Good Mircrophone For My Videos

I am looking for a good microphone to create screen cast videos but not sure what one to get.

There are many out there but I want it to sound clear and not have background noise.

anyone have a good recommendation? I was at Best Buy and those bozo's there didn't know shit.

Here are four you can look at:

    1, Blue Microphones Snowball Microphone

Omni directional. Picks up sound in all directions. Cheap, good. A lot of people like this microphone.

    2. Blue Yeti USB Microphone - Some podcasters use this.Omni directional.

    3. Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone. Omni directional.

    4. Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR. Directional.

A directional microphone like the ATR2100 is used by a lot of podcasters. It will cut down background noise because it only picks up what is directly in front of it. So, noise from fans, air conditioners will be quieter as long as the sound is coming from behind the microphone not directly in front of it.

Omni Directional vs. Cardioid - Microphone Pickup Patterns Explanation Video. This video talks about video microphones, but the explanation works for all microphones.

Second on the Blue Yeti, it's what I've used for a couple years and I love it.

A Headset could also work, in particular the Plantronics 355. Very affordable.

Another vote on the Blue Yeti.

As for background noise you also want to be cleaning up the audio when you are editing.

It pays to record a period of background noise before you start presenting so you have something to use as a sample to filter it out afterwards.

I have a Blue Yeti and a few others, but honestly since I can't control my hands when I talk and like to stand and sit I find that for me a headset does a good job with external noise cancelling for most applications. I put my Sennheiser PC8 to use for most things. I hear the Sennheiser PC 151 is a bit better and a little more comfortable. These are less then $55 and can get most people started. It really all depends on your application though as to the quality you want to reach for.

I defiantly can not sit still when I talk so a head seat would be my best bet.

When I am doing my screencast I will have to sit but it will be nice to talk directly into something. When I do webinars you can bet I will be up walking around the office.

The quality does not have to be like I am recording the worlds next #1 song, this is simply for how to videos on how to use my software and for weekly webinars...

I would put in a vote for the Blue Yeti USB. I have it, I use it, I love it. It's not cheap, but it is quite good.

Alternatively, Logitech has a bunch of USB headsets that might do the trick. They tend to use a filter and tend to equalize for voice so they don't always sound as full as a regular microphone, but for ease of use and ability to walk and talk, the headsets are also a way to go.

It very much depends on what you want from your audio.

If you want to have mobility without being tied to a computer, then something like Zoom H1-H5 recorder + clip styled lapel microphone might be a better choice.

If you, however, expect to shoot all your videos in front of the computer, then Blue Yeti or any other decent microphone might be a good choice.
