The tl;dr is that in the vast majority of cases press is good for:
  • Investor outreach
  • Employee outreach
  • SEO backlinks
But press is generally not an engine of growth, except for a handful of cases where there is a self-perpetuating narrative to the press.

I tend to agree with him, and would add that outside of the valley press is even more fickle, as the readership often lacks the critical mass to endlessly demand "look at this cool startup" stories.
