Are there any 'economy' web hosting services that don't totally suck?

You know, the ones that are like $2-3 a month?

  • most of the 2-3 per month are going to suck they are shared. You can still get going that is what I did but later you will be limited. What I use to do when I started making money was a dedicated but the bill is high then I tested a VPS for way less and found that to be pretty good and way better then shared! So that is what I use now the one I have is with Hostmonster but the thing that is getting worse is the support, so I might switch at some point and switching is easy if you WHM (ass your sites at once!)

I would go with Hostgator, they are about $10 a month for up to 10 domains, and have great support, overall.

They tend to have issues now and then but it is usually quickly resolved.

May be it was good before changing owner but not now:

Not really. But if you can stretch into the the $8-$10 range, then check out the ones below.

    www.stablehost.com
    www.crocweb.com
    www.hostwinds.com
    www.siteground.com

These are all non-EIG hosts that have received great reviews. You can find many good discounts and reviews for these hosts in the promo area at Web Hosting Talk - The largest, most influential web hosting community on the Internet.

I know Hostgator has been getting some bad press, but I've had no problems. Any issues are responded to and resolved quickly. Been with them a few months and had no downtime.

Thanks for your experience sharing and I look at your replied history, dont look like you work for EIG marketing. Well, I think those EIG owned hosting bad comments are real too since there is no other major hosting companies in market so no copmany would spend money to make fake comment of EIG

You can't expect any hosting company to be perfect, especially when you are paying budget prices. I have been with hostgator for years now and it suits me fine with no problems. If I had the higher traffic levels or resource intensive scripts that seem to cause problems for shared hosting services, I'd look into paying more for a dedicated server.

I am not saying it has to be perfect but very obviously it is nightmare after EIG took it over , there are thousands of bad comment saying hostgator is doing so bad after EIG took it over. It could take weeks of no response after submit support ticket. Crazy many downtime. You can just search hostgator in this forum and find this out, or go to Web Hosting Talk, or see my post:

As I said there are so many hosting companies now and no major one, there is no clear benefit if any hosting pay and make bad comments online about EIG owned hosting companies. I don't see any reasons all of these bad comments are fake.

No, I don't work for EIG, never heard of them! Just relating my own personal experience with Hostgator.

It seems that many people have had problems, but my experience has been ok. Had I come across this thread before I went with Hostgator I might have made a different choice.
I guess James, who asked the original question "Are there any 'economy' web hosting services that don't totally suck?" will read all these answers and make his choice based on that.

Sound like a normal HG experience

I looked them up, now I understand, guess I've been lucky so far with Hostgator, EIG do NOT get good press!

Yes, there are plenty of them, but you should up your budget by just a bit more to ensure you're getting a good web host.

Everyhost is going to have issues even the big ones, but I think it's better to bite the bullet and pay the $10 a month to get some support. Personally I think Dreamhost and Hostgator are the best out there at the moment.

Took me 2 minutes to get someone on live chat last week .....not forever. I've never submitted a ticket that was not answered by HG.

I know it's fashionable to bash HG and other hosts because of EIG - but not everyone has had problems after the buyout. I've had good service from HG for years.

It's certain not worth arguing EIG or anything else if you want $2-3 hosting. That is low end and you need to limit your expectations.

There are many companies who offer decent hosting at $2/$3. But if you have huge traffic then I believe you should move to a better plan ($8/$10). I use Web Hosting - LUN Host - reseller hosting, vps hosting, cpanel hosting and so far I haven't faced any problem. Many of my clients also use it but so far no negative comments.

  • I still have a BlueHost account that is shared that does pretty well with a few sites. I got in on a monthly rate that was pretty low through a coupon. Might check into them...not $3 a month but cheaper than HostGator and some of the other popular ones.

I use Dreamhost because I have never been let down by the CSR in the live chat when asking 'serious' technical questions. The technical knowledge of their CSRs is the best. I have never been directed to 'read' a page and work things myself. I just tell them I don't know how to do it + I don't have the time read a long page of strange language. They do it for me - everytime. I don't remember opening a ticket for an issue. I think when I was starting out back in 2009, I must have but not in the recent 4-5 years. They give enough time to me and never force me to just finish the session (I wrap it up quickly of course).

Yes, the rates are high (I think upto $10 or something for just one website - see on their site for current rates). Since I have multiple sites and needed my own server, I use VPS and it's worth every penny!

I think dreamhost is a ok choice while it is little bit expensive, but I think one day EIG will buy Dreamhost.
