Looking for reliable host outside Hostgator family

by EvcRo
96 replies
I finally decided that Hostgator is a shit host and prepared to relocate my websites.

I would like to hear about good hosts that offer VPS's with minimum downtime and no maintenance on thursday-friday like the brainless monkeys from hostgator do.

And no Endurance International Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , it's same poor thing.

thanks

I use digital ocean, it's cheap and has been quite reliable for me so far.

You can also use server pilot with this if your not to clued up on running your own vps.

I use digital ocean its cheap, but an even cheaper route is Amazon ec2

Amazon is the only place I know that you pay for what you use. This helps those first few months when you have very little traffic on your site.

I use Hawkhost. Never had a problem with them and been with them for a good while now. Had difficulties with a couple of hosts before them but these guys are good. BTW I'm with you re Hostgator, they are one of the hosts I tried and dropped like a hot potato. I have no idea why they're so popular.

I will add another vote for HawkHost. Been using their hosting since 2011 with no problems whatsoever.

They used to be a good host, at one time. Past tense.

Unfortunately, EIG's business model appears to be to take over as many hosting companies as possible and gradually turn them all into unreliable customer service nightmares.

      @Alexa,
You should really give digital ocean or ramnode a shot. They offer cloud VPS at really economical prices.

I know that it is a little bit of learning but it may well be worth it. You can use the duplicator plugin to transfer your wordpress sites. There are guides which show that.

From what I see from your previous posts you should really be able to pick up whatever you need to know.

Noooooooo, far from it! I'm technophobic and incompetent. I'm very willing to pay inflated/premium prices for inflated/premium customer service and support, because I'm always the person who's going to need it. I can find ways of screwing up techie things that other people wouldn't even dream of.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that she and most people around here (including me) won't benefit from it. I have a friend who recommended DigitalOcean to me and I signed-up for a plan before I did any research. It turns out they only provide you with access to the server and then ... "you can do whatever you want from there." They don't offer support for installing WordPress or for maintaining it. They only offer support regarding the server you're using to host whatever you host.

DigitalOcean is meant for developers, not for people who know little-to-nothing about coding or server commands or whatever that activity is called.

Yet most developers won't get anywhere near that company.

Why? Because they lie about it being a "cloud". It's not. It's a normal VPS, and does NOT use cloud infrastructure. To them, it's just a buzzword, where "cloud" is a synonym for "online". The term has been raped.

DO is also degrading in performance as their customer base grows. It appears their pulling an EIG, and overstuffed servers rather than allocating new ones for new customers. Cram 'em in!

There are better servers for devs.

    What is Digital Ocean?

I heard Namecheap is pretty darn legit when it comes to hosting.

(One of my friends recently said they rock. Perhaps will give them a try).

That being said, I'm waaaaay too lazy to move all my hosted properties without doing a lot of homework first.

Liquid Web is very good. Not super cheap, tho'.

I am thinking of checking out Namecheap. I bought some
SSL Certs from them. I am new with SSL Certs and they
          provided excellent support.

The question is whether you can get unique IP addresses
at your host. And if they offer unique B, C, or D IP addresses.

Here is one! Bluehost terminated all of my domains because they was saying it was against their TOS. After 1 Week discusion they gave my data back and I could move to an other hoster. (AmeriNOC) If you like your Data forget Bluehost!

Could you tell us more about these charts? It looks like they're snapshots of very narrow and different timeframes. Do you have anything that shows a larger sample? Also, it would be important to know something about the platform where these tests are run and what kind of connectivity they have. Also, are these testing the same application on both servers?

Charts and graphs say a lot, but it's good to know what exactly they are saying.

As a part of my research and case-study, I reviewed one of EIG hosting. So you may compare the two charts below. Keep in mind that both companies are from the same price range (10-15 USD/mo).

A bad performarnce (slow site, downtimes), an EIG hosting:

And a good performance (stable good speed). EuroVPS hosting that I use:

Server response time differs in tens of times!

P.S. Bluehost also belongs to Hostgator family (because they both belong to one parent comapny EIG), so be prepared for a known pattern of oversold and overloaded servers.

