Rewrite a piece of fiction from the public domain and publish it to Amazon in 2 weeks
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

That's it guys - grab a public domain work, rewrite it sufficiently that it is your own work, with your own twists and personality - publish it to Amazon

- this isn't a trick - derivative works of public domain books come under your own copyright!

Challenge begins 1st Feb 2014.

Between now and then get busy picking a movie, book or radio show to create a book from!

Post your daily progress here from 1st feb.

This is a really good challenge and although my time is taken up with my online business I am sure I can find some time to enter. I like it when someone comes up with something different. Have to search the PD now. Anyone know of the best sites?

In the US, copyrighted works expire 70 years after the death of the author. This is a generalization though.

This link has more info - Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States - It is a nice table and very easy to read.

Hope this helps:

Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/): Our ebooks are free in the United States because their copyright has expired.

Other public domain materials: Public Domain Text

Good luck with your challenge!

Lack creativity? No original thoughts? Have a bad case of lazy brain? Try something like this. Who knows, you may come up with the next Great American Novel... like "John Sawyer" or "Slaughterhouse Six" or "Grapefruits of Wrath." (Last 2 are still in copyright so plagiarize them more carefully).

IMO, this challenge is for people with too much free time on their hands.

That shows a distinct lack of imagination. Walt Disney created a lot of his classics from fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm.. I myself have rewritten non-fiction books from the public domain and added my own slant to them which have earned 5 star reviews.

If you're not interested in the challenge, why do you feel the need to comment? Why not just go about your business and leave others to do as they wish.

I have seen other challenges that have resources available for the people involved, so for those interested, don't start yet - i am going to create some resources of where you can find stuff in the PD, examples of what others have done with PD and tips and tricks to doing this properly. So, don't do anything yet and I will be back with details of how I can help you do it.

PS - this is also supposed to be something fun, so if you are a naysayer, you know what you can do - keep on moving to the next post!

This looks interesting. I've always wanted to experiment with Kindle so maybe this can be an avenue for that.

I think the 1st step would be to list down some sites that carry works that are expired (sorted by category/genre)

It's work that either cannot get a copyright, or the copyright expired. Generally it's any work published before the 1020's, but there are many more factours to consider.

What a great idea! You could even grab two and mash them up as a starting point. Maybe "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes meets Alice in Wonderland" or "Huckleberry Finn vs Dracula".

Just a thought.

Old post but I may be able to write some short story from scratch but thing is my grammar is 98% good and 2% as it is

I wonder if I should experiment and simply submit book as it is lol

I am thinking something like 50 pages.

However promotion takes times. I rewrote one book on weight loss and added a lot of working stuff sold about 5 copies

Next one if any will be fantasy/comedy
