I'd say likely a VPS from a company like beyond hosting, liquid web, etc

I would go with VPS such as DigitalOcean, Linode or Vultr. Full control, great support and super easy to scale.

I don't think you will need a VPS unless you are running some weird scripts.
I've been looking at alternatives to anything EIG these couple of days.

From reading many reviews, here's what I've come up with for dependable shared hosting.
    Crocweb, mddhosting, serverhub, stablehost, hawkhost.

Already have an account with stablehost. So far so good.

I've only ever used HostGator, and have had both shared and reseller hosting accounts. In addition, I've had both low and high traffic websites on my HostGator sites, and have never had any issue with any of them, except occasionally having to increase my bandwidth allowance on a site (if I've underestimated it when I initially set up the site). With HostGator, increasing this is easy to do. So, with its ease of use and reasonable price, I would definitely recommend HostGator. The reseller account is just as easy to use as the shared account, by the way, and a good choice if you're going to build a lot of websites, or if you are going to build websites to sell to other people.

There have been soooo many threads asking questions about hosting, so I would suggest using the forum search function.

Secondly, with every hosting thread you will find the Hostgator backers who have conveniently missed or ignored the tremendous amount of issues that HG has had since being acquired by EIG. Please do your proper research, webhostingtalk.com is a great resource, and stay away from any EIG owned hosting provider.

WPEngine is good for wordpress, but they are more expensive. You can also try asphosportal, the price more competitive. Other solution is hostforlife.eu. They all support wordpress

You can initially try any web hosting company and if you face any issue because of higher traffic than upgrade the hosting plan to Cloud/VPS, currently no need to purchase VPS.

Actually neither would be considered "top level".

Personally, I have good experience with SiteGround and DotEasy. You may want to start with shared hosting and monitor it for a few days, if all good, you can maintain it. If it couldn't cope, just go for VPS.

It is always a much better idea to research providers that currently over-meet your needs because that will allow you to "grow into them". If you don't want to pay for the extra services up front, then make sure that you target all of your research on hosting providers that will allow you to upgrade your package without actually have to change your DNS settings or move your website.
