Top 3 marketing focus areas for startup

Hi guys,

I am new to Warrior Forum.

We just launched a new business, Slidepanda.com. We provide powerpoint design services.

I am looking for ideas to promote / market my new start-up. Can you share the top 3 marketing areas that I should focus on. The intention is to drive business growth at the moment.

Appreciate your response!

Cheers,
Prasanna

traffic sources, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many traffic sources

find a solid target with all the data

    niche down

    insert cash, take out profits

then go to social media influencers and pay them $1000 each for some kind of campaign over the course of 3 weeks

    Hi Prasanna,

I had a look at SlidePanda. It looks like a great service. It would easily be consumed by many people who are busy and cannot make a slide.

But you are saying that this is a Startup and on the website you are already showing 500 Customers + 8 years in business. That may not go down well with people who come to your site.

There needs to be some explanation about the 8 years. You can be a Startup and can have 500 customer in a day if the product is really good but you cannot be 8 years experienced and then call yourself a startup.

So you don't need 3 areas to focus on. Really you just need one are, and that is
    - Who is your exact customer?
    - Why does he need this service from you? Why can't he do it himself?

When you start answering this question you will have some answer. And in that answer you have to find the right customer.

Think about it like this. If you already have 500 customers. Then why did they buy your service. Even if 10 of those 500 customers tell you. You can easily create the required content on your website that will attract those customers.

    Think in that manner.

Hope you are able to find your ideal customer.

    Stay Focused. Stay Rich,
    Amit Patel

Some very good points here, good post.

I have also had some good experience with Slidepanda in the past.

    • Thanks Amit for taking the time to go through the website - really appreciate it!

We have been doing presentations via the freelancing portals for the past 8+ years. We have taken a step further by launching our own website now. I thought it adds value to mention the past work and the experience of the team - even though it's not done under the brand name Slidepanda which is just launched. But great observation here, I agree - i need to figure out a way of giving a timeline for 8 years.

Great insights in terms of beginning the marketing focus by trying to understand the customers. Let me go back to my drawing board, i will keep you posted on the progress.

      Thanks Again!!!

Ok, so for the 8 Years, you put it as a story that you did all these research when you were working somewhere else. This research led to birth of Slide Panda. When you want to show that even within the Startup you are already an expert, then use the years of grooming where you became an expert.

It is like if I start a company today related to some product. I can say that when I was working for 22 years in xyz industry this one problem kept coming again and again. This gave me an idea to help people solve this problem.

It can work in that sense. So blend the 8 Years of experience as story. And put the actual date when SlidePanda Started. That should work well.

Might be possible to feature the "team with XXX combined years of experience in....." while also featuring the site/service as "new". Instant credibility to a new site when there is perception of experience behind the launch.

There are several ways that you can promote your new startup. I suppose your primary target is business owners (?). If that is the case, then there are forums which are dominated by such people. Perhaps you can use such forums to subtely market your services. From my personal experience I can say that forums are absolutely golden. But then again, its a matter of trying and testing different strategies until you find what works best for you. It might not be forums but social media. The only way to find out is to keep trying and testing. All the best Prasanna!

I checked out the website it's great. I love the before and after series.

    Here's my suggestion.
have you ever thought about targeting the academic industry as well? I'm sure a lot of professors would love to get their presentations designed well.

I think you shouldn't focus on a lot of areas here.

Probably the best way to proceed it's what Amit Patel told you to do.
Find out what your customers find appealing on your services and offer it more and better and what they don't like to change it or eliminate it.

After that then you should focus on promoting to professors and maybe even some YouTubers would like to benefit from your service.

Hire someone to rework the English on the site. It is weird - and that will make people think that, if they buy your service, the English will be equally weird.

The main image on the site (two people staring into each other's eyes) does not sell your service at all. It would be better suited for a dating site.

The numbers on the main site look totally fake. They need to live update (otherwise repeat visitors to your site will think you're not making any sales). And they should never end up as round numbers.

I recommend spending the money to sort the site sales copy and the marketing message before looking outside the site.

    #2

You need to think about a main offer that appeals to your customers, rather than the wide-ranging services you are offering now.

Even having spent 10 minutes on the site, I'm not too sure what you're offering. Are you writing content for the slides? Are you just taking existing content and reformatting it for slides?

What about the images? Are they all legally sourced and the appropriate rights given to clients?

The price point seems very high without a single breakout product to focus your marketing around (the quality of the designs is very high)

    #3

Once all that is sorted, my single "bang for the buck" marketing technique would be to reach out for influencers and offer them a free trial of your service, ideally in return for a review or testimonial.

This will work even better if you have an affiliate link for the influencers to promote.

