Who is better than Godaddy? I'm FURIOUS!

hey Warriors.
what a nice surprise. this morning I got an email from GoDaddy that says there was a problem with my credit card. I assumed I must have forgotten to renew the expiry date, but when I checked I saw that I had done that two months ago.

Tried to call them but kept getting '10 minute wait' warnings.

Then I discovered that the 5 accounts that were to renew yesterday are all SUSPENDED! What, no warning there is a problem???

I'm furious. And still can't get through to them. Now I'm wondering if I should just take this opportunity to move the domains rather than pay Godaddy anymore money.

What do you guys think? Who has good deals on domain registrar services these days? Used to be Godaddy was the cheapest, and that is why I went with them. But this has me fuming!

I have been with namecheap for 5 long years. Extremely satisfy with them. The interface is 100% way better than Godaddy. Godaddy cp panel is slow and sluggish and not user friendly. Namecheap got almost every tools for you to manage your domain that you dont even need any support from them to manage your domain!

I have always used Dotster. They are a bit more expensive but I've used them since 1998. The also have a reseller program so you buy/renew domains for $12. They have always been nice to me and I no complaints.

I wish you the best of luck--

You won't wait for just 10 minutes to talk to someone?
I did that 3 times the other day (yes, with GD).

Get a headset. Listen and work on your computer. If it's important to your business, it's worth a 10 minute wait. Especially when you can be doing OTHER things while waiting.

Sorry -- got the finger violins here for ya....

thanks everyone for your responses. I will take a look at these other registrars and of course keep trying to find out what is happening.

      Just to clarify:

Originally Posted by zapseo View Post

I waited 10 minutes, and then 10 more minutes and then 10 more minutes after that...watching my Skype account slowly drain. What I'm saying is I didn't hang up after they said I would have to wait ten minutes. The queue never got any shorter. Finally after about a half hour I had to leave for an appointment. Meanwhile I was emailing them and yes, working on other things.

A lot of Credit Card problems are beyond their control.
This is a godaddy problem. There is nothing wrong with the card.

I use and recommend GoDaddy. I get notices far in advance of any expiration by email.
      My domains are on autorenew.

What I'm pissed about is simply this: I got an email this morning that said there was a problem with my card. My sites were already suspended. I wasn't even given an opportunity to rectify the problem.

That would be like your landlord telling you that your rent cheque bounced and when you get to your store it is padlocked shut.

On top of that, it is their mistake. So I'm losing business all day today. pathetic.

Anyway, thanks for the responses, I'll take a look at some of these other providers.

I love Dynadot! You have a "grace period" of 100 hours or so where you can return a domain name for a credit, say, if you realize a bit too late that your awesome niche phrase is really crap.

But don't ask me how I know that. LOL

The "daddy" has always been problematic in ways that most people won't notice, until you get an email telling you that due to a spam complaint, your domain (and entire account) has been confiscated. (see NoDaddy.Com - Exposing the Many Reasons Not to Trust GoDaddy with Your Domain Names)

    I highly recommend Moniker.com and NameCheap.com.

I've never had a problem with Godaddy. I would certainly wait 10 minutes to straighten it out. Every time I've ever called, they've fixed the problem and refunded me when I needed a refund. Only product they have that I wouldn't touch is their hosting. Worse hosting in the world. I use Namecheap also, but I can usually get my domains cheaper with Godaddy.

        Alexa,

I want to do what I think you're doing (ie) I want to buy the domain from Go Daddy and host it on Bluehost my ISP.

On a 1 to 10 - how dangerous or risky is this approach? I hate to spend $10 w/ Bluehost when I get it for much less at GDaddy - but if there's a registrar issue, why bother.

        Danke darlin,

Today on this post I have been a very bad girl because I didn't read every single post before getting fired up to respond. My bad.

Short and bittersweet. GoDaddy sucks a big one.

I am a loyal fan to NameCheap.com. Had a couple of stragglers still registered with GoDaddy and finally got off my procrastinating arse and transferred them to NameCheap. WhooHoo!

Here it is in a nutshell. Doesn't matter who is hosting your website. If your domain(s) is registered with GD and you get 1 (one, uno, une, whatever) spam complaint, valid or not, GD can and will shut you down. No questions asked. You are guilty until you prove otherwise, which may take weeks to months.

