Wordpress on VPS With Hosting Companies vs Digital Ocean

Hi.. i'm currently hosting a couple of wordpress sites on a shared hosting platform, with site5. I'm driving traffic to the sites via facebook, roughly 100 clicks a day for each website.

They keep telling me that the wordpress is having too many processes, so it keeps hanging. Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't. I'm trying to optimize the sites as we speak..

meantime i'm thinking of signing up to digital ocean.. But I can probably setup one wordpress on each instance ($10/month) I'm not very technical, so I'm not so comfortable to get a higher end vps with them, then install multiple wordpress sites on one vps.

I'm considering the above option, vs getting a vps with say Hostgator or Site5. Its more costly, probably $50/month onwards, but it comes with cpanel so i can easily add on the sites..

Which do you think its a better option? Getting multiple instances from digital ocean, or a vps from a hosting provider? thanks

Digital Ocean is a good solution, but another option would be Rackspace Cloud sites, you can easily set-up WP with them and host unlimited sites. It is more expensive, but performance, uptime and support are some of the best in the business. From $150 a month.

    HI,

dont go for vps hosting , is not suitable for blogs which are daily updateds, you cant configure backups on that, i preferred go with low configuration dedicated servers

I'd highly suggest steering very clear of Site5 and Hostgator. They are owned by EIG and have fallen really low regarding quality. They're really bad now.

You can read about more of EIG's brands here: As Full As Possible List of EIG Companies and Brands With Details (Beware EIG Hosting!)

Furthermore, are you sure you need a VPS? 100 clicks isn't a lot, and could easily fit on any standard shared web hosting at a decent provider.
If you're set on getting a VPS - management would be needed to maintain security updates on the server level (not just Wordpress).

I'd suggest going shared hosting - and when your needs for a VPS become apparent - then go for one.

    Totally agree with Localnode above.

    1) Don´t go for DigitalOcean if you are not a developer geek (host is NOT managed and will need lots of configuration from your part).

    2) Go with a GOOD shared hosting like Siteground or Inmotion.

    3) If needed, upgrade to a VPS, but make sure it is Fully Managed.

I'm going to have to throw my voice in the avoid EIG companies group as well. If you're willing to spend around $50 a month, I would highly suggest checking out a managed VPS from a provider like WiredTree. They are as good as it gets when it comes to support or service.
