I being a little fish by comparison to some here in this section of the forum. I am just curious if it would be possible for the more advanced Growth Hackers to share what software they are using when the are running A / B testing, Viral Growth analysis, retention testing etc...

I pretty much borrow or develop my own tools for the most part using excel. Mr. Barrie shared an article by Andrew Chen, that actually links to a few different Excel format viral growth tools. I personally have used Rahul Vohra's "How to Model Viral Growth" for the last year or so. a Link to his post: How to Model Viral Growth: The Hybrid Model

So is there some solid "mainstream" software products that anyone could share based on personal usage? I know I would be all ears!

Thanks!

Hi - in terms of A/B testing I've done a lot of it and used loads of different tools (Optimizely, Test & Target, Maxymiser etc.) I have just done some work for a client with limited budget and used Google's free Content Experiments A/B testing tool that comes as part of Google Analytics. It's really simple to use and does the job, no bells and whistles but does the basics most people need.

Visual website optimiser is great for A/B tests. Optimisly is good as we'll. if you are serious about testing then you need a serious tool like those in my opinion. Much better than Google content experiments.

I have been a bit more than playing around with Visual Website Optimizer. It is very easy to use, and the results are in your face easy to read. I will tell you that if you do use the free trial version, be prepared to upgrade!

Since there has been some sharing here. I am curious what other people use as a standard to test with. Meaning how many visitors do you use across your test. For me personally it depends on the amount of traffic I have on the site I am testing. I have a site that gets a Million visitors a month, so I try to test with 5000 users across the test area. I also have other sites that get like 10,000 a month, so I go with 500 or so.

Another interesting note. I try to do most of my testing on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. Across all of my sites with the exception of 1 these are consistently my busiest traffic days. I in no way even think of testing on Saturday and Sunday, again across the board with the exception of 1 site are my worst traffic days.

Talk about a Growth Hack... figuring out how to level off the traffic across the seven days of the week would be awesome. If Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday were a factor of 100% Monday and Friday would be 75% or so, and the weekend would be a factor of 50%. That leaves the potential for growth on off days by an overall average of 28%, which is a lot! I will say I have tried for years to play with this, and have yet to find anything that resembles an increase!

True, it's good enough for most folks and integrates with analytics so you can tie things together. Optimizely, Visual Website Optimizer etc are probably aimed at a developer/design level though both are worth paying for once you have/buy the required expertise.

I completely agree. And you can add custom event tracking to your site. It also supports UTM tracking, which is great for sending half your audience to one page and the other half to another page.