BTW, they will not only shut the one (1) site in question down, they will shut down ALL of your registered sites and hold you ransom to get them reopened.

GD is NOT Internet marketer friendly.

Do a search - You will find many horror stories. Wait ... I just did one for you

  • You can blame them but it won't fix anything.

I use and recommend GoDaddy. I get notices far in advance of any expiration by email. Then they do a lot of follow up when you decide to cancel or let a domain expire.

My biggest gripe with GoDaddy is all the annoying presells when you try to purchase something.

I've never had an issue with their tech support and they have always resolved my problems quickly.

You can move your sites but you'll be down a few extra days. You need to wait out the time on the phone and in the meantime send them emails.

I'll bet by tomorrow the issue is completely resolved.

If not the come back with followup to your problems. I'd like to know why they didn't "fix" your issue if they didn't.

A lot of Credit Card problems are beyond their control. Usually the bank or merchant processor. They are a business that uses software to track these things. If you were running a business and got a declined card you would do the same thing.

    1. s**t happens. Without talking to GD and giving them a chance to rectify their mistake, or hear their side of the story, I think you're going off half-cocked. Yes, I wouldn't be unhappy. But in the 20+ years I've been online, having a site down for a few days is HARDLY the worst thing I've experienced. In fact, a whole ton of my domains were down a few weeks ago -- and my hosting company didn't even notify me! I had to sit on top of them, instead.
If your business model is so fragile that a few days' hosting is going to take it down in flames, you should consider other businesses or other plans of how you run your business. Problems are simply a part of doing business. They happen. Yes, you can lose money. Oh well.
    2. if your money was draining on skype, I suggest getting a monthly skype out plan. I don't know about Canada -- but I have unlimited calling out in the US and Canada (and I don't know where else) for a whopping $2.95.
    3. If it took GD 3 days to re-direct your DNS, without knowing the details, I'd guess there are some ICANN issues involved. If you've recently re-registered a domain with a different registrar, there are some restrictions that have nothing to do with the registrar specifically.
    4. I've nearly alway found GD technical support to be polite (undeservedly so, when I've been upset -- I was very impressed with their professional attitude), easily understaood, and more than willing to spend as much time as I needed to get a problem resolved. I've never felt talked down to, I've never had trouble understanding them (maybe it's the fact that they are mostly in Arizona?). I may have spent over 10 minutes waiting (I love knowing how long, on skype,, lol) -- but they equally spent extensive times with me.
    5. My biggest gripe with GD I actually described in another post from last month, after that day where I called them up 3 times: it's virtually impossible to figure out, easily, all the things they are charging you for.
    6. And yes, I wouldn't use their hosting. In fact, I told them during one of the aforementioned conversations that their hosting has a pretty unhappy rep (that I tend to agree with, which also comes from a script installer's and a script owner's opinion.)

    Everyone loves to complain.

And, people do need the opportunity to vent.

But give people the opportunity to make it right. The number of things that can go wrong boggle the mind. In fact, it can be kind of amusing.

        Well I prefer Dynadot.

Their interface is simple - loads fast - has everything you'll ever need to redirect/forward domains.

Yes, has the Grace period of 100 hours - so if you don't like it or bought a misspelled domain (of course I never make typos at 1am ) you aint in the pooh and can drop it.

AND if you are a bit of a domain buyer like I am, you get really good rates after $500 of purchases. But their prices before that occurs are more Godaddy type prices.

So the others that have been mentioned might be more suited if it's price you are concerned about and only have a few domains.

Yes, I use those "others" as well

        Cheers

Depends on what you are asking(sorry to be lazy i never read the posts but seen your title page)

in general i use Blue-host for hosting and i purchased a premium members pack for the whole year, unlike hostgator were its 10 bucks a month,Blue host offer dedicated i.p servers also for 2 dollars meaning if the site you intend to use is a static site then you have a dedicated i.p server, i think hostgator charge a bit more for that.

if you ment domain names then namecheap are better then go daddy and you can just leave money form paypal with them if you wish for hosting but i would strongly suggest blue host as my site has no problems with them at all

My domains are all moved, thanks all for the info on other registrars. I have taken all my domains off of autorenew and will be moving them as they near expiry.

It's actually turned out to be a good thing because I have not bothered to look at the competition for years, and didn't realise I could be saving quite a bit of money. Also, I am grateful that this problem occurred with my own sites, and not one of my clients sites. Now I am prepared before it can happen.