P.P.S.: more about horrors of EIG hosting you may find in the web and especially on webhostingtalk.com. And the full case-study on FatCow, if you are interested, is here.

I've also heard very good things about LiquidWeb, and they're on my shortlist.

(Namecheap isn't an option for me as a host, however good, because they happen to hold all my domain registrations and I don't want to move them).

I'm also considering hosting all my sites in the UK, because I have a good and trusted UK host. I say this only because I don't care about Google rankings at all: I wouldn't for a moment suggest it to anyone who does. (I may well decide not to do this, but it's little a bit tempting, given that I have very happy experience of it with my one UK niche site.)

If you have problems with the host and you domain is registered elsewhere, you can simply change the DNS to point to a new host. Some hosting companies hold domains "hostage". Some fail to renew them, etc. Best practice, keep them separate.

You can use Digital Ocean. It provides more flexibility (unlike shared hosting) and with the reasonable price.

If you use wordpress, there is an easy server setup in the digital ocean's main panel. You don't need to configure the server.
But if later you want to configure your server, you can always outsource the process.

You can get a free $10 credit when 1) you use affiliate link and 2) deposit $5. Go find the link in Google. Alternatively, you can follow digital ocean's twitter account, they regularly announce promo code.

Brinkster is not cheap, but they have super consumer service. Also, they got both ASP and PHP if you need it, but the problem is price. I have had a good ride so far, but that could change soon. For example, look at host gator which was a great company. Sadly, they got bought up. Still remember HG back when they were in cypress creek many years ago. Oh, all those warm memories. Do hope the best for you.

When you ask a legal question on the WF, most people caution you
not to take legal advice from an internet marketing forum. Well, I take
the same advice when it comes to hosting as well. Go where the experts
hang out. So when I wanted to choose a host I went to a webhosting forum
and asked a question and most people recommended wiredtree.com.

I have been happy with them for three years now.

I can only vouch for Yahoo Webhosting. I've been using them for the longest. But make sure you don't settle for the hosting provider that has the lowest price. They have a low price for a reason - along with free webhosting services. When i was in college, our professor had us set up a project with 1&1 domains and freehostia. Was *sketchy* at times, but got me an "A+". But hurry up and pick one... dont waste a week trying to figure this out. It's time to get out there and start marketing.

    Hi there,

Just been through horrendous week with all my client sites hosted at Hostgator going down several times....

I see that HG support has deteriorated quite badly over recent months and they are certainly not delivering the kind of service I need for my clients...

Ok so please provide recommendations of which hosting companies are considered to be the best out there....

I am currently using a reseller/shared program at Hostgator - hosting html, Wordpress and .mobi websites.

Reliability/redundancy, speed and IMMEDIATE support is vital to me....

    Appreciate your input...

      Hi Greg,

I know exactly the frustrations you're going through. Been there...done that!

Your first step is to get your sites off of HostGator today...not tomorrow but today.

      My top 5 providers are:

      1. Liquid Web
      2. NameCheap (Yes, NameCheap ROCKS and their hosting and support is amazing)
      3. Site5
      4. Crocweb

Again, for those that need know...

    Don't use:
    - Godaddy
    - Yahoo
    - 1&1
    - Dreamhost
    - the 50+ EIG brands, including Hostgator, Bluehost, Justhost, iPage, Fatcow, and a crapload of others

@OP -- The "Hostgator family" is EIG. Hostgator ceased to exist more than 2 years ago, and is just a shell of its former self, existent in name only. The old HG company is gone, and has been gone for a long while.

There are MANY better hosts out there that are not these 5 crappy ones.

A reliable host is a secure host. If your host is unsecure, it won't be reliable for very long.

Wow I didn't realize how many hosting companies are owned by EIG - looking at the wiki link provided by the OP... With that in mind my vote goes for Inmotion Hosting! Very reliable, can scale up easily and with great 24/7 support....

In addition I personally hate hosting providers whom have their own proprietary backend systems with hidden costs which are counter intuitive and impossible to use (thinking godaddy here lol)... So for me another important factor is provision of cpanel...

