worded differently and maybe have slight variations in the content to the original...

Alexa has even said that she's used virtually the same content repeatedly in her autoresponder series (it's spaced out over the course of a couple of years...and it's not constant or in back to back messages) and that her subscribers notice but it doesn't bother them...

I'm probably going to start incorporating that strategy more as time goes on, I start running out of ideas/subjects to write about in my niche, and when I go into more niches and don't have time to constantly be writing "brand new" content...

I already mentioned this in another post but it's worth repeating...

In the near future I'm going to go a little bit deeper with this niche in relation to the demographics I target...

For example, if my niche were 'how guys can get ripped'...my plan would be to create separate sites within that niche that cater to the different demographics such as:

- how teenage guys can get ripped
- how guys over 40 can get ripped
- how guys who are seniors can get ripped
- how obese guys can get ripped

While some of those demographics are more "viable" than others I think you get the idea of the niche still being 'how guys can get ripped' but how each separate site would target a "different" kind of guy who wants to get ripped...

Because the information/marketing message will be different for a teenage guy who wants to get ripped than it would be for a 40 year old guy who wants to get ripped, etc. but some of the core basic information will be the same, i.e., you need a better diet and a better exercise regimen to get ripped...

That's the direction in the near future that I'll be going in with my particular niche...

I made 4 sales of product #1 today for $71.92 in commissions and that brings my grand total to $2481.76...and I now have 105 subscribers on my buyers' list...

Today's stats:

- 1st website = 4 visitors to my site

- 2nd website = 3 visitors to my site

- 3rd website = 2 visitors to my site

- 4th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 5th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 6th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 7th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 8th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 9th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 10th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 11th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 12th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 13th website = 14 visitors to my site

- 14th website = 4 visitors to my site

- 15th website = 58 visitors to my site

- 16th website = 5 visitors to my site

- 17th website = 21 visitors to my site

- 18th website = 259 visitors to my site

- 19th website = 13 visitors to my site

And of the 392 visitors to my site 38 subscribed...

Today website #18 published the 6th out of 9 articles they were interested in using...

As for what I accomplished today...I created 2 new messages for the autoresponder series...I sent out a few emails to "reconnect" with some website owners I've contacted in the past...and I started on a new article but it's not going as smoothly as I would like...

I said I'd take my time with this latest article and it might actually be a bit more time consuming as far as research and crafting it in such a way that it's interesting, a bit provocative and doesn't read like a boring and dry research paper...

If it gets any tougher with the article I might scrap the whole idea/topic for the article and just go with an easier subject...

Anyway, I read some emails from website owners from both yesterday and today...all of them saying the same standard duplicate content, unique content, and not being interested lines as usual...:p

But 1 website owner did express interest in using some of my content for the new site that they're building...

This was a website owner that I contacted awhile ago and who I've contacted on 1 other occasion as well who flat out said they weren't interested...but now they are because they're building a large authority site in a market that they already have multiple smaller niche sites in...

They're plan is to create the site, have their smaller niche sites at some point feed the large authority site with traffic (through direct links on the sites and through the different autoresponder series on those sites), and then to use various traffic sources outside of SEO to bring in more traffic to the authority site...

Eventually they want to get SEO traffic to the authority site but unlike the small niche sites he doesn't want SEO to be their primary source of traffic...he wants to use social media, article syndication (like me...I even gave him a few of my sources since he's not a direct competitor), etc. to get traffic to his authority site...

We batted quite a few emails back and forth...and he was very clear on his plan for building up this new authority site...I'm surprised he volunteered so much information to me without me really even asking or pressing him for more information/details...

He's interested in using 6 of my articles and was definitely receptive to getting more articles...however, he won't be using them until after Thanksgiving...

Apparently he wants to start the site out with his own content and content from a few freelance writers he uses on a regular basis...that and he needs to make "minor" adjustments to his smaller niche sites and the autoresponder series of those niche sites...so it will take time...

Also, with knowing all of that I don't expect to necessarily get a ton of traffic from his authority site to my site but maybe his smaller niche sites acting as "feeder sites" might bring in enough traffic to his authority site which will in turn bring my site a decent amount of traffic...

Do you think that your content is unique and that they are just telling you to go away?

I wonder if they even read your article.

Apologies for not posting yesterday guys...a good friend of my boyfriend's was visiting last night so we all went out to dinner with him and his girlfriend and then we all stayed out way too late at the casino...

Anyway, yesterday I made 2 sales of product #1 and and 1 sale of product #2 for a total commission of $103.45 yesterday...which brought my grand total to $2585.21 and I now have 107 subscribers on my buyers' list...

Yesterday's stats:

- 1st website = 3 visitors to my site

- 2nd website = 2 visitors to my site

- 3rd website = 2 visitors to my site

- 4th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 5th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 6th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 7th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 8th website = 2 visitors to my site

- 9th website = 1 visitor to my site

- 10th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 11th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 12th website = 0 visitors to my site

- 13th website = 8 visitors to my site

- 14th website = 7 visitors to my site

- 15th website = 39 visitors to my site

- 16th website = 3 visitors to my site

- 17th website = 15 visitors to my site

- 18th website = 274 visitors to my site

- 19th website = 27 visitors to my site

And of the 386 visitors to my site yesterday 35 subscribed...

Yesterday site #18 published the 7th out of the 9 articles of mine that they were interested in using...site #19 published the 3rd out of 5 articles that they're interested in using...

As for what I accomplished yesterday...I created 2 new autoresponder messages...I emailed 20+ new website owners...I sent out a few "reconnection" emails to website owners I've contacted in the past...I responded to a couple emails from site visitors/subscribers....

Yesterday I really tried to complete the new article I was working on that's a bit more research-based and work than I initially thought it would be...I finally just decided to work on the article at a later date and to start an article on a different (and "easier" topic)...

However, I put off starting the new article because I decided to work on an article that I had been promising a fellow warrior I would get to him...won't go into detail about what it's about...but that's when I got interrupted by my boyfriend's friend dropping in unexpectedly with his girlfriend to visit...

And that's when we all decided to go out to dinner and from their we went to the casino...it was a fun night but we didn't get back til really late...

Anyway, it's amazing to me that before I was doing well with this it seemed I had very few distractions and now I've got more distractions coming at me than I once had before...but today regardless of what's going on I'm going to get a lot of work done...including the new article AND the article I promised a fellow warrior yesterday but didn't deliver on...

Brittany,

It is great to read your updates and if you don't want to answer additional questions, please feel free to skip this. Also, if I ask something that you may have answered, just let me know if you discussed it in the other thread or this one and I will look for it.

1) I think AnniePot and a few others you mention contact people for syndication and do the ezinearticles part at the very end. I don't think you are doing that, so have you found this makes a difference?

2) When you send out new articles to your publishers do you do that with an autoresponder or do you send it individually to each one. I can see how that could add up in a lot of time as this grows. I guess another option is to send them to your ezinearticles account with each new publication.

I am not doing much syndication right now but did write to someone who published one of my articles and has a busy site. I had written her a unique one. I asked her how she feels if I send it to other website owners and she told me that she doesn't want me to do that, but she'd be fine if I put an article on my own site and sent it then to her as the only one. Since I have some articles already on my site, I can do that. It is interesting how each website owner has their own ways of thinking about this.

Debbie