To clarify for those who still don't get it: There is nothing wrong with my credit card. All of my domains were set to autorenew. For five or more years, that is what happened. However, this time they had a problem with the charge not going through.

The same day they sent me an email to tell me there was a problem, they suspended the domains. That means, no revenue, no emails, no contact, nada.

Like I said, luckily it was not one of my client's domains, all of whom are small businesses that rely on their websites for their business.

Anyway, problem solved. I am now with a new registrar at half the price. They have assured me that I would be contacted before any drastic action such as suspending a domain would be taken. And yes, I used my credit card.

thanks again for the info Warriors.

sorry I didn't respond...forgot about this post after the bull...

I went with 1and1. Moved all the domains that were affected by the problem, and took the rest off of autorenew on Godaddy so that when they are expiring I can move them too.

It all went very smoothly and I'm happy with this new registrar. Hopefully there won't be any problems down the road.

Turns out there WAS a problem with my credit card. 1and1 couldn't charge through either. I had to call the bank and the problem was resolved. The issue was that Godaddy suspended all my domains (meaning no one could access them and traffic dropped to zero) the minute they weren't able to do the autorenew. I didn't get a warning, or a chance to rectify the situation.

I don't understand the people who are apologists for godaddy behaving like that. It would be like, imagine you just tried to pay for a meal in a restaurant with a credit card, and there was a problem with your card.

At the same moment the waiter comes over to say "sir there is a problem with your card" two police officers arrest you and drag you out of the restaurant.

Dramatic yeah, but that is the equivalent.

I don't usually get pissed about things like this, but I did this time.

Anyway, I've moved to 1and1 and I'll probably look at Namecheap as well. bye bye godaddy.

        Best web hosting companies
First of all godaddy is a rip compared to other hosting companies. From my experience, webhostingpad and hostgator are 2 of the best web hosting companies around. They have plenty of features like unlimited space, domains and databases. They also give you credit towards google adwords and yahoo advertising and if you're an affiliate marketer you know how valuable google credits are. If you are looking for the best web hosting companies start with webhostingpad or hostgator you won't be disappointed. Webhostingpad has a plan that starts at $1.99. Choosing the best web hosting companies isn't hard if you do your research.

I switched to Namecheap after the recommendations on here.

What I hate the most about Godaddy is their shady practiceses on trying to get an upsell by doing everything in their power to make you click the 'wrong' button or automatically adding stuff that you need to remove. Their site is slow as hell as well and the checkout process is horrible.

Namecheap has free privacy and easy nameserver update. Much better imo.

    • While I have not has any problems with GoDaddy up until last Wednesday. I had / have a couple sites hosted with them but due to their ridiculous prices for adding e-mail accounts I decided to move my sites to NetworkRedux (who in past 4 days have provided me with awesome customer support).

To get my one site downloaded off GoDaddy via FTP has taken me from the morning of Wednesday Nov. 11 till late last night. 3 fricking days to download 70 MB. They completely throttled my FTP account. Plus when I went to enter my new dns information I had nothing but trouble.

I am not happy with them at all! After reading this thread I am convinced I should move my domains as well.

I use namecheap now and for the last two years. No problems so far. I still have one domain with goddaddy because they have made it such a PITA to transfer for me but I will eventually.

    • Well after reading this thread earlier today I have started the process to transfer my domains to namecheap. Hopefully it will not be too much of a battle with GoDaddy.
In any case I will follow through with the domain name transfer as after doing a google search I found numerous reports of godaddy suspending all of a persons domains under their account for a wrongful report of spam.

If you are planning long term then rackspace is the way to go.

Yes, it will cost more, but having a personal assistants to call and take care of issues fast is a must!

    Good Luck,

Virtually anyone is better than GoDaddy. I make it a point to tell people to stay away from them. That's how bad they are.

Unfortunately, none of this makes any difference whatsoever when you're wrongly accused of spam by a third party and have your domain/site frozen until you prove you're innocent (http://NoDaddy.com).

Godaddy's interface is like a bad cartoon crossed with a bad acid trip. And I've read so many horror stories about domains getting suspended for either very bizarre reasons or no reason at all (don't know if the stories are true.)

Anyway, Namecheap.com is who I use and they've been good to me so far.
