Membership software/script

Hi everyone,

I apologise for having another newbie question:

I have decided that the best way forward on my website is to create a membership area, (at the moment I cannot decide whether to have a paid membership or charge for certain publications).

I have looked on the forum for software, but can only find ones relating to wordpress, and the most seem to recommend Memberwing.

Can someone tell me whether this would work on a website not produced by wordpress or recommend another.

At the moment, I'm looking at a reasonably priced or even free software to get it up and running and then make the switch at a later date if required.

Thanks very much and apologies for duplicating a thread in advance...

Dawn

Hi Dawn, I use Delavo, which is the new version of Fantasos. To buy it is is thousands, but you can get a hosted version for $27 per month. If you don't like that, I haven't used it myself, but i've heard some great things about aMember.

I am about to kickoff a membership site using nanacast. I hope all goes well in that I never hear anyone talking about it. I am just loving the ability to do one click upsells as well as having a fully integrated membership site.

I will let you know how it goes...

    Hi Dawn,

AMember has a free trial. I had a look at it sometime ago
and from what I can remember it was a simple process to
install it myself. Gets my recommendation.

    Hi James,

I was looking into starting a membership a while
back. Checked out quite a few options. Even went
as far as becoming a beta tester for the MSS WSO
(don't know if you remember that), didn't work
out so I plugged for AMember.

Later I got a little sidetracked and the membership
never happened. Happens to us all right?

But what I did take from the experience was knowing
which product I'd be using when I finally get round
    to create one.

So unless they've messed up majorly with the coding
over the last 18 months or so, it's a pretty safe bet
    in my opinion.

        Hi everyone,

I've looked at the suggestions that you have all made, and I'm confused

What I am hoping to do, is publish the e-Books that I've written in a PDF format, but ideally on a section of my site that I could classify as a members section or such like, in order to obtain the names, etc to build a list.

At the moment, they will be free downloads until such times that I feel confident that there is sufficient interest in what I am publishing and can therefore start charging for items.

Is there a simple way to do this? I'm really sorry that I'm asking such a silly question but I keep going over it and just can't quite work out what would be best for me to use, or if there is another way to obtain the information?

Sorry for being a little bit silly but this has had me running around in circles all day and I think I'm going mad trying to make sense of it all..

        Thanks again

        Dawn

    Dawn,
With the option I sent you in PM, yes... Just create the site in admin and select "free" it will allow members to register for free and get access to the members area which will have the downloads and you will have your mail list at the same time...

If you are using wordpress, you can do a password protected page and then have them sign up and give them the password after their confirmation email. Maybe not the most proper way to do it, but very simple.

I wrote an article about membership site plugins for wordpress a couple of months ago.

Personally I will probably never build a website again that isn't based on wordpress.

There is also a comment from someone who uses a competing product that I have not tried.

      Morning all,

The site that the content is going to be on has not been designed using wordpress. But in theory, I could create a members area via wordpress and link it in.

The hosting site I've got has got wordpress attached to it so it could be possible?!

      Dawn

P.S. James, Thanks for the reply, I'll have another look. and Nat, yes I did see the huge link at the top of the page and have clicked on it several times, but as I said earlier on, its all very confusing to me.

Wishlist is pretty neat but if you use paypal as your only payment processor and you intend to have your own affiliate programme, you will run into some problems.

If you are going to use 1 shopping cart with it, it's easy to intergrate. They are working on this issue and easy intergration with Idev will be very soon.

            Hi guys,

This is still causing my head to hurt... and I'm now in the "is this worth it" frame of mind, as it's taking me a lot of time and effort researching things and writing them up into the end product.

I've sat down and thought about what I would like to get out of my site and in turn a membership script:

            1. Build a list of those who are interested in this type of publications
            2. Protect the downloads (if feasible) or at least know who is downloading them
            3. I'm not wanting to charge for the membership, but in the future I'd like to charge for some of the publications if it takes off
            4. It needs to be really simple for me to use it on the mac
            5. I'm not wanting to do OTO offers

At the moment I can't decide whether to go down the membership route, or a pop up when someone goes to leave the site asking if they want to subscribe, or just do a buy now button.

I'm hoping this makes sense, and any advice gratefully received.

    Hi Dawn,

I am a great believer in the K.I.S.S. principle - keep it simple.

Get a copy of Delavo - won't cost you anything and you have mentioned membership protection and possibly selling publications - it will do both.

It is point and click easy to install and has no problems.

I am a Delavo Ambassador (UK) - so I can get you a copy for free - let me know.

    Delavo is good.

Rapid Action Profits (RAP) is another good one.

If you have a copy of Butterfly Marketing, that one also works well.

Recently, someone put out a free single copy of MemberFire that doesn't seem too bad.

But, it depends upon what you want to create with your membership site.

You can create a locked membership directory and password protect it just using your C-Panel.

But, if you're looking for more features, you can try one of the ones above.

Or, you can PM me, and I'll be glad to show you access to a site that offers upgraded Delavo as one of its many benefits.

    Make it a great day!

      Hi everyone,

There is good news and bad news. With thanks to Brian for being understanding, I chose Delavo and everything was going great until I found out that my hosting company won't budge on security and refused to make an exception to stop the 500 internal server error.

So I'm going to ask them what they do support and see what they come up with!

Thanks everyone for your help and comments. I'm just really annoyed that my host won't budge.....