You can set a sensible limit about what you're willing to do for the review.

    Bonus Tip

Based on what you advertise on the site, if I was to advise you on a single service to promote and focus on, it would be the blog post to (SlideShare) presentation service.

This was wide appeal and lets people get more out of their existing content. It also means that you have content in an editable form, so you don't have to worry about writing it.

I would also visibly promote this on the landing page, including as a Special Offer (the current approach, appealing to high volume clients, just won't work until you have more credibility and contacts).

I hope those tips are useful. If you do have a marketing budget, let me know if you'd like to consult further about this.

Well, as I am also running a startup, yellowbulbs.com for years i can tell you few things about this topic before you starts your company..

First of all, if you want to get good results online you always keep this in mind to do perfect planning to execution. A successful startups hit all the chords perfectly with their SEO strategies. They manage to rank high on Google and other search engines for even most competitive keywords.

The other most important strategies that i have listed bellow for any startup whether its online or offline,

    1. Knowing Your Market : What is a Market for the Start Up? It isn't only a place for a product/service/idea to be sold at an appropriate price.

    2. The Start Up Valuation : Why start the Start Up? Once the product integrity and the position differentiator have been identified, the Start Up exists to make value for the founders and investors.

    3. When To Take The First Funding: Once the product has been identified, its features locked, its deliverables listed, the market identified and the positioning decided, it's time to get FUNDED.

    4. Knowing Who To Hire : Hiring for a Start Up is not a run-of-the-mill HR process. It needs effort and cannot be dependent on computerized suggestions.

    5. The Start Up Infrastructure: With the funding taken as well, it's time to get cracking.

Like mentioned, these aren't some out-of-the-box practices. All that best startups does those things consistantly .

So if you are looking to establish yourself as a leading name in your industry, follow the above steps and rock the world.

    Hope this may help you.

    Thanks and regards

    Hello,

For business growth , You need SSL, this is major now, then work on design, I would choose more of a selling style platform, loose all large images, on home page, set up more of a store style, show people the product as quick as possible, change video on home page to a real marketing video, with voice over that shows your product.

I know your not asking for design help, but for it to do better I would change things.

So for marketing, YouTube videos package, film like 10 videos, major SEO, and contact web design companies, they all out source.

I've read one blog, i forgot the link. But mainly the idea is to start off with direct contact. Social media and SEO is good but it takes awhile to build up. What they suggest to do is outreach to other businesses or directly contact people who needs help in a specific niche.

I myself is also a startup of WordPress support and maintenance and I can say that Social Media is hard for startups if you really don't have proofs to show. I mean how can you influence people if you haven't shown any value to others. So I am reaching out to many people helping them directly with WordPress so if you are running a WordPress site I'd like to volunteer to be your maintenance guy for free if you would like to. Just send me a pm.

Your website looks very good, the English might need a polish, as it reads slightly weirdly at times. E.g. "7 stunning strategy.." (should be "strategies")

Much of the content is structured around what you do and offer, take a bit of time to drill down and understand your best customers and the specific problems you are solving for them, talk to them, get some testimonials so visitors can identify with the value you offer better.

Have a think about any pieces of high value content you could provide that would be attractive to prospective customers. Then offer it as a download, follow up with email nurture sequences to keep your business in mind and nurture your leads.

You could try creating an online course for improving presentation techniques to drive lead generation. I think the bottom line is that sketching out a buyers journey and aiming to generate leads and move them through it would give you a mechanism (sales funnel) to focus on.

    Hope this helps!

    1. Use Quora - You can get a huge amount of traffic and conversions from there.

    2. Create a Fiverr account and provide services there. Fiverr now allows selling bigger packages. Create an extraordinary gig. Take benefit of the traffic there.

    3. SEO, Twitter, and everything else.

The top three areas I would look at is:

    1. Figure out what your competitors are doing. To do this check out http://www.ahrefs.com . What you can do is plugin your competitor and see where he has got links and go after some of those same links.

    2. Start a referral program. Once you get a few customers, you should offer them a percentage of the sale if they send you new business. You can use http://www.osiaffiliate.com

    3. Do Facebook Advertising, but start slow. See what is working and then add money once you see it working. The key with Facebook is knowing who to target. I targeting a few things and make sure you monitor each thing and then cancel what does not work and add more money to what works.

Since marketing for startups is such a unique case, this guide should give founders a good place to start. As your business grows and expands its presence, it may attract customers through word of mouth. Until that happens, though, you should prioritize the following marketing strategies to spread the word about your startup.

    1. Send Emails
    2. Start A Blog
    3. Post On Social Media
    4. Use Paid Search Advertising
    5. Sponsor An Event