I'm curious as to why nobody has mention web.com - Are they unreliable? I'm also using HostGator, and was looking into alternatives today. Also, once I switch to another host, will I still be able to access my older email messages from my HostGator account? Right now I have about 20 domains hosted there with numerous email addresses...

HostGator has really started creating shit by giving too much down time. I had few sites hosted there, but all are low traffic websites.

Last month I shifted my site on ASmallOrange hosting. Till now it's working perfect for me.

Their packages give you the best bang for your money. I have both the $4.99 plan and $24.99. My websites are super fast now! And no problem with downtime. Actually theri wordpress hosting packages are setup with all the features to make wordpress fly.

Okay, I'm about to become "Mr. Unpopular"...

I've been with HostGator for about a year now. I've never had a problem with them. Today I had to use their support (live chat) for the first time. The support guy was extremely helpful, and gave me the solution that I needed. See my post here for the problems I was having.

  • Do you consider VPS or dedicated server?
If you know nothing about setting up server, Wordpress and all this stuff you can outsource it, but in long perspective it will be much more cost-effective and flexible than any hosting. You can also ask to install zPanel for you. I've never used it myself, but as far as I know it's similar to cPanel.

My recommendations are DigitalOcean or Amazon for VPS, and Kimsufi for dedicated server.

I'd HIGHLY recommend against using zPanel - it's been exploited countless times and appears the project has been abandoned. If your websites mean anything to you in terms of security, stay far away from zPanel.

I know that feeling. I left hostgator because I received an email about signing up for hosting and was eligible to receive a discount, so I emailed and asked since I was already a customer could I get discount applied? Answer was no, I said OK, cya, and they tried to keep me by saying I could have the discount but already made up my mind to leave.

I've tried tons of different hosting and I left both hostgator and bluehost. Bluehost's customer support was terrible. Sometimes I had to wait 3 weeks for a reply.

I'm currently using namecheap and so far I'm happy with it. I'm also currently testing out another new, less-known and very cheap hosting company and I'll let everyone know in the end if its good or not.

And to answer the question why hostgator is still so big even though they suck...a lot of it is that their affiliate program is better than the others (or at least more well known).

I stopped using my Hostgator affiliate link though, because I won't promote or endorse a product or service that I know sucks.

So, my 2 cents = if you have to chose between hostgator, namecheap and bluehost....namecheap is the best option.

I cannot help but to recommend our company services. 6 POPs worldwide, top-notch hardware (our own Supermicro enterprise level systems with SSD caching for 5x file throughput speed), and REALLY 24/7 support. Response time for ticket is almost instant and issues are solved in hours, not weeks.

What else can I say? We do treat our customers well, as we value each customer, they are not just numbers. We run regular promotions and provide decent discounts, up to 50% in certain cases. Long-term customers can ask for even more discounts, which are usually provided.

This doesn't guarantee you will always have that. It basically means if they fail to provide it, you will be compensated per their SLA terms for the difference.

I am sure someone has said this before but cast my vote for Namecheap. I have been with them for a few years now and my site has only burped once for about a minute.

I heard HostGator was bought out a few years back and now their servers are in a crowded co-located facility. Which means the sites compete with everyone else for bandwidth. I don't know this for a fact.

Well my experience with BzYBHosting has been horrible. Too arrogant and unapologetic for their own goof-ups

We had VPS plan with bzybhosting with R1Soft backup subscribed.

Accidently we got 2 Gb data deleted for one of the domain on 5th July , which we reported on 7th.

We were told that they restored it on 8th.

We noticed after we days that bzybhosting restored of 6th / 7th - so effectively we lost our data

as they say now that they don't have our data.

Interestingly when we raised this issue with them - bzybhosting say we don't have data any more

and started accusing us for the abuse.

After realizing that they have goofed -up - then started threatening us to terminate our services arbitrarily.

I made huge mistake by believing their marketing claims.

      regards

Because it was ok before the group bought it, then the group spent so much on marketing but decrease the hardware, service, support cost a lot to maximum its profit.
